  • DUQUESNE and the NBA Duquesne University Has Had a Total of 33 Players Drafted, with 20 Dukes Having Seen Action in an NBA Game
DUQUESNE AND THE NBA Duquesne University has had a total of 33 players drafted, with 20 Dukes having seen action in an NBA game. Chuck Cooper became the first Duquesne player – and first Black player – drafted in the history of the National Basketball Association when he was chosen in the second round of the 1950 draft. Legend has it that when Celtics owner Walter Brown matter-of-factly announced, “Boston takes Charles Cooper of Duquesne,” a fellow owner responded, “Walter, don’t you know he’s a colored boy?” “I don’t give a damn if he’s striped or plaid or polka-dot,” Brown said. “Boston takes Charles Cooper of Duquesne!” The first DU players to see action in the NBA were Moe Becker, Ed Melvin and Walt Miller who all debuted in 1946 with the Pittsburgh Ironmen (Becker also played for the Boston Celtics and Detroit Falcons that season). Duquesne has had three first round picks in Dick Ricketts (1955), Si Green (1956) and Norm Nixon (1977). Ricketts and Green were both the first players selected in the draft, making Duquesne the only school in NCAA history to have the back-to-back first picks in the NBA Draft. Few remember that Green was selected ahead of San Francisco’s Bill Russell in ‘56. DU is currently represented in the NBA by guard Mike James. James, who played for the Dukes from 1995-98, originally signed as a free agent with the Miami Heat in 2001. He was then waived by Miami and signed with Boston in July of 2003 where he received his first regular playing time.

  • 2019 Banquet Program
Welcome to We at the Georgetown Centre, are very happy to be the site of the 2019 Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall Fame banquet. Being a 1963 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, I have had many memo- ries of valley sports in my high school and college memories. We, at the Georgetown Centre, family owned and operated since 1990, have become the premier banquet facility in this area. We operated the Yorkshire Inn Restaurant for 23 years beginning in 1970. Through the years we have established many lasting relationships whether it be by wedding, sports banquets, showers or graduations. The valley has been an important source of business for the Yorkshire Inn and the Georgetown Centre for many years. We hope that this inaugural banquet of the Mid Mon Valley sports affair becomes a new reoccurring relationship with the Georgetown Centre. We are proud to have the yearly affair here with us. Thank you for sharing the experience with us at the Georgetown Centre. Thank you, Leslie George, Jr. Owner Hall of Fame Watch 2019 Welcome to the 26th annual Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Banquet. This is our first experience at The Georgetown Centre and we appreciate the graciousness of host Les George. Our student honorees, outstanding senior scholar-athletes chosen by their respective Mon Valley high schools, are to be commended on a job well done! It is our privilege to honor you in tonight’s ceremony alongside the athletes who came before you. Most importantly, you represent the future for our communities, commonwealth and nation.

  • 2018 Banquet Program
Hall of Fame Watch 2018 Welcome to the 25th annual Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Banquet. This is our silver anniversary banquet and we have a class of par excellence. We recognize the time, energy and dedication that you have demonstrated while participating in high school athletics and maintaining your academic excellence. In the past decade, upon the recommendation of one of the original contributors to the Mon Valley Sportswriters Hall of Fame, Ron Paglia recommended recognizing WPIAL champions for our area high schools. Since it was so rare to have a Mon Valley High WPIAL winner, it appeared justified. Recently, we have entered a golden age of WPIAL champions. This year we have the privilege to recognize two teams and 11 individual champions. Belle Vernon Area High School Leopards won their fourth overall Class 4A softball (21-3) WPIAL championship (2007, 2015 and 2017). BVA has won three out of the last four years of WPIAL softball championships. Captain Bailey Parshall will accept the award for the team gold. Brownsville High School Falcons won their first ever Class 3A baseball (15-2) WPIAL championship. Our Achievement award winners for Mon Valley High School WPIAL 2017-2018 individual Gold include in wrestling Bentworth/Charleroi’s John Vargo (34-8) Class AA182 lbs.

The clinic registration fee had remained the same for over 25 years. This decision was not taken lightly. First, the additional money is being invested into the ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT: Saundi Fugleberg clinic to elevate the experience for members. Secondly, the cost of providing high caliber [email protected] clinicians along with the constantly rising travel and lodging expenses made this decision necessary.
