VILLANOVA NOTEBOOK CAREER ACCOLADES (cont’d.) STOPPING THE RUN NATHAN FONDACARO (Senior, K/P) n A stingy Villanova defense did an excellent job of stifling Lehigh’s running game in the 2019 n season opener last week. The Mountain Hawks finished the game with a negative total CAA First Team of minus-12 yards on 20 carries, including 47 yards gained and 59 yards lost (36 yards lost on quarterback sacks). It marked the first time since September 16, 2017 against COLIN GAMROTH (Senior, OL) Lafayette that the Wildcats held an opponent to negative rushing yards. Villanova was 2020 n one of three FCS teams (James Madison and Stetson were the others) to hold their Week CAA Second Team Offense 1 opponent to less than zero rushing yards. 2019 n LIMITING YARDAGE CAA Third Team Offense n For the fifth time in the Mark Ferrante head coaching era the Villanova defense held its opponent to fewer than 200 yards of total offense when Lehigh had just 139 yards last RAYJOUN PRINGLE (Junior, WR) 2020 week’s season opener. The Mountain Hawks had 151 passing yards on 32 attempts and n minus-12 rushing yards on 20 carries in the contest. FORREST RHYNE (Graduate, LB) THREE POINTS ALLOWED 2019 n n Last week’s 47-3 win over Lehigh marked the fewest points the Wildcats have allowed CAA First Team Defense n in their season opener since 1997 when Villanova opened the season with a 64-0 win over CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week (10.7) West Chester. From 2005 to 2017, the Wildcats allowed at least 20 points to the opposition in their season opener in 13 straight years. Since then however, Villanova has given up 2020 n less than 20 points in its first game played in each of the last four seasons. PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS n Villanova had four players named to the CAA Football Preseason All-Conference Team during the league’s virtual Media Day event. The honorees from the Wildcats are junior offensive lineman Michael Corbi (Arnold, Md.), senior defensive lineman Malik Fisher (Bronx, N.Y.), senior linebacker Forrest Rhyne (Waynesboro, Pa.) and junior cornerback Christian Benford (Randallstown, Md.). Each of the four preseason all-conference selections were previously first team All- CAA picks for the abbreviated 2020 season which was contested this past spring. In addition to those four players, senior quarterback Daniel Smith (Leesburg, Va.) and graduate student running back Justin Covington (Bronx, N.Y.) earned preseason honorable mention recognition from the league.

AWOPETU THE PLAYMAKER n Graduate student safety Nowoola Awopetu holds a special distinc- tion in Villanova history as one of just two Wildcats in the FCS era (since 1985) to have career touchdowns on both defense and special teams. Awopetu has scored three career touchdowns, including two pick-sixes in a single game against Richmond in 2018 to go along with a 100-yard kick return touchdown against Richmond in 2019. The other player in the Villanova record book with career defense and special teams scores is Ademole Turner who returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and had a kickoff return touchdown during the 1996 season. n Nowoola Awopetu is the only player in Villanova history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game. He accom- plished that feat on November 3, 2018 at Richmond. When he faced the Spiders one year later, Awopetu returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score to record the Wildcats first kick return touchdown since the 2010 season. His 100-yard return is one of seven plays in school his- tory of 100 yards or longer, with five of the seven plays being kickoff returns.

150 MILESTONE n Villanova is one of four current CAA Football teams to win at least 150 reg- ular season conference games. The Wildcats reached that milestone on Oc- tober 5, 2019 with a 35-28 win over William & Mary and currently have an all-time record of 154-108 (.588) in regular season conference games. Vil- lanova first joined the Yankee Conference for the 1988 season and the league has since transitioned to the Atlantic 10 and now CAA Football. The other current league members with at least 150 conference wins are New Hamp- shire (247), Maine (213) and Delaware (168). The Wildcats .588 all-time winning percentage in conference play is the fourth-highest among current CAA Football schools.
