At the same time Don Gaspar de Portola, leader of Mexico’s military expedition, claimed Alta California (the present State of California), for Spain. The mission, ultimately a part of a chain of twenty-one historic California Spanish missions stretching from San Diego to Sonoma, assumed primary importance. Spain decreed Monterey as the capital of California and established a presidio, or military outpost, for protection against encroachment from other national powers. San Carlos Borromeo Mission, like the other missions, was a religious center established for the conversion and education of Native Americans. Friction between the mission and the presidio, generated by Serra’s dispute over military treatment of the indigenous people, resulted in Father Serra’s relocation of the mission to a site near Carmel Bay on August 24, 1771. There the Mission of San Carlos de Carmelo became the headquarters for the rest of his California missionary work. Pope John Paul II beatified Father Serra in 1988. He was canonized a Saint on September 23, 2015, at Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Francis. He is buried in the floor of the sanctuary of Carmel Mission Basilica. The Holy See erected the Diocese of Both Californias on April 27, 1840, and named Francisco Garcia Diego y Moreno as bishop. In 1849 the Diocese of Both Californias was renamed the Diocese of Monterey and Joseph Alemany was named bishop. Later Baja California was separated from Monterey and the original Diocese of Monterey was divided with a new province established in San Francisco. More changes followed as California grew. The Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles was divided with the creation of the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno in 1924. Finally the current Diocese of Monterey was created in 1967 and encompasses four Central Coast counties of Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and San Luis Obispo. Bishop Daniel Garcia, the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Monterey, leads the people Mission San Carlos Borromeo circa 1870.     Statement on Pope Francis’ Appointment of Three New Auxiliary Bishops to Serve the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Most Reverend José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels July 21, 2015 Good morning and welcome! ¡Buenos días y bienvenidos! I want to welcome all of you to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. We are joined today by my brother bishops — auxiliary bishops Jerry Wilkerson, Thomas Curry, Oscar Solis and Alexander Salazar. We are also joined today by our retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, who is our Archbishop Emeritus. This morning in Rome, Pope Francis announced that he has accepted the retirement of Bishop Jerry Wilkerson, because last year he reached the retirement age for bishops, which is 75 years old. At the same time, the Holy Father announced the appointment of three new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Bishop Wilkerson has been serving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a priest for 50 years, and as a bishop since 1998. He has fulfilled his ministry with zeal and dedication, and we are very grateful for the many things he has done for the people of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are also grateful because we know that even in his retirement, his health and energy will allow him to continue his ministry among us. I’m personally very grateful for his ministry, for his friendship, advice and fraternal support since I came to the Archdiocese. Thank you, Bishop Wilkerson! This edition of the Palma Student & Parent Handbook has been revised and is available to you online at our school’s website. It contains information that will be of interest to the student and his parents in realizing the most of one’s time and efforts on the Palma campus throughout the school year. This revised handbook presents to you Palma’s expectations of each student and parent throughout this school year, from Orientation Day in August through Graduation Day on Memorial Day weekend. Quality education in a positive and safe learning environment is an important concern to parents and educators in every school, especially here at Palma. We accept the challenge of educating young men and will do whatever we can to continue the excellent reputation and environment Palma has enjoyed these past 68 years. Quality education today requires that cooperative and honest efforts between the school and family and the student and his teachers flow smoothly on a regular basis. Palma’s administration, faculty and staff are partners with parents in their son’s education; we notify parents of concerns about student life or behavior, even when off campus.
