Die doel van hierdie studie was om die oorsprong, stigting en gebeure van die Matie-krieketklub na te vors en te dokumenteer. Die kern van hierdie studie gaan oor die ontwikkeling van die Matie-krieketklub. Die klub se geskiedenis strek vanaf 1865, moontlik einde 1864, tot op hede en alle inligting wat bekom is, is so deeglik en akkuraat moontlik weergegee. Die doel was dus om die oorspronklike gebeure te rekonstrueer. Hoewel daar baie oor sport geskryf is, is die meeste inligting nie wetenskaplik bewaar of gedokumenteer nie. Aangesien hierdie studie sport-histories van aard is, is die histories-wetenskaplike metode van navorsing soos toegepas in Menslike Bewegingskunde gevolg. Dit behels die versameling van inligting uit veral primêre bronne. Onder hierdie bronne tel die notules van die Matie- krieketklub, voorsitters- en bestuursverslae, jaarverslae, Universiteitspublikasies, onderhoude met ooggetuies en foto's. I can remember coming across what he had recorded and that I had shown particular interest in his very early recollections and of course his great cricket stories. While he had recorded a great deal of information he never quite got to finish the story. After Dad’s passing I thought that it would be great to complete his story and to make it available to those who would like to know more about him, and also to family and friends who shared in his journey along the way. I have added more from Christmas letters he had written plus my own memories from over the last fifteen to twenty years. Fortunately, Ian was very meticulous in keeping records and information. Ian McGregor Stuart was known to many of his friends simply as “Stuey”.

    The Search for ‘Missing’ Stats: Dropped Catches in Test Cricket By Charles Davis For all its bewildering array of data, cricket statistics still has a few blind spots. One of the most obvious is in the area of dropped catches and other missed chances. There have been few if any extensive studies in this area. Gerald Brodribb in Next Man In mentioned that statistician R.H. Campbell estimated that 30% of catches were missed in Tests in the 1920s, and I have seen a figure of more than 30 dropped catches by the West Indies in Australia in 1968/69, a team plagued by poor fielding. But really basic questions like “Overall, what percentage of chances are dropped?” have lacked answers. For a number of years I have been collecting all the missed chances I can find in ESPNCricinfo’s ball-by-ball texts for Test matches. Because ESPNCricinfo does not always use standard terms to describe missed chances, and different commentators have their own ways of expressing themselves, the texts are searched for 40 or more words and phrases that might indicate a miss, from “drop” and “dolly” to “shell”, “grass”, and ”hash”. The process generally flags about 100-200 lines in each Test, which I then search manually to identify real chances. For some Tests, I also confirm data by checking match reports and other ball-by-ball sources. While the texts go back to 1999, the textual detail can be patchy in the early years. I have logged missed chances from late 2000 onwards, but I would consider that data to be substantially complete only from 2003.

It is exceedingly rare for a fine batsman to be remembered primarily for his skill at throwing down the wicket, but such was the lasting impression made by a tall and vulpine figure in the covers. The St Lawrence at Canterbury, then the most traditional of cricket grounds, was an appropriate setting for one of the finest fielders in the game’s history to demonstrate how to hit the stumps. The match involving the touring South Africans had been delayed while the pitch dried out, and to quell a restless crowd, Colin Cowdrey, the Kent captain, asked Bland to put on a show. He gave Bland six balls and challenged him to throw from 25 yards.“Surprisingly, no one had ever made such a request before and he was rather embarrassed by it,” Cowdrey recalled. “We set up three stumps and Bland never stopped moving. He swooped on the balls rolled to him and in one flowing movement threw them on the run.
