Recensie: Jack White****1/2 Recensie: Jack White****1/2 Lotto Arena Merksem donderdag 6 september 2012 foto © Jack White Recensie: Had u ook die superlatieven gelezen over Jack White's optreden op de voorbije editie van Werchter?. Of nog beter, was u daarbij? Misschien was u dan één van de zovelen die dat moment (nog) eens wou meemaken in de mini-bunker van 'A'. De Lotto Arena was uitverkocht, getuige de verhoogde druk per m² staanplaats en de immer groeiende afstand tot de bar. Antwerpen was klaar voor de halfgod genaamd Jack White, dat was duidelijk. De hamvraag die overbleef was of hij met de mannen of met de vrouwen zou komen. Jack White laat zich tijdens de tournee namelijk omringen door een band die volledig bestaat uit ofwel vrouwen (‘The Peacocks‘) ofwel mannen (‘The Buzzards‘) en kiest de avond zelf pas wie hem mag begeleiden. De mannen wonnen deze avond het pleit, wat de vrouwen ondertussen gingen doen blijft ons een raadsel. White zelf leek eerder op een personage uit een Tim Burton-film: zwart gekleed, bleke huid en een kapsel dat best omschreven kan worden als Robert Smith-light. Wie een standaard-setlist had verwacht, kwam bedrogen uit. Elke avond iets anders, net zoals uw avondeten. En ook dat kan soms zwaar op de maag liggen. Zo werd het publiek direct bij de keel genomen door een wall of sound-versie van ‘The Hardest Button to Button'. Die betonnen omgeving in combinatie met veel decibels blijft een hekele bedoening. Met ‘Sixteen Saltines' sneed hij direct zijn solo-luik aan. Bij ‘Missing Pieces' werd zijn logo, – hoe raadt u het? – 3 witte strepen, op de achtergrond ontplooid. ‘Hey, let's bore you with another one. Deze eenzame one-liner gaf de aanzet tot ‘Hotel Yorba' dat als verademing een luchtige country-inslag kreeg. Dat White niet alleen kan tokkelen, bewees hij bij ‘Trash Tongue Talker' toen hij zelf achter de buffetpiano plaats nam. Met ‘Apple Blossom' toonde hij zich schatplichtig aan, tja, The Beatles, wiens intro van ‘I Feel Fine' hij gebruikte bij de inzet van ‘The Same Boy You've Always Known'. Het tempo van en tussen de songs bleef strak. De zaal vond dit goed: het was lang geleden dat we nog jongeren zagen die in groep zingend op-en-neer sprongen, een concert beleven als het ware. Wat niet kan worden gezegd van die late dertiger voor ons stond en die de heel avond met zijn iPhone de set zat op te nemen. Hoe dan ook, de wereld en het concert stond niet stil. Als men wou horen hoe Hendrix ooit zijn blues bedreef, dan kwam ‘Ball and Biscuit' toch zeer dicht in de buurt. Gitaarsolo's uit de onderbuik. Deep, down & dirty… Set gedaan, het gejoel en het gefluit kon beginnen. Man's ego liet nog wat op zich wachten maar toen hij het laatste drieluik inzette, kon de avond voor velen niet meer stuk. Met het radio-vriendelijk ‘Steady, As She Goes', het betere solo-werk van ‘Freedom At 21' en de nu al tijdloze stadion-hymne ‘Seven Nation Army' werd de kers op de taart gezet. Conclusie: Het kwaliteitsniveau, zowel van de songs als van het geluid, was niet altijd in orde, maar je blijft gebiologeerd naar White kijken en luisteren. The first edition of “The Record” was published in 1910 and its appearance each October is eagerly awaited by the whole school community. That the cover of the first edition of “The Record” is recognised in the design of this first edition of the Aston E-Zine is entirely appropriate emphasising that while over one hundred years apart, both magazines are produced by the students for the students and share very similar origins. What the students of 1910 would make of the E-Zine is hard to say, however they would, I think, recognise a magazine that is trying to show the school as it really is and not how some would pretend. New technologies will undoubtedly allow the E-Zine to develop in ways that could not have been imagined in 1910, nevertheless I hope that over the coming years the publication fills a distinct niche in the life of the school and that its publication becomes as eagerly awaited as that of “The Record”.     Das große Alan-Bangs-Nachtsession1-Archiv der FoA Alan Bangs hatte beim Bayerischen Rundfunk seit Februar 2000 einen besonderen Sendeplatz, an dem er eine zweistündige Sendung moderieren konnte: „Durch die Initiative von Walter Meier wurde Alan ständiger Gast DJ in den Nachtsession‘s, welche jeweils in der Nacht vom Freitag zum Samstag auf Bayern2 ausgestrahlt werden. Seine 1.Nachtsession war am 18.02.2000 und seit dieser ist er jeweils 3 bis 4mal pro Jahr zu hören – die letzte Sendung wurde am 1.12.2012 ausgestrahlt.
