Edward Mills Climbs The Old Man of Hoy Facts! “The Old Man of Hoy”

The Old Man of Hoy is one of

Orkney's most famous landmarks. The 450ft (140m) sea stack is formed of old red sandstone and stands close to

Rackwick Bay on the west coast of the island of Hoy.

What an amazing, record breaking, achievement by 8 year old Edward Mills, son of Bekki Christian, who served on the Parish Council, and Nathan Mills who lived in Longney until the end of 2017. Edward has become the youngest person to climb The Old Man of Hoy sea stack off the coast of Orkney. Bekki said his climbing career started on the banks of the on Clive’s woodpile!!

It is popular with climbers and Edward set himself the challenge to raise money for the charity “Climbers was first climbed by the UK's Against Cancer” and described the trip to the top of the 140m column of most famous mountaineer rock as "quite scary". Bekki took the ferry to see him during the climb, Sir Chris Bonington in 1966. which then sounded its horn when he reached the peak! He and colleague Tom Patey returned the following year Edward found a box and small book at the end of his climb, he said "There and were part of the famous was a hidden box up on the top and I had a metal card which said 'Mum's three-night live TV broadcast, gift to Climbers Against Cancer', he put it into the box and wrote a story in The Great Climb. the book, he said he climbed this sea stack for my mum and raised money In 2014, Sir Chris marked his for “Climbers Against Cancer”. He hopes other people will read this book 80th birthday by returning to and think of their own ideas about what they might say. It took Edward Orkney to climb the Old Man just under 5 hours to climb to the top securing the title of the youngest of Hoy 48 years after his first person to get to the top! ascent. Edwards JustGiving page called, Edward vs The Old Man of Hoy, has had donations totalling more than £28,000.

The Fruit Exchange The Fruit Exchange connects food outlets with people who have surplus fruit. It brings communities together and ensures fresh, locally grown produce is not wasted

From our experience of running Down to Earth Stroud, we know that there is a lot of surplus fruit, vegetables and nuts in gardens, allotments and in the countryside that goes to waste every year. The Fruit Exchange gets local food outlets such as restaurants, pubs and cafes to use it.

How does it work?

We launched in 2015 and the project has since gone from strength to strength. We raise awareness, recruit businesses and provide a useful resource for people who have fruit they don’t know what to do with!

We provide a list of businesses taking part with a map showing their location on our website.

http://www.downtoearthstroud.co.uk/growing-together/the-fruit-ex- change1/participating-businesses/

So anyone who has fruit going spare can get in contact with their local business to see if they want it. If people need help with harvesting or delivering the fruit, we will try to find a volunteer to help.

We provide the businesses taking part with Fruit Exchange packs containing all the relevant information they need including pre-printed vouchers, posters, flyers and posters for staff.

In our first year over 70 exchanges took place. Quantities ranged from an ice cream container of berries to many many kilos of apples! People with surplus took it into their local food outlet in exchange for either a voucher or something there and then, perhaps a coffee and cake or a lunch or even a few bottles of beer!
