Baron Savile From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For the life peer, see Mark Saville, Baron Saville of Newdigate. For Baron Savile of Pomfret, see Earl of Sussex. Baron Savile, of Rufford in the County of Nottingham, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1888 for the diplomat Sir John Savile. He was the eldest of the five illegitimate children of John Lumley-Savile, 8th Earl of Scarbrough, and the grandson of John Lumley-Savile, 7th Earl of Scarbrough. The latter was the fourth of the seven sons of Richard Lumley-Saunderson, 4th Earl of Scarbrough, and his wife Barbara, sister and heiress of the politician Sir George Savile, 8th and last Baronet, of Thornhill (see Savile Baronets for more information on this title), who bequeathed the substantial Savile estates in Yorkshire andNottinghamshire (including Rufford and Thornhill) to his nephew the Hon. Richard Lumley-Saunderson, later 6th Earl of Scarbrough. On his death the estates passed to his younger brother, the aforementioned seventh Earl, and then to his son the eighth Earl. The latter bequeathed the estates to his second natural son Captain Henry Lumley-Savile (d. 1881). When he died they passed to his younger brother Augustus William Lumley-Savile (1829–1887) and then to his eldest brother, the aforementioned John Savile, who was created Baron Savile the following year. The peerage was created with remainder to Savile's nephew John Lumley, who succeeded him as second Baron. In 1898 the latter assumed by Royal license the surname of Savile in addition to that of Lumley. As of 2013, the title is held by his grandson, the fourth Baron, who succeeded his uncle in 2008. ENCLOSURE & AGRICULTURAL IMPROVEMENT IN NORTH-WEST LINCOLNSHIRE FROM CIRCA 1600 TO 1850. Thomas M. Smith, MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2012 i Abstract This study sets out to establish the link between enclosure and agricultural improvement in a group of parishes in north-west Lindsey, Lincolnshire between the sixteenth century and the mid-nineteenth century. In particular it emphasises the continuity of enclosure history through time, rather than concentrating only on the period of parliamentary enclosure as has often been the case in the past, and on links to agricultural improvement which include land reclamation, draining and warping. It shows that a simple explanation of enclosure in terms of driving up rents and allowing individual farmers to take their own farming decisions, fails to take into account the particular local circumstances of this area. Using a combination of enclosure documents and related material such as glebe terriers, land tax assessments, census materials, the 1801 agricultural returns and estate papers it sets out to show how agricultural improvement transformed both the landscape and the farming techniques in this area. In this process it covers a range of related topics including landownership, population, and the socio-economic structure of the villages of north-west Lindsey. It shows clearly that in this area enclosure is as much as anything associated with land drainage, and with improvements brought about by warping. These processes were interwoven, and separating enclosure out as a single movement underestimates the complexity of the farming arrangements required to ensure the most productive farming in this area.

OBITUARY LAWEENCE ROGER LUMLEY 11TH EARL OF SCARBROUGH, K.G., P.O., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., G.C.V.O. 27 JULY 1896-29 JUNE 1969 In the second half of the twentieth century all privilege, even that which has been fairly earned by long and honourable service, appears to be suspect, especially among the young. Indeed, the more extreme exponents in the universities of this latter-day egalitarianism are hardly willing to accord ordinary respect, let alone deference, even to senior scholars of outstanding distinction and international celebrity. In this there is a certain irony, inasmuch as in all recorded history there have never been students more privileged than the present generation of British undergraduates. Even so, it may be conceded that the growth of egalitarian feeling is not wholly unhealthy. If there are a few who carry it to extremes in order to satisfy their own sense of self-importance, there are probably even fewer who would hanker after a return to the eighteenth century, when men of talent could hope for advancement only by writing in terms of fawning adulation to and about their patrons ; and, whereas most people are still prepared to accept that a reasonable degree of privilege may be honestly earned, there is undoubtedly a growing impatience with hereditary privilege arising from nothing more laudable than the accident of birth. Yet, even for hereditary privilege there may still be something to be said. By any standards, Roger Lumley, eleventh Earl of Scarbrough, was a privileged man. Born to a position of patrician affluence, educated at Eton, Sandhurst, and Oxford, wielding great influence in his home county of Yorkshire and moving in the highest social circles in London, he was indeed blessed from the outset with formidable advantages.
