PLAY THE MAN!

Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley may be two men of which you have never heard. It was an October, 1555 day much like the days we have been having when they were on their way to being martyred for their faith in Jesus Christ. ‘Play the man’ Latimer said to Ridley as they were being prepared to be burned at the stake.

I believe I Corinthians 16: 13-14 tell us what Latimer meant. “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” Men’s discipleship provides an opportunity to be watchful, stand firm, and act like men with other believers in the faith. Proverbs 27:17 tells us ‘Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.’

Contact Tom Deason for discipleship opportunities.

From time to time all of us need encouragement. How can we encourage one another? It is stated in the preceding verse 10, “(Christ) died for us so that …we may live together with him…” Nothing can separate us from our present life with Christ or our anticipated eternal life with Christ. No mater how tough and difficult it is at times in our lives, Christ never abandons us.

It’s a good idea for each of us to remind one another of this truth. We need to encourage each other in our various responsibilities and We will be participating in this ministries as we serve our Lord and our fellow believers. 5 5 Some Thoughts From Pastor Greg

Learning From History: 500 Years Ago …

When I was in high school and college, history simply seemed to be a list of facts and dates that we had to memorize for the exam—apparently, I was too naïve to recognize the value of understanding how these various events influenced our lives. Then, I met Dr. Edwin Diebler and this Church History scholar grabbed my attention with amazing stories and lessons that showed how the vast majority of what revolves around our lives culturally is due to the background of the Church. Looking back, I can clearly express that there are many things that have shaped my life, but I have no doubt that studying the history of the Church is one of the most beneficial. Part of my passion for knowing and teaching God’s Word is due to what Church History has taught me. Therefore, as we celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation led by , I want to provide some insights about one of the most important events of all time. Some of the recent articles I’ve read suggest that there are some significant cultural similarities between what was happening in the Church during the late 1400’s and leading into the 1500’s and what is happening today. Years before the Reformation, various expressions of faith began to disappear from society. There was a marked decline in sincerity of worship—people found their practices had become empty because much was based on ritual and routine, rather than heartfelt praise and gratitude toward God. Among many who tried to emphasize and redefine the essential doctrines related to salvation was Martin Luther. One of his statements (given as a response to those who questioned him) says, “I consider myself convicted by the testimony of Holy Scripture, which is my basis. My conscience is captive to the Word of God!” On October 31, 1517, Luther distributed his well—known Ninety-five Theses challenging the Church’s beliefs and practices about sin, forgiveness, and salvation. Stemming from this, the Reformers developed a statement that focused on what has become known as the Five Solas. This is based on the Latin term meaning “alone.” The Five Solas are: Faith Alone (Sola Fide) People are forgiven of their sins by admitting “I can do nothing to save myself. It’s simply a matter of depending on God and trusting that Jesus Christ paid for my sin through His death and resurrection.” Scripture Alone () The Bible alone reveals to people what God has done to provide for our forgiveness and freedom from the penalty of sin. The Church must acknowledge the Bible as God’s authoritative and trustworthy guidebook for living a life of faith alone! Christ Alone (Sola Christus) There is only one Savior for all people! We live in a diverse world with many different backgrounds, belief systems, and perspectives on sin and salvation. But Jesus Christ is the One and Only Savior for every culture, creed, community, country, or continent. Grace Alone (Sola Gratia) God’s provision of forgiveness and freedom from the penalty of sin is a gift. People deserve the punishment that Jesus Christ received when He died as the Ultimate Substitute. No one can earn any portion of the benefits Christ offers. It is by grace alone! Glory to God Alone (Sola Deo Gloria) Recognition and appreciation is a big deal—everyone enjoys receiving honor and praise. But in the area and arena of salvation from sin, God gets all the glory! The Reformers made it abundantly clear: God alone deserves the recognition for our glorious gift of forgiveness and freedom from the punishment and power of sin! These five statements paint a portrait of what every faithful follower of Christ should maintain as a set of core values for life! God desires each of us to live in a way that illustrates how much we treasure and cherish the most precious gift anyone can ever receive.

Mission of the Month-Voice of the Martyrs The Voice of the Martyrs is a nonprofit, interdenominational Christian missions organization dedicated to serving our persecuted family worldwide through practical and spiritual assistance and leading other members of the body of Christ into fellowship with them.

This mission is based on Hebrews 13:3;“Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.” Our church currently supports this ministry with a monthly gift. There are also opportunities on their website: https://www.persecution.com. You can sign up for the free newsletter, keep informed by subscribing to the weekly prayer alert, adopt a front line worker, send action packs filled with basic needs, write letters to prisoners and pray for persecuted brothers and sisters.

Please check out the bulletin board in the hallway by the restrooms for more information on this ministry.
