  • Cassidinae from Costa Rica.Indd
Genus Vol. 14 (1): 109-120 Wrocław, 15 IV 2003 Tortoise beetles of Costa Rica: new records and localities (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) CAROLINE S. CHABOO Department of Invertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West @ 79th St., New York, NY 10024-5192, [email protected] ABSTRACT. Sixteen species in 12 genera in the cassidine tribes Cassidini, Delocraniini, Goniocheniini, Physonotini, Spilophorini, and Stolaini, are reported from Costa Rica for the first time. Localities for these new records are presented. Data are based on collections accumulated under the intensive survey of Costa Rica by Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio). Key words: entomology, zoogeography, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae, Costa Rica, new records. INTRODUCTION CHAMPION (1893) recorded 47 species of chrysomelid cassidines for Costa Rica. Cassidine diversity in Costa Rica has been further documented in BLACKWELDER (1946), FLOWERS and JANZEN (1997), BOROWIEC (1996, 1999, 2001, 2002) and CHABOO (2002). The intensive inventory effort of Costa Rica’s Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio) has accumulated a large collection of specimens in just over 13 years. In this paper, I provide 16 new species records along with provincial collecting data. Localities are provided for all new records, with provinces listed alphabetically and dates abbreviated to roman numerals. Each locality corresponds to a specimen in INBio's collection. Taxon names follow the nomenclature of BOROWIEC (1999). 110 CAROLINE CHABOO ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: This paper is only possible because of the tremendous work of INBio’s parataxonomists who have collected a large quantity of material and processed, mounted and labeled the specimens. I am indebted to Angel SOLÍS for access to the collections in his care, and for his encouragement in preparing this manuscript.

Land cover changes and consequent management entail discrepancies in carbon sequestration provided by forest ecosystems and its accounting. Currently there is a lack of sufficient and harmonized data for Ukraine that can be used for the robust and spatially explicit assessment of forest provisioning and regulation of ecosystem services. In the frame of this research, we established an experimental polygon (area 45 km2) in Northern Ukraine aiming at estimating main forest carbon stocks and fluxes and determining the impact caused by natural disturbances and harvest for the study period of 2010–2015.

  • El Complejo Tronadora: Ceramica Del Periodo Formativo Medio En La Cuenca De Arenal, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
VINCULOS 11 (1-2): 111-118,1985 EL COMPLEJO TRONADORA: CERAMICA DEL PERIODO FORMATIVO MEDIO EN LA CUENCA DE ARENAL, GUANACASTE, COSTA RICA JOHN W. HOOPES Dept. of Anthropology, Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts, E.E. ABSTRACT Sire SUrJJey and excavation by the Proyecto Prehistórico Arenal has revealed the existence ofa ceramic complex in eastern Guanacaste which is closely related to the early Chaparrón and La Monrai'ia complexes of Costa Rica. Geological data support a Middle Formative (1000-500 B.C.) date for this material, and suggest that environmental change waS" a major factor in the initial settlement of the Arenal Basin. Ceramic data also suggest a large population in this region during the early part of the Zoned Bichrome period, at which time cultures of the Cordillera de Tilarán were close~l' related to those ofwestern Greater Nicoya.

The dataset “Spatial radionuclide deposition data from the 60 km area around the 15 Chernobyl nuclear power plant: results from a sampling survey in 1987” is the latest in a series of data 16 to be published by the Environmental Information Data Centre (EIDC) describing samples collected 17 and analysed following the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in 1986. The data result from a 18 survey carried out by the Ukrainian Institute of Agricultural Radiology (UIAR) in April and May 19 1987 and include information on sample sites, dose rate, radionuclide (zirconium-95, niobium-95, 20 ruthenium-106, caesium-134, caesium-137 and cerium-144) deposition, and exchangeable caesium- 21 134 and 137.

(2020): Green space trends in small towns of Kyiv region according to EOS Land Viewer – a case study. J. For. Sci., 66: 252–263. Abstract: The state of ecological balance of cities is determined by the analysis of the qualitative composition of green space. The lack of green space inventory in small towns in the Kyiv region has prompted the use of express analysis provided by the EOS Land Viewer platform, which allows obtaining an instantaneous distribution of the urban and suburban territories by a number of vegetative indices and in recent years – by scene classification. The purpose of the study is to determine the current state and dynamics of the ratio of vegetation and built-up cover of the territories of small towns in Kyiv region with establishing the rating of towns by eco-balance of territories. The distribution of the territory of small towns by the most common vegetation index NDVI, as well as by S AVI, which is more suitable for areas with vegetation coverage of less than 30%, has been monitored.

  • Impact of Tourism Related Development on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica Summary Report
Impact of Tourism Related Development on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica Summary Report By: Martha Honey Erick Vargas William H. Durham Center for Responsible Travel A Nonprofit Research Organization Stanford University and Washington, DC www.responsibletravel.org April 2010 1 Foreword The following Summary Report, based on two years of research and some two dozen individual studies by a team of Costa Rican and U.S. experts, offers the first multidimensional analysis of the phenomena that Costa Ricans have dubbed “residential tourism.” While this term has become popular, most Costa Ricans have had little understanding of its dimensions and implications for the country, the country’s Pacific coast, or Costa Rica’s tourism industry. The study traces the origins of this coastal transformation from the 1970s to the present, with particular focus on the real estate and construction boom and bust (caused by the global economic crisis) from 2002 through 2009. As members of the Advisory Committee that has assisted the research team, we believe that the study’s findings and recommendations can play a constructive role in helping to foment public discussion, civic engagement, and policy reforms to ensure a sustainable economy in coastal and marine tourism.
