uan Carlos Arce, a lawyer for the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights, (CENIDH), says social media sites are the most common vehicle to intimidate independent journalists during this period of Jgovernment repression. CENIDH has received several complaints and reports from journalists that have suffered attacks, defamation, and stigmatization. Arce said that social networks are being used to “crimi- nalize journalists,” with the goal of “immobilizing them,” and stop them from informing. One of the journalists that faced threats through social me- dia was the Matagalpa correspondent for Radio Corporación, Aurora Leyton. Leyton reported threats against her and her family to the CENIDH. Orteguistas have also employed other forms of harassment and intimidation. On Tuesday morning, VS TV journalist Ger- ald Chávez, found his family home in Carazo spray painted with the message Plomo, FSLN, no olvidamos. nformation is another weapon in Nicaragua. It’s not the lack of it that’s dangerous: it’s the manipu- lation. The violence and unrest in Nicaragua is easy to see, but there’s an active campaign to shift blame and confuse. I Our first job as journalists is to seek truth and report it. At The Tico Times, our limited resources and lack of access has made it hard to produce original reporting from Nicaragua. However we know people who do that every single day. The journalists at La Prensa. We’re proud to announce we’ve partnered with La Pren- sa to translate their stories and amplify them to our En- glish-speaking readers who want to stay informed. La Prensa is a paper we trust to seek the truth and report it during these tough times. When we went to Nicaragua during the first week of protests they welcomed us with open arms, and we reported alongside them during an active flood of mis- information. We’ve seen how the online misinformation has been used to try and shape elections or recruit terrorists. Now we’re see- ing how it’s being used to try and hide the truth in Nicaragua. This is new territory for all of us. Even a decade ago, the situation in Nicaragua might have played out differently. With most of the TV stations, newspapers and radio stations in Nic- aragua under control of the government or government sym- pathizers, the first images of repression on April 19 could have been easily silenced. But instead, independent journalists, cell phones, and widespread internet availability helped spread these images across the world. That’s why we believe our role in this cur- rent media landscape is one of amplification. We believe the best way to drown out misinformation is by helping shout the truth. La Prensa has had reporters on the ground from the first day of protests. Some of them have been beaten, robbed, stalked, and threatened for doing the job. Their values are the same as ours: truth. That’s why each week, you can to read selected stories from La Prensa here on The Tico Times. he Costa Rican government has announced plans to ramp up police presence at popular tourist hotspots after two female tourists were murdered in separate beach towns. T “We’re going to increase Fuerza Pública personnel in delegations with high tourist presence,” said Vice Minister of Security Eduardo Solano as the government re- sponded to two high-profile attacks on tourists in August. “We’re going to conduct a sci- entific analysis in our most visited areas and those with the most crime to see where it’s most pertinent to increase personnel.” The boost in police presence will cost an estimated $1 million a year for the next four years. The issue of tourist safety became a national concern after a Spanish tourist was murdered in Tortuguero, on the northern Caribbean coast, on August 4, followed by the murder of a Mexican tourist in Santa Teresa, on the Pacific coast, the very next day. The suspects in both murders have been apprehended. “We need to stop being afraid to talk to tourists about safety,” the Minister of Tourism, Maria Amalia Revelo said. Tourism is one of Costa Rica’s main sources of income. Nearly 3 million people vis- ited Costa Rica in 2017, and they spent $3.87 billion during their stays. The country has 284 officers in its tourism police force. They’re spread across 18 locations, speak English, and are trained to help foreign tourists. Revelo said an app, scheduled for release in December, with up-to-date information about security is being developed for tourists and business owners. The government will also train 2,000 business owners in risk prevention strategies. Additionally, Revelo said Costa Rica will provide more infrastructure and equipment to police in tourist hotspots. n 2012, The Tico Times closed its doors after 56 years of publication. The global financial crisis combined with paper’s struggle to adapt to the online landscape created a perfect storm of troubles that our publication wasn’t able to bear. I But irreverent and feisty, The Tico Times returned as an online-only publication thanks to donations from readers and a volunteer staff. We’re back to publishing special print editions, although we’re not out of the weeds yet. Like every publication, we’re navigating a constantly changing landscape and always hanging on by a thread. Luckily, the internet doesn’t just give us a different place to publish stories - it also opens us up to new ways to tell them. Text, photo, video, audio, 360, and any combination of the former: now it’s not just our job to find what stories to tell, but to figure out the best way to tell them. Audio is a great way to bring readers closer to the story and to the people in them. It lets us dive a bit deeper into certain topics and keep you informed while you drive, go for a run, or enjoy your morning pinto. In August, we were proud to launch new podcast, The Tico Times Dispatch. In our first episode, we talked to Tim Rogers, a former Tico Times reporter who also ran our Nicaraguan newspaper, The Nica Times. Rogers has reported on Nicaragua for 18 years and lived there for nine. Now he’s Fusion’s editor. He discussed his experience covering the protests in Nicaragua, dealing with fake news, and Daniel Ortega’s government. Listen on Stitcher, iTunes, Google Play or, of course, ticotimes.net/tags/tico-times-dispatch. 6 KNOW THYSELF: Find your signature cocktail at Bebedero

Microbiology lab offers services in Jacó

For the microbiologist Dr. Marco Rodríguez, laboratory work is an essential tool for clinical diagnosis – and he's offering these services in the Central Pacific coastal town of Jacó.

"Microbiology allows us to offer detailed follow-through on a patient's condition," Dr. Rodríguez told The Tico Times during a visit to Jacó Lab, adding that the tests he offers range from basic tests such as blood type and pregnancy to complex analyses such as cancer screening. It is not necessary to feel sick to get a screening: you can prevent diseases and even save your life with a blood test.

For more information, visit Jacó Lab at the Jacó Walk center downtown, call 2643-2118, or contact [email protected]
