The following fourteen taxa are lectotypified: Gonolobus bayatensis Urb., G. broadwayae Schltr., G. ciliatus Schltr., G. dictyopetalus Urb. & Ekman, G. ekmanii Urb., G. nipensis Urb., G. sintenisii Schltr., G. tigrinus Griseb., G. tobagensis Urb., G. variifolius Schltr., Ibatia mollis Griseb., Poicilla costata Urb., Poicilla tamnifolia Griseb., and Poicillopsis crispiflora Urb. Gonolobus grenadensis Schltr. is neotypified. A new name and a new combination in Matelea Aubl. are respectively proposed for Jacaima parvifolia Proctor and J. costata (Urb.) Rendle var. goodfriendii Proctor. RESUMEN Se aportan tipos y su localización de taxa de la subtribu Gonolobinae (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) en las Indias Occidentales. Recently, based on molecular data, classification of Apocynaceae has undergone considerable revisions. According to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group III (APGIII, 2009), and the update of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group APG (APGIV, 2016) the family Asclepiadaceae is now included in the Apocynaceae. The family, as currently recognized, includes some 1500 species divided in about 424 genera and five subfamilies: Apocynoideae, Rauvolfioideae, Asclepiadoideae, Periplocoideae, and Secamonoideae. In this research selected species from the previous families Asclepiadaceae and Apocynaceae were morphologically investigated in an attempt to distinguish morphological important characters supporting their new molecular classification. 40 morphological characters were treated as variables and analyzed for cluster of average linkage between groups using the statistical package SPSS 16.0. The area was surveyed and 8 Asclepi- adaceous plant species were collected. These plant species are Calotropis procera (Aiton) W. T. Aiton. Caralluma edulis (Edgew.) Benth., Leptadenia pyrotecnica (Forssk.) Decne., Oxystelma esculentum (L. f.) R. Br., Pentatropis nivalis (J. F. Gmel.) D. V. Field & J. R. I. Wood, Pergularia daemia (Forssk.) Blatt.& McCann., Periploca aphylla Decne. and Stapelia gigantea N.E.Br. The study showed that five plants were used ethnobotanically in the area. All the plants were deposited as voucher specimens in the Department of plant sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, for future references. Complete macro & microscopic detailed morphological features of the species have been discussed. Taxo- nomic key was developed to differentiate closely related taxa. Botanical Pharmacognosy of Holostemma Ada-Kodien Schult

Sudhakaran Madathilparambil Vasu* ABSTRACT Background: Holostemma ada-kodien Schult. is a perennial, twinning, laticiferous climbing herb belongs to the family Asclepiadaceae. It is an important medicinal plant with rejuvenate properties, used in Ayurveda for pro- moting vitality and life. The roots are sweet, ophthalmic, emollient, aphrodisiac, expectorant and galactagogue. It is highly specialized for the richness of a diverse array of aminoacids such as alanine, aspartic acid, glycine, serine, thereonine, valine, and terpenoid sugars. Aim: The present study was performed with the objectives of elaborating the macroscopic and histo-morpho diagnostic profile ofHolostemma ada-kodien and analyse the quantitative, and powder microscopic peculiarities to support its pharmacognostic characterization. Materials and Methods: microscopic evaluation, quantitative standards and powder microscopy were carried out using the stem, root tuber, root and leaves. Results: Distribution of uniseriate, tricellular clothing trichomes in the epidermal tissues of the midrib, entire leaf margin with campylodromous major venation pattern, amphistomatic epidermis with anisocytic stomata, dorsiventral differentiation of mesophyll, small palisade ratio, small stomatal index, and the vascular system with several free collateral bundles in the petiole were features characteristic of the species. Gelatinous fibers distributed as concentric ‘white rings’ in the cortical tissues of the stem as distinct groups, deposition of druses crystals of calcium oxalate in the epidermal tissues of the lamina, ground tissues of petiole, cortical tissues of stem, root, root tubers and parenchymatous pith of the stem. -

It is compared with two morphologically similar species, Cynanchum decipiens and C. longipedunculatum. Cynanchum brevipedunculatum differs from the preceeding species in having much bigger leaves, adaxially sparsely strigillose, abaxially glabrous or sparsely strigillose on veins, shorter peduncle and the very distinctive bowl-shaped corona. A comprehensive morphological description of C. brevipedunculatum is provided, together with photographs, and a conservation assessment for this rare vine species. 11 Medicinal Plant Species in Commercial Demand: Consolidated Inventory and Analysis The present study has resulted in compilaon of a comprehensive inventory of 1622 herbal raw drugs correlated to 1178 medicinal plant species in commercial demand. Total consumpon of herbal raw drugs in the country for the year 2014-15 has been esmated at 5,12,000 MT with corresoponding trade value of ` 7,000 crore. Herbal raw drugs obtained from 242 medicinal plant species collected, culvated or imported largely for use in health care are used in high quanies, with each species being used in quanes exceeding 100 MT per year. The growth of the sector calls for acve management of the medicinal plant resource so as to ensure sustained supply to meet the needs of domesc herbal industry, exports and of the households/ folk healers. Many of the species collected from the forests, have succumbed to destrucve harvesng pressure with wild populaons of many of these species having come under tremendous stress. Himalayan herbs and tropical medicinal trees form the most vulnerable group that needs immediate conservaon acon. Many of the habitats outside forests, hitherto forming abundant source of many herbal raw drugs, have either become polluted or have got sacrificed at the altar of development, making the herbal raw drug supplies from this source a scarcity. 257 Medicinal Plants: An Assessment of their Demand and Supply in India 11.1. Some of them are recognized and classified as RET medicinal plants depending on their “Threat Status”. RET medicinal plants are Rare, Endangered and Threatened forest species growing and multiplied naturally in restricted areas. These plant species play predominant role as folk remedies against many diseases. In the present study, 33 RET plant species were explored, identified and documented from Talakona Hills of Andhra Pradesh. The main aim of the study is to get the data which provide information of RET medicinal plant biodiversity. This data helps to design the sustainable and conservation measures. INTRODUCTION Plants are widely used as source in medical field for several thousand years according to Abu (2005). Traditional healers in India use 2,500 plants species while 100 species of plants are found to serve as regular source of medicines (Pei, 2001). According to World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the people depend on traditional medicines for their primary health care needs all over the world. One fourth of medicinal drugs are based on plants and their derivatives in both underdeveloped and developing countries (Principe, 1991). About 10% of World’s vascular plant species representing 20,000 to 25,000 species are under severe threat of varying degrees according to IUCN on a global basis. -
