Social Welfare Association of (SWAN)

ANNUAL REPORT, 2018

FOREWORD

In 2018, SWAN continued its core projects; education and child development, community health and sanitation, maternal and child health and livelihood alternatives in providing the better opportunities to the underprivileged children and disadvantaged women of Nepal. As a part of the reconstruction project, SWAN completed the construction of the 2 room spaced Early Childhood Development (ECD) Center of the Sita Basic School in Sindhupalchowk while 6 rooms spaced building is under construction at the Shree Birendra Secondary School in Parbat. SWAN reached out to 177 (88 Boys, 89 Girls) underprivileged children through scholarship program across the country this year .

The implementation of School Health Education Program in 20 community schools in a bid to create awareness on hygiene and sanitation amongst school children and their families in Parbat and Baglung district remained productive. As a part of the child friendly school approach, SWAN initiated this project in which handwashing events were very participatory and popular among school children and communities.

SWAN has also focused on the maternal and child health project in the very remotely situated Namkha Rural Municipality (RM) of Upper Humla. The ultimate aim of the project is to strengthen the 6 birthing centers in Namkha RM through logistics support, skilled birth attendants (SBA) trainings including case management skills, proper treatment, referral mechanism and community outreach programs. After the project intervention of SWAN, we are starting to see the real change with the fi rst ever delivery of the healthy baby in SWAN supported Kermi Health Facility of Namkha Rural Municipality, Humla. The main challenge of this project is to educate and encourage women and their families to deliver their babies at the health facilities.

SWAN has supported more than 500 women engaged in off seasonal vegetable farming and goat raising activities so as to improve their livelihoods. Likewise, over 200 women were trained to enhance the alternative farming skills for the sustainability of the income generation projects. Such projects have been helping women to become more confi dent and independent while also enable them to handle the household expenditures easily and sending their children to schools.

SWAN provided a warm clothes such as sweater, woolen caps, socks and trousers for the 498 school children of Baglung and Nuwakot districts who were deprived of the warm clothes in winter. We are grateful to all our supporters in Nepal and around the world for sharing the warmth, generosity and compassion which helps us ensure to keep children warm during winter.

I look forward to the support of all to continue our shared vision of helping people help themselves. SWAN believes together we can achieve many great things.

2. MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH (MCH) PROJECT has a signifi cant need and potential to improve maternal and child health (MCH) services for mothers and families in the community. First baby delivered in the SWAN supported Kermi Health Facility, Humla

Our Project Coordinator Sushila Shah said, 'delivering a baby in the health facility for the fi rst time is already a milestone for the people of the Namkha Rural Municipality - this successful case will attract pregnant women to the newly strengthened birthing centers which are remotely situated resulting to save the lives of women and newborns. The seeds of change have started sowing. Thanks to our donors for supporting our life-saving project."

At fi rst we appreciate the income generation programs of SWAN in a far-off village like ours to help women thrive! Goat distribution and shed management training for the most vulnerable women is the big opportunity to break out of poverty and exercise greater power over our lives."

4. ECO TOURISM In 2018, 6 groups from Germany, UK and Austria visited the SWAN's Project area in Baglung under the project tour event with the kind support of Eco Trip Nepal Treks and Expedition Pvt. Ltd and travel-to- nature-Asia.

SWAN has taken up the responsibility of helping tourists reach our project areas like Baglung. This has also helped render direct and indirect support to other development projects of SWAN.

Besides immersing themselves in the local culture and exploring the lifestyles of the rural villages in Nepal, many tourists, after seeing the impact made by SWAN have also shown interest in our core programs while also garnering attention of potential donors. This project has thus become a medium in helping us fi nd new donors, create jobs at the local level and raise awareness among foreigners and locals about tourist destinations and conservation of biodiversity.

7 ANNUAL REPORT, 2018

Four Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) including me got an opportunity to receive the Skilled Birth Attendants (SBA) training conducted by the apex body of the Ministry of Health which was fi nanced by SWAN Nepal. We have received the core competencies like handling pregnancies and deliveries, case management skills, providing immediate neonatal care while also acquire knowledge on strengthening treatment and referral mechanism. Now we're empowered and ready to deliver our skills at the working site. However, our challenge still remains to encourage communities to bring the pregnant women deliver their babies at the health facility. As Namkha Rural Municipality has partnered with SWAN to upgrade the existing birthing and providing staffs in the health facility regularly, we are optimistic to improve the maternal-child health services in our remotely situated communities."

Urgen Buti Lama ANM, Muchu Health Post, Humla

Earlier, children were living in the unhealthy conditions due to the poor sanitation practices in the hostel which would affect the health of the students in a long way. Therefore, the renovation of the blind hostel with the proper furnishings has been a great support for these students to enable them to thrive in their educations. In the meantime, with this kind of support, it creates realization among local stakeholders to keep the hostel organized and safe."

Dhana Devi Sharma Field Coordination Assistant, SWAN (Baglung)
