For over 800 years, Portsmouth Harbour has played a key role in the history of Britain and the world.

Steeped in naval history, the shores of Portsmouth Harbour have played host to thousands of ships belonging to the worlds greatest Naval Fleet. Defence reductions have enabled areas previously restricted to the public to be reinvented offering spectacular new leisure attractions and maritime events!

HMS Victory, Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard

As one of the Millennium Commission’s twelve landmark projects around the UK, and the £86 million Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Millennium Scheme, the world-class transformation means that the harbour will continue to play a key role - but now as an international visitor destination!

One element of the renaissance links everything in Portsmouth Harbour together - nearly six kilometres of new public promenades on both Portsmouth and Gosport sides of the harbour.

On the Portsmouth route of the new Millennium Promenade you will discover exciting new attractions such as the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s interactive and high-tech attraction Action Stations! and , a lifestyle destination with entertainment, designer outlet shopping and cosmopolitan bars and restaurants. Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth RBA000144-0005

The award winning Millennium Promenade with its superb vistas across the harbour features a chain motif, symbolising partnership between the communities of Portsmouth and Gosport, past and present.

Extending nearly three kilometres from the Royal Navy Submarine Museum to the Priddy’s Hard Heritage Area, the Gosport Millennium Promenade features Timespace - one of the largest vertical sundials in the world. Timespace, Gosport

Spanning 40 metres across with a mast 17 metres high at the centre, Timespace was created in celebration of the year 2000 drawing a spiritual link between Gosport’s Holy Trinity Church and Portsmouth Harbour via the new 183 metre Haslar Marina Millennium Pier. The Promenade’s new walkways, lighting and street furniture all complement the beautiful Falkland Gardens featuring a 7.5 metre wide mosaic to commemorate those who left Gosport to serve in the D-Day landings Falkland Gardens Mosaic, Gosport and the Falklands conflict.

At Priddy’s Hard you will discover Gosport’s latest attraction - Explosion! the Museum of Naval Firepower. Tracing the development of naval firepower from gunpowder to the Exocet missiles, it also tells the story of the men and women who worked with explosives every day from the battle of Trafalgar to the Gulf War.
