Dear Professor Wendy Thomson, I'm Writing to You on Behalf of More Ilyas Benmouna Activities Officer Students’ Union UCL 25 Gordon Street London WC1H 0AY Professor Wendy Thomson 25 June 2021 University of London Senate House, Malet St, London WC1E 7HU Sent via e-mail Dear Professor Wendy Thomson, I’m writing to you on behalf of more than 1,300 signatories backing our call to save the Student Central swimming pool and facilities. We are saddened to hear that Birkbeck University is finalising the purchase of the lease on the Student Central building from the University of London and plan to remove the swimming pool, sports facilities, live music venue and other associated facilities. We urge you to reconsider your decision. The pool is used by thousands of students, local residents and members of the community - removing it would significantly restrict access to physical activity spaces for these groups. A transparent and open consultation is needed before this community asset is removed. Specifically, we ask that you: • Present this letter and its signatories on our behalf to the University of London Board of Trustees, or allow us to make a representation to the Board on this matter. • Conduct a review of the facilities and their benefit to its users, and consider how the building could be developed to include the existing sporting and social facilities and the live music venue. • Share with us any impact assessments carried out as part of the sale in relation to removing facilities. • Include a stipulation in the lease agreement to maintain a swimming pool. The pool is the largest in central London and there are few alternative pools nearby, all central London pools are heavily used, and none have the capacity to absorb all the current users from the Student Central pool. When so much effort is spent improving the health and wellbeing of people in our community of universities and beyond, removing the pool is a devastating backwards step. The plans are in direct opposition to the values and mission of the University of London, namely to enable social good, to transform people’s lives through education, and to strengthen bonds across regional, national, cultural, economic and political boundaries.
