BMWTCNSW NEWSLETTER 3 DECEMBER 2008

November has been a good month, one which sees me with a new BMW parked in my shed. I am grinning madly, and am very happy, to now have a bike that is packed full of modern technical advances, such as a big 12 volt electrical system complete with features such as a headlight (that works at night time) and it even has indicators (yuk). And the bike is fitted with a tacho!!!! Yep its great, and nearly twenty years younger than my previous ‘newest bike’. The new bike is of course black with white pin stripes, and so it looks just like a BMW BMW CLUB OF DENMARK should, but this one has a telescopic front end! VALE Herbert de Longueville A native of Cologne Germany, Herbert first visited Australia in 1961. He returned in 1963 permanently & settled in Ashfield, working for Qantas. He took to our lifestyle with gusto, enjoying snorkelling, target shooting & fishing. But it wasn’t until the relatively mature age of 38 that Herbert discovered an activity for which he is best remembered: bikes; it quickly became an enjoyable passion. At the club he soon developed that typical Australian self-effacing humour, bemoaning (often with a ‘Fawlty Towers- esque’ German accent) petty bureaucracy; “In Germany ve haf vaws to make it vork!. Other topics often discussed are, these days, very politically verboten. Herbert’s love of ensured that he was well catered for by such luminaries as Miles Stevano - BMW, Sandy - Staintune & Sid Seymour - Tom Byrne. A picture of Herbert taking delivery of the (quite likely) first GS in Australia appeared in Motorcycle News with the caption “Baron Herbert de Longueville proudly accepting the keys to his new bike from Sid Seymour of Tom Byrne”. Yes, European nobility! But Herbert was still one of the blokes. However, the Baron’s part-time television career was short lived but certainly noteworthy!! One memory I have is hearing a Staintune-equipped GS, barking up Parramatta Road in afternoon peak hour! mak- ing full use of the inside lane, Herbert astride, helmetless!! This was in the days of helmet exemptions. Herbert’s re- sponse “I told them I get migraines wearing a helmet so they gave me an exemption” –his ‘petty bureaucracy’ again. Having spent some time in Germany (and Yugoslavia) myself in 1991 just after the Berlin Wall came down, we would recall favourite areas: the Mosel & Rhine Rivers, the castles, ‘the vine, the vomen und the song’. Occasionally I would be a party to a, though not-unexpected, thoughtful observation of the new Europe. Such comments were often followed by a twinkling glance over the top of his trademark little round glasses. Very little was ever mentioned about the early days & we would quickly resume our Sgt Schultz: “Don’t mention ze vores” impersonations. As so often happens our contact eased & we didn’t reacquaint ‘til last year, after his diagnosis & his return to Ger- many to visit his family. Returning to Australia he stoically battled on through chemo & radiotherapy. Herbert passed away peacefully on November 8 in St. Vincent’s Hospice, The BMW Club extends to Jenni & her family our sincerest sympathies. Bill Sparks (Bones)

Riding On - Vale Herbert We recently received news of the passing of Herbert de Longueville. Herbert was an active club member and keen GS rider who participated in a number of Karuah River rallies and other club events.

At Karuah, Herbert was impossible to miss even from miles away. As a sun worshipper, his top priority was to strip down to the absolute minimum to make the most of the sunshine and the rally atmosphere. With Herbert, your first (and false) impression was of an intimidating, ascetic presence. But this belied a man with a wickedly dry sense of humour and a positive sparkle that energised all he came in contact with. His research into family background re- vealed direct lineage from nobility, and he took great delight in introducing himself as a genuine Baron. And he was absolutely genuine in every sense of the word, making us all appreciate what a great club we have. Herbert, we'll miss you dearly mate.

BMWTCNSW NEWSLETTER 10 DECEMBER 2008

For a great pie and coffee, this place is the PITS !! In last month’s newsletter you would have found a small leaflet which advertised the GS-911.

This small device is little larger than a cigarette pack and enables the rider to diagnose faults using either a computer or mobile phone.

All the user has to do is down load some free software from the web and presto, your mobile phone becomes able to read fault codes, clear many of these and if not, then you simply call the 24/7 back up service to get some advice as to how to get back on the road with the minimum of fuss.

If you have seen the Pixar animated feature film CARS, then you could be forgiven for thinking the setting above Radiator Springs was based on the view from the Pie In The Sky (PITS) on the old road.

Perched high above the F3 north of Sydney, this old fuel stop is one of the busiest Bike Stops in Sydney for riders heading north or just out for a loop on the Old Road. The pies are excellent, so is the coffee, milkshakes and the patrons aren’t too bad either.

Seated beneath the pine trees and shade cloth this is the perfect rest stop even after the hottest ride.

Day Run to Mount Wilson It is only another 50 metres or so to Chinamans Hat – just below this rock formation is the overhang in which Well it seemed like a good idea at the time, to take a the gallery has been painted. short run up to Mount Wilson to see the indigenous art in one of the local rock galleries.

This run is only 120 kms round trip from the BP at North Richmond and is all tar. There are dirt routes to get here too, but we decided that with the temperature dropping and the forecast for rain we’d stay on the Bells Lie of Road all the way.

Fuelling up at the start point, the lady behind the counter advised that snow was on the road at Lucknow just east of Bathurst. The temp at that stage was 9 degrees and while there were patches of blue, most of the sky was hidden behind some very black clouds.

Bells is always a great run and even n the wet it was no exception. We turned onto the Mount Wilson road to discover a wind storm of some proportions must have recently gone through. Leaf litter, one or two branches and one tree had fallen across the road. The local emergency services crew were busying away with a chain saw by the time we turned onto the very short dirt It’s hard to tell what is real and what may have been track that runs from the fire station to the rocky car park. added since white settlement, however several of the pictures are never the less quite dramatic.

At the track head there is a sign indicating the all too short walk to China mans hat, so named because this rock formation looks exactly like one.

By the time we walked back to the bikes, the blackness was upon us and it was snowing!! Time to beat a retreat to the warmth of the local B&B and coffee shop. The MG car club had taken over so we decided to head back down the mountain to Bilpin and stop off at the Apple Bar – a great bikestop.

The track is easy walking and only 100 metres in you can see many grooves worn into the rock, as through the ages people would have sat here, looking out over the Blue Mountains while sharpening their spears and other tools.

Excellent food (try the Nowra salt & pepper squid), wine list and great coffee. Of course the Apple Pie is abso- lutely fresh and goes a treat after being snowed on in the ranges.

Lunch time behind us it was an easy run home – all up a great day run that could easily be turned into a weekend away in the Blue Mountains.

APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP/RENEWAL BMW Touring Club of New South Wales Incorporated (Incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act,1984)

The BMW Touring Club of NSW was founded in 1965, with an initial membership of 15 and we celebrated our 35th anniversary in October 2000. The aim of the club is to provide a social medium for BMW riders and motorcycle touring. It is not necessary for you to own a BMW motorcycle to join the club. There are a wide range of activities throughout the year, ranging from regular day rides, rallies (local, interstate and other BMW club rallies), runs with interstate BMW clubs and camping weekends. We have gained a large number of trophies from our attendance at rallies. The club also has regular maintenance days (where you can tap into a vast range of knowledge from our members). We have spare parts available at a slight discount for members and a variety of special tools for use when servicing, repairing or replacing components. We also have social evenings, an annual presentation night/dinner and a Christmas party. The club encourages family involvement in all events.
