“May is Youth Service Month”

Greetings from PHILIP CHONG District Governor 2015-16

In Rotary, the link with the youth from all our Clubs is amazing. Every club that I have visited engages with our Youth Programme in some way or another, whether it is Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Literacy programme in schools, and many others. Rotary International has four structured programs for Youth Service: Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and Rotary Youth Exchange.

From the assistance that we are giving to youth from a very young age, it is imperative that we continue to invest in encouraging youth to join Interact and Rotaract clubs. Here, they will slowly embrace the Rotary values of fellowship and community service as they journey through life.

These are the Rotarians of the future. The energy that Youth have is something for all of us to consider tapping into. Youth if empowered in humanitarian services may do more benefits to beneficiaries of the community under the supervision of their respective Rotary Club. When we start empowering the youth, we are lessening our burden on how we will be able to implement some of our projects. They are our junior partners and the more we involve them, the more we are expecting effective and efficient deliberation of our humanitarian services as Rotarian.

New Generations service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, involvement in community and international service projects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding. Rotary clubs should be committed to involving youth and young adults in their vocational, com- munity, and international service projects, and to providing programs and resources that support them. Indeed they are the hope of our Rotary World and more than anything else, they are “a Precious Gift to the World”.

District Activities We started May with the completion of the epic 25th District Conference, held in Chiang Mai, , with participation from more than 520 delegates from 93 clubs, 8 districts and 9 countries. This is, indeed, one of the largest turnouts for a District Conference. It was a multi-

district conference by default. What a marvelous achievement. We had two world class speakers: Former Rotary International President, Bhichai Rattakul, and Former Deputy Prime Minister of , Tun Dato’ Musa Bin Hitam. To top it all, we also had an excellent programme for the delegates and also for the spouses. In attendance was Rotary International President’s Representative, PDG Edgardo E. ‘ED’ Tumangan with spouse Teresita Nalagan-Tumangan. Well done Organising Chairman PP Woo Soo Poo, Deputy Organising Chair Wesley and the great team from D3310 and also from Chiang Mai, led by PDG Chamnan, PDG Suparie, PDG Waewdao, PP Morakat and members from the five Rotary Clubs in Chiang Mai.

Immediately, after the Conference, we had the Zone 6B Membership Planning meeting in Chiang Mai, where D3310 was declared Number One in membership growth. We have achieved 247 new members, making total of 2,055 members. Congratulations for the effort and fine teamwork, my dear friends.

This month, we are going to host RYLA in from 29 May to 1 June to be organised by RC Likas Bay.

We are not stopping here, yet. We are continuing the momentum to achieve our District goals of net growth of 300 members. If every club makes the effort to just bring in one new member, we will be there to celebrate our success. Please participate in the District 3310 Final Dash Membership Award. I am counting on every one of you to support this effort.

My wife, Len Nyuk and I, together with IPDG Andre and Norzan have attended the D3420 District Conference in Surabaya, Indonesia from 13 – 15 May, 2016. I have met my classmates DG from and also from D3410.

In line with the RI President, Ravi Ravindran and First Lady Vanathy’s official visit to for the Intercity Meet, on 21st May at Shangri-La hotel, I seek your strong support and participation for this important event. This is a district event organised by RC Singapore. I am counting on your support to make it a great success. Thank you. Len Nyuk and I are looking forward to meeting you there. Join us for this rare opportunity to be with our RI President.

We have another International Convention, the RI Seoul Convention from 28th May to 1st June, 2016. It is just around the corner. Come and experience this wonderful event and also meet the delegates from all walks of life, who are coming here to celebrate Rotary, and Be a Gift to The World.

See you all there!

Kind regards, Philip Chong Mau Kiong (Rotary Club of Likas Bay) District Governor 2015-16

Greetings from JESSEY YAP District Rotaract Representative 2015-16

Dear Rotaractors and friends,

My warmest greetings and peace to you all.

Big Congratulations to the Rotaract Club of ITE College Central and College West for their first installation for the term of 2015-16. Now our District 3310 have another 2 newly chartered Rotaract Clubs!

This is the very first conversion happened in our District 3310. RAC ITE College Central and Col- lege West were under Interact Club program previously, and after seeking the necessary approval and applications to convert, they finally got approval from Rotary District 3310 to convert from an Interact Club to a Rotaract Club.

In line with ‘Be A Gift to the World’, another Community service project was carried out by the Rotaract Club of Marina City. They participated in a mass clean up exercise named ‘Operation WE Clean Up!’ organised together with the Public Hygiene Council. 7 Rotaractors and 1 Rotarian from Rotary Club of Tanjong Pagar were involved the programme.

Rotaractors collected bags of trashes and at the same time enjoyed the moments together with Rotarian and the public. They personally hope that the public would stop littering and should throw all their rubbish into the trash bins.

Let’s do our best to keep the community a clean and better one.

Enjoy Rotaract and love humanity!

The boat is for the benefits of the school children to transport them across the river to go to their schools. The local farmers, mainly women, also uses it to bring them to the farm and also to transport their harvest to the local market. Before this, the school children had to pay for their transport, while the farmers had to borrow or hire a boat for their transportation needs. The boat can carry 10 school children each trip.

OUTSTANDING SHOWING BY 9 ROTARY CLUBS Mary Chin

KOTA KINABALU: Outgoing Rotary International (RI) District 3310 Governor (DG), Philip Chong is proud of the performance of the nine Rotary Clubs in carrying out laudable community service projects during his Rotary Year 2015-2016.

He said, notably, almost all have contributed in one way or another towards alleviating the plight of the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit and surrounding areas on last year.

According to him, the clubs had also pooled their resources to make the ‘Stop Hunger Now’ project a roaring success.

“Even a relatively young club like the RC of KK Pearl had made a donation of RM3000 to the quake victims, and contributed 88 boxes to various villages and homes under the Stop Hunger Now project,” Philip noted.

Less than a year old RC of KK Mandarin had also donated vegetable seedlings and fertilisers worth RM2,000 to the Ranau community. Its President George Lim said plans were afoot to provide for sustainable farming in rural areas on the west coast and in the interior in support of potential and existing entrepreneurs. “A sustainable community is critical for sustainable business. We are helping entrepreneurs across the chain from producers, suppliers to distributors, retailers and recyclers,” he added.

Delivering her report, Acting President of RC of KK Pearl Datuk Suzannah Liaw said other community services included a donation to fire victims in Kudat, supply of bakery equipment to Taman Sri Puteri, , initiating a training programme to provide baking skills to the young

girls, as well as ang pows, food, books, towels and clothing for 61 kids at Rumah Kanak-Kanak Toboh, Tambunan.

“In addition, we have an ongoing deworming medication programme for 80 children from the Rainbow School of Hope and 300 others from the Hope Learning Centre, Donggongon,” she added. The club’s proposed water project is targeted at Kg Mononood, a remote village in an oil-palm plantation in Paitan, Sandakan, involving 82 families

The report card delivered by Jack Ong, the President of RC of Kota Kinabalu, indicated that the club had initiated a Bird Guide Training course for Mt Kinabalu Guides to assist those whose incomes have been affected by the natural disaster.

“Given the rich biodiversity of Mt Kinabalu National Park and the influx of foreign tourists, there is a growing demand for well-trained bird guides,” said Ong who thanked the DG, Assistant Governor Iskandar Ahmad, past Assistant Governor, K.P. Lu and past President of RC of KK South, Lee Swi Heng for having obtained the funding for the course from Sunway Corp.

Another major project was to deliver $100,000 worth of school supplies to 1000 rural students in the Sapulut, Melalap area while a Rotary Community Corp was started to introduce villagers to modern vegetable farming techniques. “We also spread New Year Cheer by handing out $10,000 worth of foodstuff to Wallace Centre for the Blind, Seri Mengasih Centre, Bukit Harapan Home, Tolumis Care Centre and Cheshire Home,” Ong said.

Interestingly, the RC of Likas Bay, headed by Ir. Dato’ John Chee, came up with the innovative idea of a community service outreach project dubbed Sabah Biz Grant 2015 in aid of entrepreneurs. The club offered a microgrant of RM5,000 each to three winning entrepreneurs in a contest for having the best ideas as business start-ups. “We are also looking into the possibility of starting a Micro Credit Scheme along the same lines which is to help locals kickstart their business proposition with a revolving credit scheme so that the repayments may go towards assisting other deserving applicants,” he said.

Apart from aid from quake victims and rice supplies for needy families in Kudat and Tenom (Stop Hunger NOW project), the club had implemented the Avoidable Blindness Outreach Project (ABO) as a joint club and District 3310 project, a literacy project in Penampang and a rainwater harvesting project in Kota Marudu.

“To date, nine children with cleft lip have been operated on locally to give them a new lease on life while our overseas cleft lip project had brought smiles to 34 patients in rural Cambodia in collaboration with our sister club (RC of Lu Chou, Taiwan) and Smile Cambodia,” Chee related.

For the Panggilan Kinabalu Concert, a joint fund-raising endeavour between RC Bukit Bintang and RC Bandar Utama in KL, in aid of the earthquake victims, the RC of KK South was selected as a partner in service to provide logistics.

“This was to facilitate the trips to Ranau made by visiting Rotarians from the Peninsula. We also provided transport when they were here to make the final distribution of funds to the

beneficiaries,” said the President of RC of KK South, Leslie Yap.

The club’s other community service projects included the award-winning Kg. Sinompuru Water Sanitation Project (Menggatal), Kota Belud Water Mitigation Project benefiting eight villages, Medical Outreach at Kg Karagasan (Ranau) and Girls’ Hostel Project at Kg. Bantayan (Tamparuli, Tuaran).

Two major projects undertaken by the RC of Luyang under the leadership of Kenneth Tan were the award-winning Communities Mitigation Scheme for Kota Belud Water Supply Crisis (in the aftermath of the June 5, 2015 Sabah Earthquake), which brought relief to over 1,000 families with 5,000 people in 21 villages in the , and the Origin Point Therapy (OPT) Seminar that attracted more than 300 participants.

“Currently, we are in the process of applying for a Rotary International (RI) Global Grant for Phase II of OPT : Health Beyond Medication. This will be our signature project,” he said.

The RC of Tanjung Aru takes pride in its Kg Natai Water Project, a Rotary International (RI) Global Grant Project that benefits 643 people in 80 households at Kg. Natai Baru, Kg Natai Lama, Kg. Natai Siba and Kg. Natai Nulu on the west coast of Sabah. It costs USD40,000 for materials, inclusive of the filtration system, according to Club President Dato’ Stanley Tee. “Among the sponsors are sister clubs (RC of Garden City, Singapore) and RC of Hsinchu East (Taiwan) and our international partner, RC of Taipei Tszan (Taiwan),” he said.

President of the RC of Kinabalu Sutera, Edgar Pong disclosed that the club had raised a substantial amount of money (in collaboration with RC Bukit Kiara Sunrise, KL) from a fund-raising dinner for SK Tumunda Salimandut, a primary school in Kota Marudu, and some charitable organisations. He gave credit to the Organising Chairperson Fatimah Yassin and President-Elect Datin Betty Hiew for the success of the event.

To reward the pupils of SK Buayan, which emerged as one of the top three best primary schools in the (despite its remoteness and near inaccessibility during the rainy season), the RC of Penampang, led by Dominic Lansing, held a charity Christmas Party for the children, parents and teachers. “We served them a hearty Christmas feast, fun games, Christmas carols and gifts, as well as made donations,” he said.
