Every Wednesday night from 11pm - 1am you can hear the numerous and enchanting rhythms of Brazil. Brazil is a large country, roughly the size of the United States and there is no shortage of musical styles, from and bossa nova to MPB. In addition to playing music, Som do Brasil connects with the community.

Brazilian event announcements for the New York City area give the community a chance to experience Brazilian culture first hand. In addition, Som do Brasil promotes local musicians and artists to help them gain further exposure.

Some recent guests include local artists Ze Luis, Vanessa Falabella, and the Brazuca Band and world famous Sergio Mendez, Simone, and Jair Rodriguez. Som do Brasil was started in September of 1997 by Eduardo Delgado, reviving a Street Samba show held in previous years.

One of the most loved aspects of the show is the Antonio Carlos Jobim Birthday Broadcast every January. Som do Brasil is currently hosted by Jassvan de Lima.

1922—Year of Brazil’s Independence Centenary, HISTORY

The week of modern art was an exhibition organized by avant-garde artists that happened in the city of São Paulo and influenced in the formation of a new concept of Brazilian art and consequently in the teaching of arts in the schools. Between 1900 and 1929, Europe went through a period of cultural effervescence, with artistic manifestations that broke traditional concepts such as German expressionism, Cub- ism, abstract painting, Dadaism and surrealism. Many Brazilian paint- ers traveled in order to know new forms of expression and, upon re- turning to Brazil, brought these new aesthetic conceptions. The fuse for the explosion of modernism was the return of Anita Malfatti from the United States after studying painting. Upon her return, per- suaded by the insistence of friends, she put on an exhibition that was heavily criticized by respected art critics, among them Monteiro Lobato of the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. The article caused much controversy, which led to the consolidation of a group of individuals interested in producing innovative art. In the article called "Paranoia or Mystification", Lobato is relentless. The following is an excerpt:

There are two kinds of artists. A composite of those who normally see things and consequently make pure art, guarding the eternal rhythms of life, and adopted for the realization of the aesthetic emotions, the classic processes of the great masters. ... The other species is formed by those who abnormally see nature and interpret it in the light of ephemeral theories, under the hint of rebellious schools, arising here and there like boils of excessive culture. (...) Shooting stars, shine for an instant, most often in the light of scandal, and soon fall into the darkness of oblivion. (...)

These considerations are brought about by Mrs. Malfatti's exposition, where there are marked trends for a forced aesthetic attitude towards the extravagances of Picasso and company. This artist has a vigorous talent, out of the ordinary. A few times, through a twisted work for misdirection, one notices so many and so precious latent qualities. (...) However, seduced by the theories of what she calls modern art, ... she puts all her talent at the service of a new kind of caricature. (...) As a Di Cavalcanti result, from February 13 to 17, 1922, the Week of Modern Art was held at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo, in which artists defended The emphasis of the week was modernism – lectures about modern freedom and the incorporation of the modern forms of expression of art were given, new styles of music were played and difficult poems the "foreigner" - not for Copy them, but to re-create them in their were read aloud. RISING TALENT DANCE The Tap dance over Brazilian Music

elipe Galganni, tap dancer, teacher, and chore- ographer, is known for his unique style and ver- Fsatility in blending the American art form of tap dance with his Brazilian roots. Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Fe- lipe began his dance training in 1996 at the age of 9. He started out taking a jazz dance classes after school, but at age 15, Felipe discovered tap and he hasn’t stopped tap- ping since . Within a year of his first encounter with tap, Felipe began teaching the dance. It was during this time that Felipe performed as a soloist and ensemble member in his first musical, the Maya-directed show, entitled “O Musi- cal dos Musicais” (The Musical of the Musicals). Felipe reu- nited with Maya in 2007, when he acted in and choreo- graphed the musical: “Garota Glamour” (Glamour Girl). Felipe’s affair with musical theater continued in 2009, when he was commissioned by writer/director Hudson Gauber to choreograph and perform several tap numbers for the São Paulo premiere of the musical “Rock Show” in Brazil, Felipe continued to explore tap dance, performance and choreog- raphy, as he honed his teaching skills. In 2010, Felipe participated in a weeklong intensive in Rio taught by Heather Cornell (Manhattan Tap), and was ex- posed for the first time, to the idea of using tap as an in- strument, and looking at the dance as music. It’s an ap- proach that takes into account the tonality of every sound, of every dancer, each as a member of the band or orchestra completing the composition. This experience solidified Fe- lipe’s decision to pursue tap dance as a profession.

That summer Felipe moved to New York City to further his tap education. He continued his studies with Ms. Cor- nell, a teacher he still counts as one of his mentors, and was soon introduced to his now long-time collaborator and friend Chikako Iwahori. It was through Ms. Iwahori, that he met the various teachers, choreographers and dancers within the New York tap community. Since making the move to New York Felipe has had the honor of dancing, studying and performing with such great names as Tony Waag, Max Pollak (RumbaTap), Lynn Schwab and Ray Hes- selink, in addition to Ms. Cornell and Ms. Iwahori. 2nd International Choro Festival 2016—NYC—Tap dance over Choro Music

July 14th 1945 the Brazilian Academy of Music is founded by Heit- or Villa-Lobos. The non-profit honor society was composed of for- ty scholars with outstanding achievements in music composition, interpretation, and musicology. This year marks the 72nd anniversary of ABM.

July 1968 - Tropicalia ou Panis et Circencis is released by , Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Nara Leão, Os Mutantes, and Tom Ze. The album formed the basis for the musical component of the Tropicalia movement, in which Brazilian vanguard artists incorporated foreign styles and ideas into Brazilian culture. This period gave birth to some of the most innovative Brazilian artists, musicians, philosophers, and writers of the 20th century.

July 7th 1990 - , frontman and songwriter of Rock band Barao Vermelho, and one of the most controversial and acclaimed figures of Brazilian music dies.
