Pentecost May 27, 2018 FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Are you filled with the Holy Spirit? The filling of the Holy Spirit is the chassis - the drive train - of our Christian experience. Let’s pray:

“O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things. Treasury of blessings and giver of life, come and abide in us; and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.”

This prayer is one of our daily prayers and one which we sing at the beginning of classes, meet- ings, and other endeavors. It was one of Father Basil’s favorite prayers and he talked for hours on the meaning of each phrase. He found it comforting in his last days.

What should we know about this prayer?

It was composed by the Fathers of the Church during the first centuries of the Church — as early as the third or fourth century. The Holy Spirit who descended upon the apostles is truly the fulfill- ment, the very crowning of the life of Jesus upon the earth. Now God dwells within the entire uni- verse, for “the spirit of truth is everywhere present and fills all things.” Jesus promised us this when He spoke to the apostles in the upper room as related in John 16:7-17: “It is better for you that I depart; for if I do not leave you the Comforter will not come unto you (and it is he who) will lead you into all truth.”

The life of the Church surged forth from the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles at Pente- cost. The Holy Spirit is the life of the Church, in Him the presence of God continues upon earth un- til the second and final coming of our Lord. Our life within the Church is a continual outreach to- wards the Kingdom which is to come.

We can only draw near to the mystery of God in Trinity through the action of the Holy Spirit within us. No prayer can have life or meaning within us without the power of the Holy Spirit. That is why we ceaselessly invoke Him to “come and abide in us.” Then we can answer: “I am filled with the Holy Spirit,” when asked.

Feast of Holy Glorious Great-Martyr and Wonderworker, George the Victorious

George, this truly great and glorious Martyr of Christ, was born of a father from Cappadocia and a mother from Palestine. Being a military tribune, or chiliarch (that is, a commander of a thousand troops), he was illustrious in battle and highly honored for his cour- age. When he learned that the Emperor Diocletian was preparing a persecution of the Christians, George presented himself publicly before the Emperor and denounced him. When threats and promises could not move him from his steadfast confession, he was put to unheard-of tortures, which he endured with great bravery, overcoming them by his faith and love towards Christ. By the wondrous signs that took place in his contest, he guided many to the knowledge of the truth, including Queen Alexandra, wife of Diocletian, and was finally beheaded in 296 in Nicomedia. (Great Horologion).

The Empress Alexandra, along with a pagan priest who confessed Christ due to George’s witness, were executed together with the Great Martyr. St. Alexandra is commemorated on April 21.

Modern Orthodox : Volume 7, St. Nectarios of by Constantine Cavarnos Reviewed by Ann Chrissos

Constantine Cavarnos published the first book in English about Saint Nectarios. It is entitled Modern Orthodox Saints: Volume 7, St. Nectarios of Aegina. This book differs from Greek books about the saint, because Cavarnos not only provides a biography and anecdotes of the saint’s miracles, but also lists the titles of all of his written works along with some excerpts. St. Nectarios published more than thirty books, as well as, many pamphlets and articles. The purpose of his prolific writing was to strengthen the faith of Orthodox Christians. St. Nectarios was born in Thrace in 1846. At the age of fourteen, he traveled to Constantinople to work and to study the Church Fathers. In 1877, he was ordained a and went to to continue his formal educa- tion. He was ordained Presbyter in 1886 and assigned to St. Nicholas Church in , . Three years later, he was ordained Metropolitan of Pentapolis. He was appointed director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in 1894, where he spent the next fifteen years preaching, teaching and directing. He founded the Holy Trinity Con- vent in Aegina and served as its director from December 1908 until his death in November of 1920. Nectarios was officially recognized as a saint on April 20, 1961 for his great faith, humility and miracles. Over two thousand mira- cles, mostly healings, have been attributed to him. Readers of this book will enrich their knowledge of Orthodox Christianity and their spiritual life through the words and examples of St. Nectarios.

Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) Corner: "The Orthodox Mission Team of St. Louis works to nurture an awareness within our local churches of the need to evangelize, catechize, and support missionary efforts and programs globally."

Serving in Multi-Country Program Personnel The Colburn Family

Michael and Lisa Colburn specialize in linguistics and translation. Michael served as a missionary with the Wyc- liffe Bible Translators for 13 years, and lived 8 years with the Ogea tribe in Papua New Guinea. When he went there in 1977, the Ogea were an “unreached” people group. His primary assignment was to establish a project to translate the New Testament into Ogea. This required his learning Ogea without the benefit of a written grammar or dictionary. He devised an alphabet for the Ogea language and taught people to read and write using the new al- phabet. He trained Ogea speakers as “mother-tongue” translators and provided consultation and review of their translation throughout the process. As a lay person, he worked to evangelize the Ogea people, praying that not only would many Ogea become Christian, but they in turn would become missionaries. This prayer was answered, and the Ogea planted churches in a number of surrounding tribes. During this time, he also served for a period as the director of Wycliffe’s work in the Madang province of Papua New Guinea, supervising over 20 translation teams, and was a member of the executive committee, which oversees the work throughout Papua New Guinea. After returning to the US, Michael worked 24 years as a full-time software developer for the US Government. For the last 7 years of this time, he established and managed a software development division within the U.S. gov- ernment. He has a certification in project management from the Project Management Institute, a certification in multi-million dollar program management by the Federal Acquisition Institute, and led numerous initiatives from initial vision through to implementation. Michael's academic qualifications include a BA in Biblical Studies, MA in Linguistics, MCIS in Software Engi- neering, and a Doctor of Computer Science degree. He has developed courses and taught both within industry and at the college level. He and his wife, Lisa, now work full-time with the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) as mission spe- cialists in linguistics and translation. Their vision is that every Orthodox Christian parish in the world will have the opportunity to worship God using the mother-tongue of its parishioners. Their mission is to equip translators of the Orthodox liturgical texts with the knowledge and tools they need to produce accurate and understandable transla- tions that speak to the hearts of those who pray, hear, or read them. To that end, Michael has laid out a multi-year plan to develop and provide four types of assistance to OCMC missionaries, liturgical translators, and publishers of translations: software, courses, handbooks, and consulting. Working with Fr Seraphim Dedes (creator of eMatins.org), Michael developed AGES Liturgical Workbench (ALWB). This software has tools for translators, a multi-lingual library, typikon templates, and a rubrics engine. The rubrics engine calculates the liturgical properties for a given date (e.g. the tone of the week, what day of Lent it is, what feast day it is, etc.), in order to generate services for specific dates, automatically determining and inserting the variable hymns. He is working on a web-based Translation Management System (TMS) to provide tools for translators as they create their translations, and to enter them into a database that can be used by ALWB to gener- ate services and/or books. In addition to software, Michael has been working on a liturgical translator's handbook for the Hymns of The- ophany. The handbook is being written using a form of English that should be more easily understood by people who have learned English as a foreign language. The handbook provides a grammatical analysis of the Greek text, model translations, and commentary that explains the meaning of the text, identifies potential translation problems, and provides suggestions on how these problems can be solved. The Colburn's lived two years in Thessaloniki, to do research and language study for the handbook. The Colburns are currently based in St. Augustine, Florida, and from there travel to Kenya and other countries to train people in the use of the AGES Software.

------As always, please feel free to contact Rosie Hartley, 618-447-9688, if you have any questions, would like to be part of the Mission Team St. Louis, or if you would like to help our missionaries. Thank you for your continued support!

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Monthly Bulletin May 2018 Sunday School With Easter behind us, we have our last few weeks of Sunday school to look forward to. On May 6th, we’ll honor our devoted Sunday school teachers who will be treated to a delicious meal at our annual Teacher’s Appreciation Luncheon. We welcome volun- teers or a donation to assist with the luncheon. The Teacher’s Appreciation Day gives us the opportunity to thank our beloved St. Nicholas Sunday School staff for their ongoing commitment and devotion to our children and our parish. Please ask your child to remember their teacher as the school year comes to an end with by writing a thank you note. May 20th is our last day of Sunday school for this school year. Just before Holy Communion, we’ll honor our Sunday school students with excellent attendance as well as our fourth graders who will receive their bibles. Students will then report for their last day of Sun- day school following Holy Communion. Afterwards, there will be a very special End of Sunday School Picnic at the Family Life Cen- ter. If you were not in attendance at last year’s picnic, you’re in for a treat. It’s really quite the event that you don’t want to miss and it’s the parish’s way of sending off the kids (and families) for the summer with some very special memories of an event that let’s our students know they’re special and and loved and appreciated. Although donations of any kind to church are always welcome, this event is free. Fr. Doug, Fr. Michael and our Parish Council really want this to be a special tradition. This will be Tom and Daphne Whaley and their daughter Sarah’s third year chairing this event land we’re so lucky they’re doing it again this year. It’s part picnic, part carnival with great food and treats, a petting zoo and pony rides, jumping house, big slide, popcorn, candy, piñata, games and lots of fun. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes so you can enjoy this. Bring the whole family (Yiayia & Papou too!). But an event of this caliber requires help so we kindly ask that you volunteer a couple hours either setting up on Saturday evening or Sunday morn- ing or assisting at the event or cleaning up afterwards. Please contact me at [email protected] to sign up to help or here’s a SignUp Genius link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f48a9a82ba7fc1-stnicholas

Then after taking a few weeks of R&R from Sunday school, we’ll be gearing up for Summer Sunday School which is targeted for children pre-K through grade 5. Children MUST HAVE ALREADY BEEN THROUGH PRE-K this year to attend this summer. There is only one caveat for Summer Sunday School to happen: we’’ll need volunteers since our regular Sunday School staff teak a break in the summer. This a great opportunity for parishioners who’ve always wanted to teach Sunday school but couldn’t make that kind of time commitment all year long. So if you have one or two or all five consecutive Sundays to teach or assist, PLEASE CONTACT ME. Even if you never wanted to teach but feel obligated to help out, that’s good enough. A little healthy guilt trip can be a good thing. These kids are fun and it’s only one hour a week and a little preparation time up front. The dates for this summer are all the Sundays in July. We also welcome our middle and high school students help (plus they get service hours). Finally, please find the Sunday School Registration in this newsletter and take the time to fill it out NOW and give it to me or mail it to the office with your registration fee.

Despina and I wish you a happy and restful summer and look forward to seeing you in church. Your Co-Sunday School Directors Bess Fitzmaurice and Despina Hartley

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Monthly Bulletin May 2018 THE NEXT 100 THE NEXT 100 is an initiative to lead us into the next generation of St. Nicholas. Our objectives are to sustain and grow our programs, expand our ministries, enhance the communications with our parishioners, increase the utilization of our physical facilities, make capital improvements, continue to reduce our debt, and create an endowment that will serve as a long-term investment of the church. Our goal is to raise $1.5 million for this project.

UPDATE We currently stand at $900,000 in contributions and pledges - almost 2/3 of the way there!

“DOUBLE MY DONATION” – ROUND 2 Because our first “Double my Donation” offer was such a success, a generous group of donors has offered to match up to $250,000 of all new contributions and pledges made through Memorial Day (May 28th)! This is a great opportunity for all those who have considered participating to make their commitment.

DONOR RECOGNITION Plans are underway to establish a new Donor Wall in our beautiful Family Life Center - to recognize all donors and those who they wish to honor. The Donor Wall will be unveiled at a special event at the FLC on Saturday, December 8th. As in the last campaign, those who contribute $50,000 or more will be honored with a special individual plaque.

HOW TO MAKE A DONATION All donors must complete a donor card, which can be found on the St. Nicholas website, or in the church hall after ser- vices each Sunday.

QUESTIONS? You will be able to find more details on the St. Nicholas website. If you have questions, feel free to contact Fr. Doug, Fr. Michael, Dan Tarlas (314-713-5500), or Chris Anastas (314-647-4636).

YOUNG YEARS SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL July 1st, July 8th, July 15th, July 22nd, 29th

Children who have completed 1st year of Sunday school up through 5th grade are welcome.

Get ready to have fun! This summer’s theme is Pioneers of Christianity. Each Sun- day we’ll focus on a Sunday School lesson, a pioneer activity, game or song and then share a snack. We will also have a patriotic theme on July 1st. We will separate the younger children from the older kiddos to keep lessons age appropriate.

Class will begin just after Holy Communion and conclude 1 hour later (usually around 11:30). Classes will be on 1st floor next to Director’s office.

The fee for this is $10 per child or $15 per family for all 5 classes payable to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and noted for “Summer Sunday School”. You may pay this on the first day of Summer Sunday School. ADDITION- AL DONATIONS ALWAYS WELCOME.

We also welcome VOLUNTEERS to assist or teach. You can help all 5 Sundays or choose one or two. You can help by being a lead teacher, an assistant (helping kiddos with crafts, setting up materials, cleaning up) or just help by bringing in a healthy nut free snack.

Please contact Bess Fitzmaurice to register your child or children OR if you wish to volunteer at besscater- [email protected] or 314-602-5406. You do not need to send money in advance, just pay when you come to your first class BUT DO LET ME KNOW YOU PLAN TO BRING YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN.

Centennial Video Available

It is the product of countless hours of research and is a collaboration of three talented members of our parish: Dr. Michael Tsichlis, who provided the written and photographic history, Debbie Dugan, who wrote the script, and Rip Kastaris, who developed the story of our parish in a 17-minute video production with Fr. Doug narrat- ing. You will want this as a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

Buy several to make sure that your children have a copy or that former parishioners who have moved from St. Louis can treasure their heritage.
