It’s once again time to bring our community together for an unforgettable weekend of exploration and celebration at what we hope will be our most incredible DO event ever. First a quick note about our host hotel: It’s not easy to find welcoming spaces for an event like ours, even in San Francisco, and we need to be on our best behavior this weekend. That means KEEP THE PLAY IN THE (AWESOME) PLAYSPACES OR YOUR HOTEL ROOM. There is NO NUDITY OR PLAY in the hotel lobby, bar, restaurant, elevators, hallways, vending area, or any other nominally “public” space. Also: we do NOT flirt, tease, pick-up, flash, or otherwise include the hotel staff in our reindeer games. Surrender is an “adult” event, so we are counting on you to act like adults. You are also duly deputized to police each other and politely remind your fellow attendees to “take it downstairs” if you see someone acting inappropriately. With that out of the way, prepare to immerse yourself in an erotic and exotic world of sensuality, passion, and excitement. We’ve got a week - end packed with fun special events, performances, and contests. All the times and places are listed on the schedules in your packets. Check the easels in the lower lobby for any last minute changes. DO: Surrender features more than fifty educators and performers drawn from across the country and right here in San Francisco. Your days will be packed with workshops on the broadest mix of erotic and kinky topics. Each evening we first entertain you and then let you loose in our 20,000 sq ft of dungeon and Sex-O-Rama playspaces where you are free to explore your “dark” desires. The 7th Floor is home to Vendor Row and our hospitality suite where you can pick up something stunning to wear or evil to play with, or just hang out in the the con suite. We do things a bit differently here at DO, so if you’re new to our events, we STRONGLY encourage you to check out one of the DO Orientation workshops on Friday or Saturday. It’s funny, has great information, only lasts 45 minutes, and there are prizes! At Dark Odyssey, we strive to break down barriers and transcend labels in order to build a broader community that includes kinksters, leatherpeople, swingers, Pagans, sex-workers, Tantra practitioners, pansexuals, queer, genderqueer, and straight people. You’re guaranteed to run into people whose experiences of sex, kink, gender, and sexuality are very different from your own. We ask that you check your assumptions and judgments at the door, and learn about and embrace these differences. We all share a driving need to be here in a safe and inclusive place where we can explore the wonderfully bizarre things that make us unique.     “Like a porn movie” Notes on boundaries and bodies that matter in male sex clubs Camilo Braz Abstract This article is based on ethnographic research carried out in male sex clubs in São Paulo between 2006 and 2008. Drawing on interviews conducted with club-goers and club owners, it discusses the recent segmentation of the sexu- al leisure market for men in the city, and the processes by which stereotypes and characteristics associated with virility are valued and performed. The possible effects of these processes on subjectivity constitution are also in- vestigated. In sex clubs, sexual practices considered borderline, such as fist- fucking and other practices associated with BDSM, are material for specific and refined learning. The data gathered from interviews show that condom use and drug and alcohol consumption are subject to a sort of surveillance and control, especially when it comes to their questions of ‘excess’. This con- trol provides sex clubs with a sense of legitimacy, making them part of a via- ble erotic market. The intention here is to demonstrate the analytical interest of this control in the context of the construction of subjects and bodies that matter in these venues. Like practices which evoke control or loss thereof, bodies and clubs need to have their excesses checked so that they are intelli- gible and desirable. Might this uncomfortable place 139 where our fantasies and our politics seem to collide also be a productive one, precisely because it is uncomfortable. This is the question I would like to explore here. I write as a queer, kinky, feminist activist from within the women’s movement in India. It is perhaps because of this location that I feel I am able to be part of the tradition of women’s movement, at least here in India, and to be self-critical, often to the point of being overly critical of ourselves. The way I am using the word fantasy is in terms of an expression or enactment of desire. And while we are all familiar with the concept of desire in its most overt form of sexual fantasies or imagined sexual scenarios, I believe that desire, and by implication, fantasy, also underpin our relation to reality in virtually every other domain of life – from relationships to career choices, from ideology to politics. I would like to begin with sexual fantasies and later move to fantasy as a dimension of other aspects of life. A feminist friend whom I interviewed for a piece I was writing on porn told me about her porn-watching experience one night. The porn that she found herself looking for was very specific. It was about incest involving daughter and parents.

Beginning our journey in exploring the gender spectrum, Maverick introduced us to some of their friends who showed us unequivocally that one’s parts do not always define one’s gender and that assumptions based on appearances can be way off base. Lee Harrington’s thought provoking exploration of Intentional Relationship Design was interwoven with his signature melange of spiritual appreciation and pragmatic application. Throughout the day, classes alternated with pre-recorded videos to keep the educational opportunities going. Butterscotch’s enthusiasm for tea service shined brightly as she walked us through her take on tea. Ursus’ demonstration of a bar shine gave us a glimpse into the world of the bootblacking, offering something for those interested in being a bootblack, as well as those who seek out their service. Fred illuminated the world of cigars and cigar service for attendees, information that was later put to good use at the post-event hybrid virtual and in-person Beyond Vanilla After Dark.
