Your efforts are greatly appreciated. 3 Abstract The Egyptian Uprisings of 2011 was established as a vastly innovative media event that conjured the nostalgia of a global audience. This study discovered social media’s role and its initial impact depicted over the course of the insurrection in the country. When the Internet was first introduced in Egypt in the early 2000’s it was distinguished as a marginal leisure activity for the elite members of society. However, as time progressed and the Internet became accessible to everyone it fostered an instrument for various groups to call for alterations in their communities. Twitter and Facebook served as a fundamental communication device for protestors and groups who filtered their message of change of leadership amongst the youth demographic. Specifically, in Cairo, Egypt social media was a primary instrument utilized by a number of online communities, such as the April 6 Youth Movement and The We are All Khaleed Saaed groups. Both groups utilized Facebook and Twitter to inform demonstrators of the march on Tahrir Square on January 25th. This event witnessed a vast number of Egyptian activists and residents who gathered calling for the immediate dismissal of President Mubarak.

    Contentious history in ‘Egyptian’ television: The case of Malek Farouq Tarik Ahmed Elseewi, Whitman College Abstract: This article asks what happens when the construction of national identity escapes national boundaries. Using an example from an Egyptian-Ar- abic televisual production, Malek Farouq, a biopic soap opera that narrates the life of the much reviled last king of Egypt, this article argues that changes in the production, distribution and consumption of media in the Arabic-speaking Mid- dle East are contributing to a restructuring of various forms of cultural identity. The move from a nationally-centred regime of broadcasting, with its official regimes of truth, to a regional and transnational flow of television in multiple languages from multiple subjectivities is transforming ideas of communal iden- tity. The principal argument of this article is that economic and technological changes in Arabic media production are inseparable from and have led to and stemmed from significant political and social transformations in contemporary Arab life. In the second episode of the Arabic language serial Malek Farouq (Ali, 2007) the title character, Prince Farouq of Egypt, cries himself to sleep. The sobbing ten-year old finds himself trapped and friendless within the lavishly appointed confines of his 1930s palace bedroom, after his father, the authoritarian King Fuad, becomes enraged with him for consorting with the commoners of the pal- ace staff. As the screen fades to black, it is the first time since 1952 in Egyptian- oriented popular media that the historical Farouq (1920-1965) has been depicted in anything other than a profoundly negative light.

    RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF ARABIC Post Graduate Curriculum and Syllabus M.A ARABIC: LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE For 2019 Admission Onwards 1 PREFACE Modern educationists and experts in pedagogical sciences unanimously stress that the language is not a knowledge to be learned, but a skill to be earned. But still the foreign and second language (FL/SL) education in India continues to employ the traditional chalk- and-talk method. One of the main reasons for this condition is that the policy makers and controlling bodies of higher education have not yet recognized the salient features of FL/SL education. They treat the FL/SL subjects like those other subjects which are content based and knowledge oriented. As a result, graduates in SL/FL are generally criticized for their inability to use the respective languages as a tool for every day communication. With the limited freedom that we enjoyed as an autonomous college, we have dared to take a giant stride in the way of addressing this criticism by introducing lab hours in developing LSRW skills and making it a compulsory part of the academic works and making it as important as it is prescribed in science subjects. I think this is the factor that is going to be the unique identification (UID) mark of the curriculum of U.G & P.G courses now at your hands. At the same time, traditional subjects can not be omitted from the curriculum all at once for two reasons: 1) It may attract criticism from many corners. 2) It may affect the career prospects of the students adversely since the syllabus of competitive examinations continue to be knowledge-oriented.
