We visited the exhibition with my mother, Celia Mackintosh of Mackintosh, my sister, Bridget Dickson and her son, my nephew, Calum so it was quite a family gathering!

As I write this, the Scottish news has just reported on the anniversary of the war poet Ewart Alan Mackintosh who died on 21 November 1917 at the Battle of Cambrai. Neil McLennan, lecturer at University of , is hoping the publish the poems. Neil is the great grandson of Roderick McLennan, who was standing next to Mackintosh as he died in no-man’s land, from University of Aberdeen is hoping to publish his poems. Born in Brighton and studied at University of Oxford, Mackintosh’s parents had roots in Alness in Ross- shire. Mackintosh, a lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders, and received the Military Cross on 24 June 1916, was only 24 when he was killed but regarded himself as father to the men in his platoon, as described in his poem In Memoriam:

What a day yesterday! The weather was beautiful, Clan Mackintosh made connections with some of the local Clan chapters (one of them took pity on my sparse tent and loaned me some items they weren’t using) and made new friends that have Mackintosh roots. I took lots of notes on what I would need for the next festival that Clan Mackintosh will be at in Dothan, AL. I’ll post more about that event later this week. 4 A PUBLICATION OF CLAN MACKINTOSH OF NORTH AMERICA MARCH 2018

BATTLE OF PALM SUNDAY BATTLE OF CRAIG CAILLOCH 1429 1441

The Clan Chattan attacked the Clan Cameron when Clan Mackintosh, at the instigation of Alexander, Lord assembled in a church, to which they set fire "and of the Isles, began to invade and harry the Cameron nearly destroyed the whole clan." This conflict on lands. A sanguinary conflict took place in this year at Palm Sunday, 1429 was probably between those Craig Cailloch between Clan Cameron and the members of Clan Cameron and Clan Chattan which Mackintoshes, in which Mackintosh's second son, separated from the , or perhaps just a Lachlan "Badenoch" was wounded, and Gillichallum, portion of the clan as a whole. Another account states his brother, killed. This was soon after followed by that an engagement was fought on this day also, in additional Mackintosh raids, in which Cameron lands which most of the Mackintoshes and almost the whole were harried. It is said by Mackintosh historians that tribe of Camerons were "cut to pieces." Donald Dubh once more fled to Ireland at this point, This feud between the two clans seems to date back although this is not recorded in Cameron history. to 1336, when the rights to the lands of Glenlui and Locharkaig, in , were contested. Some RAID ON ROSS authorities believe that these disputed lands at one 1491 time made up the official demesne of the "Old Toisech," or head of the tribe which controlled early Lochaber Ewan Cameron, XIII Captain and Chief of Clan Cameron, along with a sizable body of Cameron men, joined Alexander of , Clan Ranald of BATTLE OF INVERLOCHY Garmoran and Lochaber, and Clan Chattan, on the 1431 famous raid to the county of Ross (clashing with the Mackenzies of Kintail), which ended in the forfeiture of Forces led by Donald Balloch, cousin of Alexander, the Earldom of Ross and the Lordship of the Isles. Donald Balloch then turned his attention toward Clan Cameron and Clan BATTLE OF GLEN LIVET Chattan, ravaging their country, putting it to fire and 1594 sword. Soon King James led an army into the Highlands, and the rebel forces disintegrated. Six years later King James I was murdered, after which Allan Cameron, XVI Captain and Chief of Clan Alexander, Lord of the Isles was "liberated" from his Cameron, fought with Huntly "and his adherents" at imprisonment. the in 1594 (Allan had previously entered into an indenture with Huntly, indicating that he would assist him against all his enemies, especially the Mackintoshes and Grants). At the head of the Cameron men, Allan performed what is referred to as a "singular service" against his old enemies, the Mackintoshes, whom "he defeated, and pursued with great eagerness, and did Huntly such services as merited a different reward" from that which he afterwards received. The confederation of Argyll, Atholl, the Forbes and the Macintoshes was soundly defeated.

The naming of SNPs has accelerated at a tremendous rate over recent years as a full analysis of the y chromosome has become possible. For the R1b haplogroup, R-M269 is given as the default terminal SNP where a test has not been carried out but R-M269 is high in the y SNP tree. If an SNP has been tested it is shown in green text.

A full analysis of a person's yDNA is likely to involve some STR and some SNP testing. Estimates of the age of formation of SNPs is becoming available through advanced testing. The ultimate yDNA test with FTDNA is the BigY. FTDNA describes the BigY test in these words, "The Big Y product is a Y-chromosome direct paternal lineage test. We have designed it to explore deep ancestral links on our common paternal tree. Big Y tests thousands of known branch markers as well as millions of places where there may be new branch markers. It is intended for expert users with an interest in advancing science.
