ELGINs PRINTED BY ALEX. RUSSELL, AND SOLD BY ALL BOOKSELLERS. Price 2s. 6d. Bound in Cloth. PREFACE. In the publication of the Morayshire Register and Elgin AND Forres Directory, I would respectfully solicit the in- dulgence of the Public in any omissions which, notwithstanding the greatest care, may have inadvertently occurred inafirst num- ber. I trust that, whatever may be its faults, I have succeeded in bringing before the public much useful and interesting infor- mation regarding the institutions of the county and burghs, and, in particular, in giving a distinct and concise account of the various charitable mortifications vested in the Kirk-session of Elgin, and Magistrates and other public bodies of Elgin and Forres. The streets and courts of the towns, in several instances, not being properly named, and the houses not numbered, ren- der the Directory not so complete as it , would otherwise have been ; but I trust that this deficiency will be supplied before another season. I would, in conclusion, take this opportunity of tendering my warmest thanks to the public officers of the county and burghs for the ready access to the records they on all occasions afforded me, and to the public generally for the large measure of support which has already been bestowed on my humble exertions. • Historic Series
The First 43 British General Elections, 1832-2001 This data set was put together over the course of a decade with the help of Bruce Tether and James Cornford (at Newcastle) Kevin Holohan, David Cutts, and Ron Johnston (At Bristol), Heather Eyre (at Leeds), John Pritchard (at Sheffield), William Field (who supplied the raw 1885-1951 data) and Ron Johnston (who found the source for the data from 1832-1885). The Data is of all general election results since 1832 but were simplified by assigning votes to nearest equivalent modern parties: Con, Lab, Lib, Nat, Other and abstentions. For the period 1832-1880: Chartists and Lib-Lab votes were labelled as Lab; votes were totalled to produce one per party per seat (so that there were no multi-member seats; university seats were ignored; then votes were redistributed to 1885 seats (i.e. Bristol’s votes evenly distributed to the four seats of Bristol N, S, W and E using seat names as a guide to the allocation). A table is given below of how this allocation was done. For the period 1885-1910: Liberal Unionists votes were labelled as Con; votes were simplified as before and all then redistributed to 1918 seats using Kinnear’s maps: the British voter, 1968 (for example Bristol South votes were redistributed to Bristol South and Central – tables are given below). For the period 1918-1945: A similar process was followed, and the 25 new seats of 1945 allocated by hand, then redistributed to the seats of 1950 (see tables below). All the results by1950-1951 seat were then redistributed to 1955 by the final table below – based on working with maps of boundaries by hand.

Sir DAVID STEWART oi' Banchory. rn »(be?^ /IftcmociaU ALDERMEN, PROVOSTS, LORD PROVOSTS OF ABERDEEN, 1272-189S. ALEXANDER M. MUNRO F.S.A. (Scot.) ABERDEEN: 1. a1^ PllINTED FOR ' THE SUBSCRIBERS. N> i 1 MDCCCXCVir. r , PREFACE. Among the royal burghs in Scotland, Aberdeen holds a prominent position for the completeness of its municipal history, and in no respect is this more clearly shown than by glancing down the long list of those who have held the chief civic position in the community. In making a retrospect of the municipal life of the burgh, we are indebted to the almost unbroken series of local records, both civil and ecclesiastical, for the material used for placing in relief the history of those who, in times gone past, have guided the counsels of the ancient burgh. The aim of the following sketches is to gather up the frag- ments of history relating to the various occupants of the civic chair, and to group round them some of the incidents of their municipal career, with the possibility, it may be, of interesting not a few in the fact that, as Baillie Skene says, " this city hath not been a barren mother or nurse in our Israel in bringing forth and breeding up many eminent men and brave spirits, whereof there may be set down a large catalogue." The list of those who have filled the chair, so far as recovered, embraces the names of one hundred and forty-two individuals, who might fitly find a place in such a catalogue as Baillie Skene proposed.
