We have gotten tired of activities being suspended, but we are going to be prudent about the way we resume activities. Millie is holding a virtual LOV meeting on June 6. The lodge will have a virtual ice cream social on June 20. See Page 3 for details.

Our country is trying to resume activities so that our economy improves. We know that we have to be careful. This lodge has many elderly members, so we have to be extra careful. We are trying to get back in contact with each other using virtual meetings. We drew inspiration for our virtual social from the House of Norway. They held a virtual celebration of Syttende Mai. I had the honor of raising the flag, and Thelma sang the anthem. People were able to attend on Facebook. We go dark in July and August. Let’s hope that things are much better by September. Register for this Social by sending an e-mail to [email protected] Registering does not obligate you to attend, but it will enable you to receive an e-mail with information needed to connect to the Zoom meeting. The e- mail needs to tell me your name and e-mail address. If you plan to phone in, please give me your phone number. If you have a friend or family member who wants to attend from his/her own device, please tell me that person’s name and e-mail address. You don’t have to tell me about the people who might be with you when you join the meeting.

Be sure to download the Zoom app to your device before the Social starts. Instruction for doing that are on the next page. You will receive an e-mail the day before the Social with the information you need to connect.

Bring your favorite ice cream with you to your favorite device for online meetings. We will sing the usual 3 anthems and say the Pledge of Allegiance. Then we will settle down, eat ice cream, and talk about how we have coped with sheltering at home. (No worries if you don’t remember the words to the anthems. The host will share his desktop and show the words to each anthem as we sing it.)

It is best to use a computer, tablet, or smart phone that has a camera, microphone, and speakers. If you don’t have these, you can use any phone to call in for an audio-only connection. (If you are calling in on your phone for audio only, you won’t need to install the Zoom app.) You can install the Zoom app on your preferred device by using any web browser. Visit the Zoom website (https://zoom.us), scroll down to the bottom, and click on the Download link:

To join a meeting, start up your Zoom app and click on “Join”. You will see a box like this:

Get the meeting ID and password from the e-mail you receive prior to the meeting. Enter the Meeting ID and your name. Please don’t be cute about your name. Make sure that the host recognizes who you are based on your name. Click on “Join”. You will be prompted for the password and then you can join. You will go into a virtual waiting room and when the host recognizes you, you will be admitted to the meeting. Alternatively, you can click on the link in the e-mail under the words “Join Zoom Meeting”. If you have already installed the app, then you will be connected to the meeting. The e-mail will have phone numbers that you can use if you want to phone in. None of them are local.

The June issue of the Sons of Norway Viking magazine is now online. There is also an archive of the issues. You have to login using your id and password of your Sons of Norway account. The archive goes back to November 2009. In the June 2020 issue are: • The colorful world of Scandinavian sweets • The life and legacy of Edvard Grieg • Scandinavian-inspired gifts to brighten somebody’s day. This is the 21st Century. Each attendee will need access to a computing device equipped with a camera, microphone, and speaker. This can be a desktop or laptop computer, a tablet (like an iPad) or smart phone. Each program will run for two weeks, Monday through Friday plus a graduation on the final Saturday. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the graduation.

We will engage with the campers and students via the Zoom video conferencing system from 10:00 AM through 1:00 PM Monday through Friday and the graduation/closing ceremonies will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday of the second week. We will be providing Norwegian language instruction, cultural skill training, presentations on Viking era life and skills, and time for the attendees to have social time together. Each weekday will conclude with the attendees having lunch together (lunch to be provided by parents/guardians). There will always be one or more adults in the Zoom conference, but younger children may need local adult supervision.

Norwegian Startup Fights Loneliness Using Tech

For many people waiting out the Covid-19 crisis from their homes, the sense of isolation and loneliness can be just as difficult to manage as their fears of the virus itself. To make matters worse, those most at risk of serious illness are often the most isolated—especially the elderly, who may not be familiar or comfortable with the technology that many younger people rely on to keep in touch from afar. But, a Norwegian startup is developing a solution to this problem. In Norway, more than one in three people over age 67 live alone. Many older people have relatively small social circles and are likely to have mobility issues or health concerns that add to their isolation. No Isolation is a Norwegian company that is offering a device called Komp, which looks a lot like an old-fashioned television. It features a screen and a single knob for adjusting the volume and turning the device on and off. No username or password is required. Norwegian Performance Group Wardruna Coming to El Cajon on October 16

Wardruna is difficult to classify. Their performance is not like anything else you’ve ever seen--part music, part drama, part history lesson, part poetry. Led by Einar Selvik, they’ve released three albums and have a worldwide following. They are dedicated to creating musical renditions of cultural and esoteric Norse traditions, and make significant use of historical and traditional Nordic instruments. They also contributed music to History Channel’s series VIKINGS, and Einar appeared in two episodes.

From their bio: “Wardruna merge academics with pop culture, and their thorough and serious approach has made them one of today’s foremost communicators of Norse culture. Today’s top international scholars on Old Norse studies use Einar’s work to exemplify how music might have been executed in earlier times in Scandinavia and he has lectured about his work with historical music in prestigious universities such as Oxford, Reykjavik University, and University of Bergen. Wardruna was commissioned by the Norwegian government to write and perform a music piece for the 200-year anniversary of the Norwegian constitution in 2014.”
