Sarah Weil Rabbi Aaron Leibowitz Sarah is passionate about Israel and Orthodox Rabbi Aaron Leibowitz is a Jerusalem transforming conflict through dialogue and social City Council Member who believes in an inclusive activism. She serves as Development Director of and pluralistic Jerusalem. He is the founder of the Yerushalmit Movement as well as heads the 'Hashgacha Pratit', an alternative community- "Meeting Place" project. She speaks in Israel and based Kosher food supervision challenging the abroad and writes on conflict transformation and monopoly of the Israeli Chief Rabbinate. He is the intersection of LGBT and religion. Sarah was head of the Beit Midrash “Sulam Yaakov” in recently chosen by Yediot Aharonot as one of Nachlaot and former chair of the Nachlaot the top 50 social change-agents of Israel for Community Council. The aim of this course will be to attune the reader's ear to the sophisticated deployment of subtext, context, and inter-text (allusions), as well as to the artistic use of ambiguity, repetition, key words, and wordplay. A greater appreciation of Tanach as literature will lead to a more profound religious connection to Tanach as kitvei kodesh. Language: Hebrew Living as a Holy Nation Rav Rafi Eis At Har Sinai God charges the Israelites to be a holy nation. But what does that mean? We will first study Sefer Bamidbar which discusses the building of the community and nation, with all the messiness that comes when fiercely independent individuals form a community. In the second half of the year, we will learn Sefer Devarim to understand the essential lessons needed to live without God's overt miracles from generation to generation. Finally we will explore the sometimes esoteric ethic of sanctity through Sefer Vayikra. Parshat HaShavua: Living in Jewish Time Rav Tuvia Kaplan We will follow the parsha as it sets our agenda for the week. The stories of the avot, exile, yetziat Mitzrayim, Matan Torah, the Mishkan, korbanot and the beginning of life in the desert will be our "news" and topics of discussion for the week. Each time I spoke to him I came away with new insights about life and society, particularly Israeli society. * * * Hundreds of Women Scholars A revolution is taking place. Yet most of the orthodox community denies that it is a revolution. They look with wonder and pride at what is being created, and yet downplay the revolutionary aspect of this feminist development. To some extent, this soft-pedaling of the revolutionary aspect of women's study of Judaism is tactical. The leaders of the revolution are fearful of arousing the opposition of the conservative elements of the religious Establishment whom they need for both financial and institutional support. But most of all, revolution runs counter to the self-image of most of the orthodox women involved in women's study. Revolution is identified with the breakdown of tradition, and these women cherish and want to promote the tradition.

The appointment was for 3 a.m. because, in those days, the Rebbe learned and worked all day and would only see people at night. We came into his office and were astonished to find it in perfect order. His desk — a very big desk — was absolutely clean. There was not one piece of paper on it. I believe there was a Book of Psalms on the desk, and that’s all. It seemed to us that there was no unfinished business in his office. Other people have a desk which is cluttered with open books, letters and other documents — all kinds of things that indicate they’re in the middle of this or that. But with the Rebbe, there was nothing. Everything was in order. There was no indication that he was there every single day, for hours upon hours, producing a tremendous amount of Torah material — which is, in fact, what he y name is Chaim Brovender. LEARNING FROM RAMAH 247 DANIEL GREYBER Reflections on Eight Summers of Lishma, 1999–2007 Background The summer of 2007 marked the ninth summer of the Lishma program — a joint program of Camp Ramah in California and the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (ZSRS). Lishma is another in a long list of educationally innovative programs fostered by the creative spirit of Ramah camping, and the sixtieth anniversary of Ramah presents an appropriate time to reflect on Lishma’s successes and challenges nine years later. What is Lishma? Lishma is an egalitarian, yeshiva-study, summer program where young adult Jews explore their Jewish identities through the lens of traditional Jewish text study, prayer, and practice. To date, more than 110 young adults have participated in the Lishma program, many of whom then continued to study for rabbinical ordination at The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), ZSRS, Boston Hebrew College, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC), and Hebrew Union College (HUC), or master’s degrees in Jewish education at JTS and American Jewish University (AJU) and Jewish communal service at AJU and HUC. Just as important (if not more), most alumni are young, highly involved lay lead- ers in organized Jewish life, and some have made aliyah. This essay reviews the story of how and why Lishma first began, provides an assessment of its successes and challenges, including the place for Lishma and programs like it within the Ramah camping system, and presents suggestions for the future.
