Reviewed by Milivoj Alanović ( Novi Sad ) Preface One should ask why to launch a new peer-reviewed journal for Slavic studies. This fi eld of research sees a variety of excellent projects. However, the avail- able journals are, for the most part, limited to individual Slavic languages or subfi elds and, correspondingly, represent separate (mostly national) scholarly traditions. The missions of these teams are self-evident. Our position, on the contrary, is a tricky one. We aim at bringing toge- ther diverse studies dedicated to aspects of Slavic philology and neighbouring fi elds. We hope that the journal will become a forum of international inter- action and mutual enrichment of the Russian, East and West European, and North American philological trends. Our main strategical goal is to present the Slavic world and Slavic studies as crossroads of cultural and scholarly tra- ditions. Chanses are that the project will succeed, but it is but a possibility. As for now, what we are confi dent in is that the idea spontaneously brought together not only an impressive editorial board, but a group of scholars willing to participate with contributions, critics and discussions. The preparations of the fi rst issue was a time of vivid exchange of opinions, and, eventually, some fun. Hopefully, to be continued. The journal will come out in two issues per year both in hard copies and online. It is based on “anonymous and blind referees” system. Н. Кривко, Ф. Р. The analysis carried out on the rich corpus of Old Serbian charters writt en in the vernacular and followed by a com- parison with the data from Old Russian. The research is an att empt to reconstruct their possible Proto-Slavic structure, both linguistic and conceptual. Aft er presenting the relevant data, the author reconstructs the following Proto- Slavic formulas: *stojati tvrьdo / krěpьko vь / na klętvě (kъ) komu ‘stand fi rm in / on the oath toward someone’, *drьžati tvrьdo / krěpьko klętvǫ (kъ) komu ‘hold fi rm the oath toward someone’. Both Serbian and Russian charters show lexical variations in the prepositional phrase and in the adverbial modifi er of the formulas, which testify to their semantic compositionality. The etymology of their basic lexical constituents (*stojati, *drьžati, *tvrъdo, *krěpьko) indicates that ‘immobility, fi rmness’ is their core meaning, *drьžati ‘make immo- bile > hold’ being just a transitive version of *stojati ‘be immobile > stand’. ALBANIAN LITERATURE Robert Elsie (1993) 1. The historical background - II. Attributes of modern Albanian literature - III. Literature of the post-war period - IV. Literature of the sixties, seventies and eighties - V. Albanian literature in Kosovo - VI. Perspectives for the future - VII. Chronology of modern Albanian literature 1. The historical background Being at the crossroads between various spheres of culture has never been a gain to the Albanians as one might have expected. An Albanian national culture and literature1 was late to develop and had enormous difficulty asserting itself between the Catholic Latin civilization of the Adriatic coast, the venerable Orthodox traditions of the Greeks, Serbs and Bulgarians and the sophisticated Islamic culture of the Ottoman Empire. First non-literary traces of written Albanian are known from the 15th century, e. g. Bishop Paulus ’ baptismal formula of November 8, 1462. Beginning with the Missal (Meshari) of Gjon Buzuku2 in 1555, the early Albanian literature of the 16th and 17th century with its primarily religious focus might have provided a foundation for literary creativity in the age of the Counter- Reformation under the somewhat ambiguous patronage of the Catholic Church, had not the banners of Islam soon been unfurled on the eastern horizons. The Ottoman colonization of Albania, which had begun as early as 1385, was to split the Albanians definitively into three spheres of culture, all virtually independent of one another: 1) the cosmopolitan traditions of the Islamic Orient using initially

Your family, where you grew up… Zenun Çelaj: So, it doesn’t necessarily have to be about Prishtina? Aurela Kadriu: No, no. Zenun Çelaj: Okay. Aurela Kadriu: We’re talking about your life, then if in a particular moment it connects to Prishtina. Zenun Çelaj: I am Zenun Çelaj, I come from a northern village in Montenegro, Vuthaj, valley of Plava and Gucia. A very historical area and natural beauty. Very rare, beautiful. Not because it’s my hometown, but because it is. Other people have also said this. I come from a family of shepherds, they had a lot of sheep. We were a big family and I’m practically the first to get an education in my family, which had over 60 members scattered across the border. I’m talking about Montenegro and Albania, since the village was located like that, it had the properties there. At that time there were no borders, then the borders were created and we didn’t see our relatives there for decades, nor did we know about their lives, nor about their fate as they didn’t for us.

It reflects events he lived through, his personal impressions, and gives conclusions, which provide lessons for all periods, drawn from the hostile activity carried out openly or behind the scenes, against our National Liberation Movement, our people's revolution and socialist Albania by the Anglo-American bourgeoisie. It brings out clearly the clash between the diabolical plans, attempts, manoeuvres and concrete activities of Anglo-American imperialism to put Albania under its sway, on the one hand, and the vigilance, the blow for blow struggle of the Communist Party of Albania and its General Secretary, the leader of the Army and the National Liberation Front and the whole patriotic Alba• nian people, Comrade Enver Hoxha, on the other hand, to discover, unmask, defeat and destroy the imperialist strategy and tactics in regard to Albania. These memoirs now being published, were written in 1975. The book is available in Albanian and several foreign languages. 3 I A LITTLE HISTORY Albania — a token for barter for the «Brit- ish Lion». • The Battle of Kosovo 1389. an Albanian Epic
The Battle of Kosova 1389 An Albanian Epic Anna Di Lellio Translations by Robert Elsie In association with THE CENTRE FOR ALBANIAN STUDIES I. Introduction “Once there was a Sultan Murat…” !us begins the Albanian epic on the Battle of Kosova.1 !is is the story of Murat, a Moses-like leader who performs miracles for his people and is destined to die as a martyr, and Kopiliq, the daring warrior with magic powers who kills Murat. !e historical event that provides the background to this epic is Sultan Murat I’s Kosova campaign in the spring of 1389, culminating in a confrontation with the coalition of Balkan forces led by the Serbian Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović.2 Both the Sultan and the Prince were killed in a battle that apparently ended with no decisive victory in the field, or no immediate outcome, but signaled the weariness of local forces against the Ottomans. Seventy years later the last resistance was finally overcome; Kosova feudal lords lost their independence to the Ottomans, who established their rule over the entire region. Compared with the fame of the Serbian epic songs on the same battle - centered on the characters of Prince Lazar the pious, Vuk Branković the traitor, and Miloš Obilić the loyal general and assassin of the Sultan -, knowledge of the Albanian epic is scarce. !is is no surprise. !e Albanian oral tradition has had a profound influence on national history and self-identification, but has not had the same worldwide recognition as the Serbian tradition, for the language itself is not widely known.3 In particular, the Albanian

  • David Bellos' Indirect Translation of Ismail Kadare's the File on H: A
Volume 5, No. 3, Art. 3, August 2016 David Bellos’ Indirect Translation of Ismail Kadare’s The File on H: A Contextual Analysis Silvia Kadiu, University College London Keywords: Abstract: This article is a linguistic study of David Bellos’ indirect translation of Ismail Indirect Kadare’s The File on H (1997), a novel first published in 1980-1981 in the Albanian translation, literary review Nëntori, and translated into English on the basis of Jusuf Vrioni’s French Literary version, Le Dossier H (1989). Also called “double”, “mediated” or “second-hand”, indirect translation, translation is an understudied phenomenon, often criticised by scholars because of its English greater distance to the original. Cay Dollerup (2000: 23), for example, argues that the translation, grammatical structure of the mediating language (ML) obscures the distinctions made in French the source language (SL), and that possible “mistakes” in the ML may be repeated in translation, the target language (TL). Do fidelity and loyalty to the author become weakened in Albanian Bellos’ indirect translation? To what extent is such weakening discernible linguistically? literature And does this particular case of indirect translation reveal notable patterns or recurring types of linguistic shifts between ST and TT? Showing that some of the features specific to Kadare’s Albanian writing are tempered in the doubly-translated English text, yet highlighting that similar shifts occur in the three language directions involved, this article demonstrates that changes between ST and TT may occur in indirect translation regardless of the strategies adopted by MT – thus challenging the hypothesis that linguistic shifts in indirect translation follow a single or consistent pattern.
