FROM THE HEADMISTRESS Dear Parents,

This time of year can bring many changes: sunshine, showers, new flowers and plants, cooler clothes and maybe even an ice cream or two in the recent sunny spell. Whatever the weather, the Summer Term at Feltonfleet is a special place. Light mornings and evenings mean that our days are long and allow us to make the most of our beautiful campus. The cricket season is in full flow with dozens of matches having already been played by both girls and boys, and the site is awash with outdoor activities. The Pre-Prep seasonal hats and sun cream have been in evidence as the pupils’ learning has found a more permanent home outside. The Lower School have been busy making the best of the site and cartwheeling their way through break times. It has been a more focused and testing period for Year 5 & 6, yet they have engaged positively with exam week and left this morning full of excitement for their Isle of Wight weekend adventure.

'Loud',‘ upbeat’ and ‘exhilarating’ are the words to describe the atmosphere in the Ashbee Theatre during this week’s rehearsals for the Jazz Night next Tuesday. Listening to the Middle and Upper Choirs pouring the song Our House by Madness into the corridors was spine -tingling!

Over the past seven days our community has raised over £14,000, a brilliant community effort. On Friday evening, the annual Royal Marsden Quiz Night was supported by enthusiastic parents who quizzed and danced until midnight. On Sunday over 70 Feltonfleet pupils took part in the Restless Development Triathlon hosted by Charterhouse, and on Saturday, a group of Year 5 pupils and their dads undertook a 70 km sponsored bike ride, including an overnight camping adventure, to support the Royal Marsden Hospital. Such opportunities allow pupils to put our core values into action and look to the needs of others.

It has been a great couple of weeks. As we head towards the half way point of this exciting term, I will leave you with some of the pupil’s reflections on why this term is so special. I hope you all enjoy a lovely weekend.

Shelley Lance 1 REFLECTIONS ON SUMMER TERM

Summer term is an amazing part of the year, with so much to look forward to, from the shining sun to spending the evening playing in the woods in Boarding. As a Year 8 pupil, I can say on behalf of I like the summer Year 8, that this is our favourite term with so because it’s hot, many great things planned after CE, like the Italy flowers bloom and I trip and the weeks of fun planned into the Leavers like learning Programme, which conclude a successful, fun and Tamara G, Year 2 hardworking time at Feltonfleet. Collaboration and communication are essential life skills, and in our Pre- Prep we build in lots of opportunities for pupils to engage in activities to promote teamwork, speaking and listening. Pupils learn to listen, not just to their teachers, but more importantly, to each other.

Listening and taking account of what someone else says or thinks is not always easy, especially as human beings are born egocentric and remain this way until they are at least three years old. From then on, it’s a gradual process, learning that conversation is a two Cross key stage collaboration and peer support in way activity and by asking questions of each other and Maypole practice Year 2 and Nursery

listening to our peers we can actually extend our own understanding. The most simple and enjoyable way of promoting this is playing board games and this is an area we have been promoting in child-led, discovery and communication sessions. Children set up their own games, explain the rules, take turns, learn to win, lose, make mistakes and help each other. At the end of a session they take responsibility for packing away their games carefully for next time. In Reception, children have games groups for their communication session and they are now highly competent at collaborating effectively with Collaboration and conversation in Year 2 Maths minimal adult intervention. The adults can then interact more specifically in games that promote language development and the extension of vocabulary and sentence structure.

This week in IPC, Year 4 pupils have been continuing their Unit of Study, They Made a Difference. They worked together to match scientists with their area of expertise or discovery and carried out more in-depth research about a chosen scientist. Do be sure to ask them about Marie Curie, Isaac Newton and Jane Goodall, amongst others!

Year 3 have been putting their cartography skills to the test, as part of their IPC Unit, Explorers and Adventurers. Their knowledge of the world and the voyages of discovery that have taken place is increasing weekly.

Our After-School Club programme is in full swing, making the most of the glorious weather this week. Cricket is the highlight of the sporting week for many of our pupils and their enjoyment and progress in our Cricket Club is clear to see. We have some serious cricketing talent among the Lower School boys and girls - watch this space!

Forest School Club is hugely popular and our pupils have been honing their skills in our woods, with some of them taking the exercise extremely seriously, by donning full camouflage at the end of the day. It has been a chance for pupils who do not regularly spend time together to meet, have fun and share a common interest.

FOCUS ON EXAMS - WHY, WHAT AND HOW?

This week saw the pupils in Middle School sitting their Summer term exams. There was a certain frisson as Years 5 and 6 filed into the Sports Hall on Monday morning, but the revision sessions planned in between exams, along with mindful breathing exercises, helped to settle the nerves. The session led by Amanda Wright last Friday provided a suitably calming steer and an opportunity to answer any questions the pupils had.

These exams serve partly as a summative assessment of the pupils’ knowledge and understanding, adding to what we already know through class work, prep and ongoing assessments throughout the year, but more importantly, they give the children the experience of sitting some tests over a few days in a formal setting as part of their journey into senior school beyond Feltonfleet.

The pupils coped extremely well across the week. Here are some of their reflections: It was spooky and tense, as you have The whole process was okay, I found the exams easy to to keep silent, but it but some of the last understand, but some is actually nicer than questions were quite hard. FOCUS ON ART - TACTILE AND MESSY

Year 8 discovered that working with clay becomes a whole body experience, encouraging both gross and fine motor development. Clay, like water and sand, has a natural appeal because there is no separation between the pupils and their work. Having direct contact with the clay allows for a completely different multi-sensory experience. Clay can feel slimy and wet, or it can be hard and dry. Different clays have different textures, smells and colours.

Year 7 love discovering and experimenting with various types of art medium. Using charcoal for creative self-expression is a different experience from working with paint, markers or pastels. The pupils are fully engaged in the process of learning fun ways to use charcoal for drawing. They have used reductive charcoal drawing, also known as negative drawing, as a resourceful, inventive process where they first darken the entire sheet of paper with charcoal dust, then using a rubber to create the primary shapes and images. Darker, defining outlines and values are then added with a charcoal stick.

FOCUS ON D & T SCHOLARSHIPS

Year 8 students have produced some excellent quality work for the Design and Technology scholarship programme. They have worked with a range of materials, showing accuracy and skill when using a variety of manufacturing processes. Alongside the practical work they also had to present a written portfolio as evidence of the design process to produce such high quality pieces. Some of this work will be on display on Monday evening (20th May) at the joint D & T and Art exhibition which will take place in the Ashbee Theatre.

SPORTS ROUND UP

What a couple of weeks in school sport! The weather has played its part recently, but fixtures have been retained where safe to do so. The launch of cricket has gone well and the first team boys are leading the way. A win in the Cup last week has set up a quarter final epic with Parkside on Friday the 24th of May (a lovely way to start half term for those who want to support the boys). Congratulations to Jack, for taking five wickets in four overs for only seven runs - this was exceptional bowling.

Table tennis has been a real success story at school, moving from a playground activity to the National Finals! The U13 and U11 teams competed at the IAPS tournaments over the Bank Holiday weekend. All the boys played really well and showed real improvement against national and international competition. Nihaal and Freddy managed to win their group matches and both were beaten as quarter finalists in their respective tournaments - not bad being amongst the best 16 table tennis players in over 600 schools! I would like to just say a HUGE thank you to Mr Bishop and Mr Cato for their tireless motivation and efforts bringing table tennis to the mainstream at school.

GIRLS CRICKET UPDATE

Wednesday saw a busy afternoon of girls cricket at this week. There were six games of cricket being played at the same time, on what is now being used as a home ground. We had a successful afternoon with the 1st and 3rds beating Thomas’s Clapham, and the U11A and U11B beating Hall Grove. Well done girls!

U10A TEAM UNDEFEATED

It has been such a fantastic start to the U10A’s cricket season!

We are undefeated so far, having played some tightly contested games against St Georges, Hall Grove and Cranleigh.

The team have worked tremendously well throughout their last three matches. Some great accomplishments include Isabella T’s precise bowling which earned her five wickets in the past three games and some astonishing fours and sixes from Annabel, Tiggy and Laila!

Week by week we have developed our understanding of running between the wickets, as shown in our most recent game, where we earned 96 runs in just 60 balls!

Our catching is progressing, with a special mention to Lola B for a phenomenal overhead catch at square leg yesterday afternoon! ‘Catches win matches’ is our motto from now on!

The under 10A team are working so well due to their commitment to practising at home and at break times, as well as with their clubs. Hopefully we can keep up our winning streak!

INFORMAL PIANO CONCERT

Early on Friday morning, we were treated to a wonderful concert from the Lower School piano pupils of Mrs Allen. It was a full programme with a lot of excited performers. For some of these young players, this was their first ever concert and it was lovely to hear such calm, well-prepared performances. Many thanks go to Mrs Allen for all of her hard work and also to the many parents that kindly gave up their time to come and support our talented young pianists.

Emma Weinel EXCITEMENT IS BUILDING AHEAD OF JAZZ NIGHT Music Teacher

On Thursday afternoon over 120 children gathered in the Ashbee to assemble the music for next Tuesday's Jazz Night with the Alan Barnes Quintet. It was so exciting to hear the Upper Choir, Middle Choir, Orchestra and Jazz Band rehearse their parts together for the first time; things are sounding good. Chris Andrews Director of Music 12 SLEEP HYGIENE SEMINAR

Last Friday, Judy Clark, a sleep consultant, delivered a presentation to Feltonfleet parents and to Years 5-8. During both presentations Judy provided bedtime strategies and tips, she talked about the 30 minute pre -sleep routine and she reinforced the relationship between sleep and its effect on our well-being. I learned that what someone does during the day will impact on their sleep, and how they sleep at night will have an impact on the following day. If you would like any further information I recommend that you look at Judy’s website https://www.babywinkz.com.

Sam Blewitt Positive Living Subject Leader

I never realised how much there was to learn about ‘sleep’! The talk Judy gave us was very interesting and informative - it has made me realise how important good quality sleep is for your health and wellbeing. I have sleep-walked a couple of times, so I asked her why and she said that normally it is due to your mind still being active or being overtired. I will definitely use some of the skills she taught us, like having some down time before bed to wind down and relax to help me get a peaceful and During the Sleep Hygiene seminar, I learned about restful night’s sleep. Nirvana McK Yr 7 the 4 stages of sleep (from light to deep sleep to REM - dream stage), and also about how disruptive it is to go on blue-light devices 1-2 hours before sleep time, as it slows down the production of melatonin (the chemical in your body that helps you sleep). I also learned that you should have a routine before bed so that your body knows it is time to rest soon. I was also very interested when I was told that we have 1.5 hours of dreams every night, we just don’t remember them all! Finally, I was very interested to hear that we file our memories of the day during our sleep; if we don't get any sleep we will struggle to remember what happened in the day. Charlotte N Yr 6

I left feeling reassured that being firm about I very much enjoyed Judy’s informative sleep bedtime is in children’s best interests. I came workshop this morning. I will take on board her tips away with some useful small changes I can for establishing age appropriate bedtime routines make to our routine that might help the boys for children, adolescents and adults. She also go off to sleep faster. Year 6 & 7 Parent stressed the importance of sleep quality and the effect it has on our ability to function in ‘awake’ hours. Year 7 Parent 13 O T H E R N E W S

BIG BEN VISITS PRE-PREP

Last week, we welcomed Feltonfleet parent, Ian H, who talked to the children in Year 1 and 2 about running the London Marathon dressed as Big Ben. As part of the training for the Marathon, he ran as The Shard in the London Landmarks Half Marathon alongside his wife Fiona (dressed as Wonder Woman), known to you as SENCo at Feltonfleet. The children (and Miss Bray) all had great fun trying on the Big Ben costume and imagining how difficult it would have been to run 26 miles dressed like that!

MAY DAY FESTIVAL IN PRE-PREP

Following two days of glorious sunshine, a rainy day scuppered plans for May Day Festival activities outside at the Pre-Prep. However, this did not spoil the fun, as can be seen from these photographs. We were particularly impressed by our Year 2s who designed and managed the activities including Splat the Rat, Lucky Dip, Treasure Hunt and The Café. Parents then joined the pupils in the hall for songs and dancing.
