Mount Shasta Annotated Bibliography Chapter 29 Audiovisual Materials Mt. Shasta has been the subject of a wide array of video recordings, motion pictures, slide presentations, and sound recordings. Several of the entries in this section contain interviews with prominent local personalities, or contain historical information not found anywhere else. Many of the entries are about the mystic reputation of the mountain. Other entries feature tourism, railroads, the forests, commerce, etc., all with Mt. Shasta featured at some point. Two of the more widely distributed productions were the 1986 The Californians advertising spots produced by the California Department of Commerce, and the 1992 Rescue 911-The Box Canyon Incident produced by CBS News. Not all of the entries have been located; for example, neither the 1935 Lemuria: The Lost Continent, nor the 1919 The Brute Breaker motion pictures have been seen. Entries which are on reserve at the College of the Siskiyous Library have a COS Media Center number following the entry, e.g., [COS Media Center #VC-67-007]. Bessie Barriscale Also Known As: Mrs. Howard Hickman, Elizabeth Barry Scale Lived: December 8, 1885 - June 30, 1965 Worked as: accountant, film actress, film company founding partner, producer, theatre actress Worked In: United States by Maria Fosheim Lund On May 1, 1917, actress Bessie Barriscale invited members of the press corps and trade papers to the Paralta Plays company offices in New York. Agnes Smith, there on behalf of the Morning Telegraph, reported on the event a few days later, confessing to her readers that she had not initially known why the press had been summoned. However, the journalist quickly realized why when she arrived and saw a new sign on the door: “The Bessie Barriscale Feature Company.” Inside the Paralta offices she found Barriscale with her husband, actor Howard Hickman, director Oscar Apfel, and producer Robert Brunton. Announcing the formation of her own company whose pictures would be distributed by Paralta, Barriscale stressed the point that “good stories [would be] her first consideration” (n.p.). The Bessie Barriscale Feature Company was to start work in a new state-of-the-art studio in Hollywood, where, according to the Moving Picture World, they hoped to produce six to eight features per year with their first project to be the still extant title Rose O’Paradise (1918) (1100). Barriscale’s career in the moving pictures had started a few years earlier when Lasky, of what was then called the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company, bought the film rights to ten plays produced by theatre impresario David Belasco (Birchard 2004, 30).

More than 180 movies have been shot, at least in part, in this area. Some films may contain just a few seconds of footage, while others use the area for the entire feature. Aside from the obvious amusement factor, these films offer rare glimpses into the past of our community. The core list of films provided here was originally compiled in the 1980s by Joe Graziano of the Monterey County Herald, who wrote the Professor Toro column for many years. With help from his "Constant Readers" he was able to track down this vital information. We are most grateful for his efforts. I have added to the list movies made since that time. I have also removed four movies from the list after watching them and realizing that they were not actually filmed here.
