Mary Chapin Carpenter
Mary Chapin Carpenter Five-time Grammy-winner Mary Chapin Carpenter’s 15th studio album, The Dirt And The Stars, finds the singer-songwriter pondering life’s intimate, personal moments and exploring its most universally challenging questions at an unprecedented time. Written at her rural Virginia farmhouse before stay-at-home orders became the “new normal,” the songs celebrate invaluable experiences and irreplaceable wisdom, while also advocating exploration of the best in all of us. As one of just 15 women voted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, with over 15 million albums sold, 5 Grammy awards (from 15 nominations) and the recipient of two CMA and ACM awards, Carpenter’s now-classic hits include “I Feel Lucky,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” and “The Hard Way.” Produced by Ethan Johns (Ray LaMontagne, Paul McCartney, Kings of Leon) and recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, in southwest England, The Dirt And The Stars marks Carpenter’s first collection of all-new material since 2016’s The Things That We Are Made Of. Below she reveals some of the inspiration behind The Dirt And The Stars. Is there a particular theme for this album? The writer Margaret Renkl contributes regular columns about lots of different things to The New York Times. She wrote a deeply insightful one in which she said, “We are all in the process of becoming.” That doesn’t stop at a certain age. To be always a student of art and music and life, as she says, that, to me, is what makes life worth living. -
The Fishing Guide to the Stars — 1
— The Fishing Guide to the Stars — 1 I met Kramer Wetzel in early 1996. He told me that my life would soon change dramatically, but in very good ways. The next day my mother died. Six weeks later he was back on the radio show I produced. When I told him what happened he looked at my chart again and said, “Dude, looking at it in other ways, at least you’re in the right place to really launch your radio career...they love you here.” The next day I got fired. And started to look into spending the last few dollars I had on a hit man to bump off an astrologer I knew. Turns out that he had put the wrong year on my chart so all his readings were off. The moral to the story? When you’re telling Kramer your birthday info don't try and do it over the enchanting hiss of a jumbo sized can of fix o’ flat. He was doing some home improvements...the single–wide had a flat, was therefore leaning, and was therefore making his CD changer skip. An eclectic blend of The Grateful Dead, Fatboy Slim, Hank III, and Mozart is all the more chaotic with rampant skipping. I should’ve picked a better time to give him my information. These things happen, as with all aspects of life, timing is everything. But the man does know romance. He’s given me advice on every female who has crossed my path since our friendship’s conception. Actually, most of the advice has all come down to one word.. -

Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre 1010 Ulatis Drive, Vacaville, CA 95687 Box Office (707) 469-4013 For Immediate Release Contact: Desiree Tinder July 20, 2012 707-469-4015 The Platinum Season At Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre Celebrating 20 Years Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre, known as the gem of Northern California, celebrates 20 years of community entertainment with “The Platinum Season.” Kicking off the Season on Saturday, September 22 is acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter. In the 1990s, her folk-pop style was enthusiastically embraced by country radio. She won five Grammy Awards and was named the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year in 1992 and 1993. A string of Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum albums yielded a bounty of self-penned hits including “Never Had it So Good,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” “Down at the Twist and Shout,” “I Feel Lucky,” “I Take My Chances,” “Shut Up and Kiss Me” and “Tender When I Want to Be.” Her songs have also been recorded by such diverse artists as Joan Baez, Wynonna, Maura O’Connell, Mary Black, Cyndi Lauper, Shawn Colvin, Dianne Reeves, Betty Buckley, Tony Rice and Trisha Yearwood. Following a serious health scare, divorce and loss of a parent, Chapin Carpenter channeled the anguish of her experiences into a stunningly beautiful collection of songs called “Ashes and Roses” released in June 2012. The willowy blonde songwriter says “Ashes and Roses” is a record about grief and loss, but it has an arc. It does go from night into day. I feel like it travels through some of the hardest, most difficult territory to a place of renewal. -
Mary Chapin Carpenter Episode Transcript
VOICES IN THE HALL MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest, Mary Chapin Carpenter. MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER I don’t know if I’ve done anything right. But I certainly feel like I was so lucky to have caring people with me every step of the way. And I just don’t know how you do this stuff without that. I’ve made records the last ten, fifteen years that have just fulfilled me so much artistically, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. So somehow it all worked out. I think every career that I've ever admired is one that has peaks and valleys, artists who really follow their muse. PETER COOPER It’s Voices in the Hall with Mary Chapin Carpenter. “I Take My Chances” - Mary Chapin Carpenter (Come On Come On / Sony BMG) PETER COOPER That was “I Take My Chances,” written by Mary Chapin Carpenter and Country Music Hall of Fame Member Don Schlitz, and performed as part of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s multi-platinum Come On, Come On album. Mary Chapin Carpenter is the only Country music star I know of to hold Ivy League degree from Brown University in American Civilization. She logged time in Washington D.C.’s acoustic music scene, the same scene that once nurtured Emmylou Harris. And she was an unlikely signee to Columbia Records, her first release being 1987’s Hometown Girl. She went on to win multiple Grammy Awards and two Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year prizes, scoring hits including “I Take My Chances,” “Down at the Twist and Shout,” “Shut Up and Kiss Me,” “I Feel Lucky,” and “Quittin’ Time.” Her 1992 album Come On Come On has sold more than 4 million copies, and she’s know for her beautifully peculiar blend of insight and poetry. -
Luck Feelings, Luck Beliefs, and Decision Making
Luck Feelings, Luck Beliefs, and Decision Making Harold W. Willaby Psychology University of Sydney A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 2012 October 1. Reviewer: Anonymous 2. Reviewer: Michael J. A. Wohl 3. Reviewer: Peter R. Darke Signature from head of PhD committee: ii Abstract Luck feelings have long been thought to influence decision-making involv- ing risk. Previous research has established the importance of prior out- comes, luck beliefs, and counterfactual thinking in the generation of luck feelings, but there has been no comprehensive demonstration of this system of variables that impinge on luck feelings. Moreover, the actual relationship of luck feelings and risky choice has not been directly tested. Addressing these gaps, results from five studies are presented in this thesis. Empirical work begins with an extensive validation exercise of an existing 22-item luck beliefs scale. Those 22 items are refined to a 16-item scale, comprising four luck belief dimensions that inter-relate in a compelling structural ar- rangement. Insights from this exercise, and a subset of the items are used throughout the remainder of the thesis. Results from two studies contra- dicted the counterfactual closeness hypothesis, the most prominent theory in the psychology of luck, which holds that counterfactual thinking is essen- tial for generating lucky feelings. However, one study found that affect and luck feelings are not unitary, as evidenced by a weak form of double disso- ciation of affect and lucky feelings from overestimation and overplacement. Another study found lucky and unlucky feelings to be distinct. The effects of lucky feelings and unlucky feelings on risky choice differ by the nature of a prior outcome. -

Don Schlitz: from “The Gambler” to the Grammys
Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 7-12 Don Schlitz: From “The Gambler” to the Grammys After five years of trying to get his songs recorded in Nashville, Don Schlitz hit the jackpot with “The Gambler.” With its sing-along chorus and wise lyrics, the 1978 country single by Kenny Rogers shot to #1, earned a Grammy, and became an instant classic. Its enormous success allowed Schlitz to quit his night job as a computer operator at Vanderbilt University in Nashville so he could create music full-time. Rogers says of Schlitz: “Artists hope for a song to get them on the radio, another to keep them on the radio, and then one to give them a career. Don writes careers.” Born on August 29, 1952, in Durham, North Carolina, Schlitz grew up in a household that valued reading. He became interested in the family’s set of encyclopedias, which he credits with helping him become “very familiar with words.” During church, he studied the hymnal, figuring out That advice paid off. In the 1980s, Schlitz’s many credits the meters and rhyme patterns of the songs. Although he says included “Forever and Ever, Amen,” a Grammy-winning his first writing was “really bad poetry,” he kept trying to put song for Randy Travis. He also has composed hits for his own words to music. Alabama, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and George Strait, all members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Schlitz At age twenty, Schlitz dropped out of college and moved was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in to Nashville, working nights at Vanderbilt and spending 1993 and the national Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012. -
