CAP UCLA Presents Lucinda Williams with Special Guest Bill Frisell Plus Sean Row Mar
Press Release Friday, December 18th, 2015 Contact: Ashley Eckenweiler [email protected] CAP UCLA Presents Lucinda Williams with special guest Bill Frisell plus Sean Row Mar. 4 at Royce Hall Join us in appreciating “America’s best songwriter” (TIME magazine) Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA is proud to present three-time Grammy award winner Lucinda Williams, who effortlessly blends folk, rock, country, and blues into electric, intimate performance. She is joined by special guest Bill Frisell—one of the leading guitarists in jazz—for an exciting collaboration that features on her upcoming album The Ghosts of Highway 20. Alt-folk singer-songwriter Sean Rowe will open the evening, illuminating his eclectic influences with a remarkable voice . Tickets ($29-$59) for Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m. are available now at cap.ucla.edu, via Ticketmaster and at the UCLA Central Ticket Office at 310.825.2101. Lucinda Williams has been maneuvering down a path all her own for more than three decades now. She began in Lake Charles, Louisiana: a town with a rich tradition in all of America’s indigenous music, from country to the blues. After several years of playing the hardscrabble clubs of her adopted state of Texas, she gained a solid enough footing to record her self-titled album that would later become a touchstone for the Americana movement. But she didn’t sit still after that. For much of the next decade, Williams paid her dues and built up a fan base the hard way: winning hearts show by show, not overnight. -

Lucinda Williams .Pages
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution July 12, 1998 You may not know her name. You may not have seen her face. But after hearing 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, ' you'll know . LUCINDA WILLIAMS By Eileen M. Drennen The perfect sound can live in your mind like a landscape you know by heart. You can circle around it, tirelessly, until maybe, just maybe, you capture it on tape. When others finally hear it, they will heap praise upon you for getting it so right. Until then, you may be dismissed as a "nutty perfectionist" by band mates or even The New York Times. And instead of talking about your music, every interviewer will want to chat about being obsessive. Welcome to Lucinda Williams' nightmare. At 45, she is revered by other musicians, critics and fans for making country blues that are closer to poetry than pop. She's never charted, and every label she's ever signed with has folded, so she's largely unknown to the average consumer of popular entertainment. "Passionate Kisses, " her most famous song, only hit country radio when Mary Chapin Carpenter covered it, winning them both a Grammy in 1994. Though her fifth album, "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" is being greeted with raves (see ours on Page L3), it did not come without a price: three sets of producers, an ever- expanding cast of musicians, take and retake, mix and remix. The usual question is "why does Lucinda Williams take so long to make a record?" She's gladly sacrificed volume for creative control on each disc --- her last, the acclaimed "Sweet Old World, " came out in 1992. -

Mary Chapin Carpenter
Mary Chapin Carpenter Five-time Grammy-winner Mary Chapin Carpenter’s 15th studio album, The Dirt And The Stars, finds the singer-songwriter pondering life’s intimate, personal moments and exploring its most universally challenging questions at an unprecedented time. Written at her rural Virginia farmhouse before stay-at-home orders became the “new normal,” the songs celebrate invaluable experiences and irreplaceable wisdom, while also advocating exploration of the best in all of us. As one of just 15 women voted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, with over 15 million albums sold, 5 Grammy awards (from 15 nominations) and the recipient of two CMA and ACM awards, Carpenter’s now-classic hits include “I Feel Lucky,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” and “The Hard Way.” Produced by Ethan Johns (Ray LaMontagne, Paul McCartney, Kings of Leon) and recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, in southwest England, The Dirt And The Stars marks Carpenter’s first collection of all-new material since 2016’s The Things That We Are Made Of. Below she reveals some of the inspiration behind The Dirt And The Stars. Is there a particular theme for this album? The writer Margaret Renkl contributes regular columns about lots of different things to The New York Times. She wrote a deeply insightful one in which she said, “We are all in the process of becoming.” That doesn’t stop at a certain age. To be always a student of art and music and life, as she says, that, to me, is what makes life worth living.
