AGAINST FOUR CHILEAN PLUM POX VIRUS ISOLATES THROUGH MICRO-GRAFTING Wendy Wong1, Paola Barba2, Catalina Álvarez2, Álvaro Castro3, Manuel Acuña2, Pablo Zamora3, Marlene Rosales2, Paola Dell´Orto4, Michael R. Moynihan4, Ralph Scorza5, and Humberto Prieto2* ABSTRACT The transgenic plum (Prunus domestica L.) C5, in which the coat protein (CP) gene of the Plum pox virus (PPV) is inserted, represents a unique example of the use of genetic engineering for fruit crop improvement in Prunus spp. Field trials in Poland, Romania, and Spain have demonstrated resistance of C5 to several D and M strain PPV isolates. In Chile, the quarantine regulations for PPV and for genetically modified (GM) plants require that the testing of C5 for resistance to Chilean PPV isolates be done under controlled isolated conditions. To carry out these tests C5 shoots were multiplied in vitro and micro-grafted onto four Adesoto101 (Prunus insititia L.) rootstock populations that had been previously infected each with one of four Chilean PPV-Ds. Tests were carried out under controlled conditions in a biosafety greenhouse. Symptoms appearance, virus detection, and viral mRNA levels for the cylindrical inclusion (CI) and CP genes were determined during three consecutive growing seasons. Complete resistance to all PPV isolates was demonstrated during the first 2 yr in all of the C5 plants. In the third season, four of 10 C5 plants showed mild symptoms on leaves close to the graft union and low but detectable CI mRNA levels in the C5 scions. -

This year we were proud to convene members of the industry from 161 countries, regions and territories to experience the future through technology. Featuring impressive debuts in 5G, artificial intelligence, transportation and more, CES 2019 showcased how technology enables every business to succeed. This year, we added an area on resilience to showcase technologies that can help society stay connected and safe. A new health care track also provided medical professionals with CME credits. We are pleased that the audit concluded that CES 2019 attracted 175,212 in total attendance. This number compares to 182,198 in CES 2018 and the high of 184,279 at CES 2017. This result is in line with our strategy of managing attendee numbers and attracting the most highly qualified attendees. This strategy is aimed at helping limit hotel price increases and the pressure on travel to and around Las Vegas during CES. While CES attracted government leaders from around the world, many members of the U.S. government were not able to attend due to the government shutdown. In Sicily, more than half of greenhouse tomato production is derived from the Province of Ragusa on the southeastern coast, where especially cherry tomato typologies are cultivated. Over the last decade, the Ragusa Province has registered a decrease both in terms of greenhouse tomato area and harvested production due to several structural problems that would require restructuring of the tomato supply chain. Thus, since recognition of real costs and profitability of tomato growing is a vital issue, both from the perspective of the farm, as well as from that of the entrepreneur, the aim of this paper was to analyze the economic sustainability of Sicilian greenhouse cherry tomato cultivated in the Ragusa Province. -

Whitish-pink cherry flowers in March followed by delicious small bright red cherries in late May to early June. • Korean bush cherry (Prunus japonica): A fine-textured bush cherry with fuzzy leaves that grows to 5 to 8 feet in height and width. • Fall-ripening bush cherry (Prunus japonica x jacquemontii): A small, shrubby, fine-textured bush cherry that grows to 5 feet in height and width. Landscape uses: Hedge, specimen, orchard, or foundation planting. All are attractive to bees and other pollinators, and make good wildlife habitat. Edible/Medicinal properties: • Nanking cherry: The small sweet/tart, juicy red cherries are the first bush fruit of the season to ripen and are quite tasty for fresh eating or processing. We love this fruit and are always excited when they begin to ripen up. You’ll have to race your wildlife for these tasty beauties. • Korean bush cherry: These bush cherries produce average-sized, bright red cherries in mid summer. The cherries are similar to Nanking cherries, but sweeter. Less productive than Nanking cherry. The cherries are great for fresh eating and can be frozen for delicious winter snacks. They also make tasty juice and are high in anthocyanins and other antioxidants. -

The need for cooperation and interchange of information among investigators of these diseases has been apparent for a long time. As early as 1941, a conference was called by Director V. R. Gardner at Michigan State University to discuss the problem. One result of this early conference was the selection of a committee (E. M. Hildebrand, G. H. Berkeley, and D. Cation) to collect and classify both published and unpublished data on the nomenclature, symptoms, host range, geographical distribution, and other pertinent information on stone fruit virus diseases. This information was used to prepare a "Handbook of Stone Fruit Virus Diseases in North America," which was published in 1942 as a mis- cellaneous publication of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.
