Allegro IV. Finale (Quasi una Fantasia): Andante: Allegro molto STEINWAY PIANO TAUNO HANNIKAINEN AUNO HANNIKAINEN was born in JyvaskyHi, Finland, February 26, T 1896. His parents were both teachers of music, his father a com­ poser. Tauno and his three brothers have all become professional musicians. He began his career as a 'cellist, having studied with Ossian Fohrstrom in Helsinki, and Andre Hekking and Pablo Casals in Paris. Ilmari Hannikainen is a Professor at the Sibelius Academy in Hel­ sinki, a prominent pianist and a composer. Arvo Hannikainen is the Concertmaster of the Helsinki Symphony Orchestra. Vaino Hanni­ kainen is the first harpist of the same orchestra, and likewise a com­ poser. Tauno Hannikainen, after continuing and completing his musical education in Helsinki, Paris, Berlin and Vienna, formed a trio with his brothers Ilmari and Arvo, for many chamber music recitals in Finland and on the Continent. He entered the University at Helsinki in 1914, but gave up his studies two years later to become 'cellist in the Hel­ sinki Orchestra, remaining until 1919. He conducted at the Finnish State Opera in Helsinki, from 1922 to 1927, and was then appointed the conductor of the orchestra in Turku (Abo), a position which he has held from that time. Mr. Hannikainen has appeared as guest conductor in Stockholm, Berlin, Leipzig, Warsaw, Riga and other cities. He came to this country in the spring of 1938, appearing as guest at a concert of the Pops Orchestra in Boston on June 20, in commemoration of the 30oth anniversary of the arrival in Delaware of the first Finnish and Swedish ettlers in America. He conducted the Second Symphony of Sibelius. Mr. Hannikainen had made engagements to conduct orchestras in London, Paris, and Warsaw this season. He has been excused from civilian guard duty by his government for the duration of his present visit to America. CONCERTO GROSSO, op. 6, No. 10, IN D MINOR By GEORG FRIDERIC HANDEL Born at Halle, February 23, 1685; died at London, April 14, 1759 Handel composed his set of twelve concerti grossi for strings between September 29 and October 30, 1739. A notice in the London Daily Post on October 29 read: "This day are published proposals for printing by subscription with His Majesty's royal license and protection, Twelve Grand Concertos in seven parts, for four violins, a tenor, a violoncello, with a thorough-bass for the harpsichord. Composed by Mr. Handel. Price to subscribers two guineas. Ready to be delivered by April next. Subscriptions are taken by the author at his house in Brook Street, Hanover Square." The Concertos were published in the following April, and performed at the Theater Royal in Lincoln's Inn Fields. The most recent performance of this concerto at the Friday and Saturday con­ certs of this orchestra ''as on February 2, 1910. In the performance of last season, the edition of Seiffert was used. Mr. Hannikainen uses the score in its original form, restoring the harpsichord continuo as part of the concertina. OVERTURE TO "LEONORE" NO. 3, Op. 72 By LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Born at Bonn, December 16 e). 1770; died at Vienna, March 26, 1827 The third "Leonore" Overture was composed in the year 1806 for the second production of "Fidelio" in Vienna. The overture is scored for two flutes, two clarinets, two oboes, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, and strings. The Overture to "Leonore" No. 3 retains all of the essentials of its predecessor, Leonore No. 2. There is the introduction, grave and song­ ful, based upon the air of Florestan: "In des Lebens Fruhlingstagen/' in which the prisoner sings sorrowfully of the darkne s to which he is condemned, and dreams hopefully of the fair world outside. The main body of the Overture, which begin with the same theme (allegro) in both cases, ri es from a whispering pianissimo to a full proclamation. The section of working out, or dramatic struggle, attains its climax with the trumpet call (taken directly from the opera, where the signal heard off stage, and repeated, as if closer, makes known the approach of the governor, whereby the unjustly imprisoned Florestan will be saved from death). There follows a full 1·e jJrise} a reversion to the dictates of symphonic structure which Beethoven had omitted in his second overture. Now he evidently felt the need of a full symphonic L5 l rounding out, dela) ing the entrance of the coda of jubilation which dramatic equence would demand do ely to follow the trumpet fan· fare. \Vagner reproathecl Beethoven for thi undramatic repTise. * But the ubject had developed in Beethoven's imagination to a new and electrifying potency. The fanfare, implificd and more eiiectively intro· duced than in the previous version, is now oftly answered by the joyful theme of Flore tan and Leonore, used at this point in the opera.

    Ilmari Krohn and the Early French Contacts of Finnish Musicology: Mobility, Networking and Interaction1 Helena Tyrväinen Abstract Conceived in memory of the late Professor of Musicology of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Urve Lippus (1950–2015) and to honour her contribution to music history research, the article analyses transcultural relations and the role of cultural capitals in the discipline during its early phase in the uni- versity context. The focus is on the early French contacts of the founder of institutional Finnish musicology, the Uni- versity of Helsinki Professor Ilmari Krohn (1867–1960) and his pupils. The analysis of Krohn’s mobility, networking and interaction is based on his correspondence and documentation concerning his early congress journeys to London (1891) and to Paris (1900). Two French correspondents stand out in this early phase of his career as a musicologist: Julien Tiersot in the area of comparative research on traditional music, and Georges Houdard in the field of Gregorian chant and neume notation. By World War I Krohn was quite well-read in French-language musicology. Paris served him also as a base for international networking more generally. Accomplished musicians, Krohn and his musicology students Armas Launis, Leevi Madetoja and Toivo Haapanen even had an artistic bond with French repertoires. My results contradict the claim that early Finnish musicology was exclusively the domain of German influences. Erkki Melartinin pianosarja Per speculum in enigmatae, op. 93 Erkki Melartin oli 1910-luvun alussa Suomen keskeisiä säveltäjiä, jonka uudet, opusnume- roidut pianoteokset julkaistiin lähes rutiininomaisesti. Poikkeuksen muodostaa kuusiosai- nen sarja Per speculum in enigmatae op. 93, joka julkaistaan ensimmäisen kerran vasta nyt, yli 100 vuotta syntymänsä jälkeen. Syytä sarjan torjumiseen kustantamossa ei tiedetä. Sä- veltäjällä itsellään on selvästi ollut vaikeuksia kokonaisuuden hahmottamisessa, sillä hän numeroi sarjan kolmeen kertaan. Varhaisissa luonnoksissa on opusnumero 78, kustanta- jalle menneissä 87 ja lopulta omaan teosluetteloonsa Melartin kirjasi sen numerolla 93. Nimellä Souvenir ja opusnumerolla 87, nro 5 vuonna 1945 kokoelmassa Finlandia V jul- kaistun viidennen osan käsikirjoitus on joutunut erilleen muista. Käsikirjoitusten vähien päiväysten mukaan Melartin sävelsi osia ainakin vuosina 1912–1913, mutta tarkempaa ko- konaisuuden valmistumisaikaa ei tiedetä. Melartin sovitti sarjan ensimmäisen ja kuuden- nen osan orkesterille osiksi Lyyrilliseen sarjaan III, EM144 (Impressions de Belgique), jonka ensiesitys oli tammikuussa 1916. Pianosarjaa ei tiettävästi esitetty Melartinin elinaikana, vaan Niklas Pokki kantaesitti sen Mäntän musiikkijuhlilla 4.8.2017. Sarjan latinankielinen otsikko on suomeksi suunnilleen ”Peilin kautta näemme arvoituk- sen”. Raamatun korinttolaiskirjeistä peräisin oleva ilmaisu on saksaksi käännettynä Wie in einem Spiegel, jota myös Melartin joissain yhteyksissä käytti. Ensimmäinen osa Katedralen (Tuomiokirkko) on mahdollisesti Brüggen arkkitehtuurin innoittama.

    In Search of Sibelius Six A personal survey of selected performances of Sibelius’s Sixth Symphony by Christopher Howell I have recently discussed off-the-beaten-track recordings of Bruckner’s and Schubert’s sixth symphonies. I am not developing an obsession with sixth symphonies and sooner or later this occasional series will embrace works by composers who did not write six symphonies anyway. Sibelius’s Sixth Symphony has nevertheless always been both an inspiration and a frustration to me. An inspiration because in some ways it is my favourite of the seven, a frustration because performances rarely leave me as satisfied as I hoped. As with my Bruckner and Schubert articles, this is not intended as a beginner’s guide to recordings of this symphony – once little recorded, the number of available versions has increased dauntingly in recent years. In this personal search for an interpretation that matches my own vision of the work – it may not match other people’s – I shall take in most of the earlier recordings, of which there were not many till about 1960. I shall then look at some rarer versions, not all from the “official” discography. Indeed, as in my Bruckner and Schubert articles, I shall be looking at some interesting performances by conductors who were never invited to record it in the studios at all. The availability of these being somewhat volatile, I shall limit myself to heartfelt but generalized thanks to the enthusiastic bloggers, YouTube posters and contributors to limited-access channels who have made it possible for me to hear them.
