We argue against the all too frequent turn to ontology, whereby critical realists have sought an epistemological guarantor of socio- logical validity. We seek, to the contrary, to crystallize a culturally-based, hermeneutic account of a rational social science. -

Chapter 1 A Skin, not a Sweater: Ontology and Epistemology in Political Science DAVID MARSH AND PAUL FURLONG This chapter introduces the reader to the key issues that underpin what we do as social or political scientists. Each social scientist's orientation to their subject is shaped by their ontological and epistemological position. Most often those positions are implicit rather than explicit, but, regardless of whether they are acknowledged, they shape the approach to theory and the methods which the social scientist utilises. At first these issues seem difficult but our major point is that they are not issues that can be avoided (for a similar view see Blyth, Chapter 14). They are like a skin not a sweater: they cannot be put on and taken off whenever the researcher sees fit. In our view, all students of political science should recognise and acknowledge their own ontological and epistemological positions and be able to defend these positions against critiques from other positions. This means they need to understand the alternative positions on these fundamental questions. As such, this chapter has two key aims. First, we will introduce these ontological and epistemological questions in as accessible a way as possible in order to allow the reader who is new to these issues to reflect on their own position. Second, this introduction is crucial to the readers of this book because the authors of the subsequent chapters address these issues and they inform the subject matter of their chapters. As such, this basic introduction is also essential for readers who want fully to appreciate the substantive content of this book. -

It argues the relevance of interpretation that have lead to the patriarchal structures within culture and society. In effort to restructure their place in society, women are redefining gender roles through a combination of hermeneutics and Feminism. They are looking at commonly misinterpreted verses that have lead to their subordination to male culture, while also bringing attention to texts and stories within the Bible and the Quran that have long been neglected to show the equality that lies within their religions. Reading the Bible in Islamic Context
Reading the Bible in Islamic Context In the current political and social climate, there is increasing demand for a deeper understanding of Muslims, the Qur’an and Islam, as well as a keen demand among Muslim scholars to explore ways of engaging with Christians theologically, cultur- ally and socially. This book explores the ways in which an awareness of Islam and the Qur’an can change the way in which the Bible is read. The contributors come from both Mus- lim and Christian backgrounds, bring various levels of commitment to the Qur’an and the Bible as Scripture, and often have signifi cantly different perspectives. The fi rst section of the book contains chapters that compare the report of an event in the Bible with a report of the same event in the Qur’an. The second section addresses Muslim readings of the Bible and biblical tradition and looks at how Muslims might regard the Bible – Can they recognise it as Scripture? If so, what does that mean, and how does it relate to the Qur’an as Scripture? Similarly, how might Christian readers regard the Qur’an? The fi nal section explores different analogies for under- standing the Bible in relation to the Qur’an. The book concludes with a refl ection upon the particular challenges that await Muslim scholars who seek to respond to Jewish and Christian understandings of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. A pioneering venture into intertextual reading, this book has important implica- tions for relationships between Christians and Muslims. It will be of signifi cant value to scholars of both Biblical and Qur’anic Studies, as well as any Muslim seeking to deepen their understanding of the Bible, and any Christian looking to transform the way in which they read the Bible. -
