SINTRA – QUINTA DA REGALEIRA – GUIDED TOUR Located at the historic center of Sintra, classified as a World Heritage Centre by UNESCO, Quinta da Regaleira is a place with a mind of its own. Built in the early twentieth century, based on Romantic ideals, this fascinating set of buildings, rising abruptly in the middle of dense forest, is the result of the realization of the mythical dreams of its owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), who called upon the talent of the Italian architect-set designer, Luigi Manini (1848-1936). The imagination of these two unusual personalities conceived, in one hand, the revivalist sum of the most varied artistic trends – with particular emphasis on the Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance – and, on the other hand, the glorification of a national history influenced by mythical and esoteric traditions. Quinta da Regaleira is a place to feel and discover, to contemplate the garden’s and building’s scenery, to admire the Palace of Monteiro, “the Millionaire,” a truly philosophical mansion of alchemical inspiration, to walk though the exotic park, and feel the Christian spirituality in the Holy Trinity Chapel, where you are permitted to descend into the crypt and poignantly recall the symbolism and presence of the Beyond. There is also an amazing set of turrets that offers us breathtaking landscapes, fascinating views born of legend and saudade (a Portuguese word with no translation, meaning “to miss something”), palatial villas of exquisite taste, and terraces arranged for the appreciation of the Heavenly world. To culminate the visit to Quinta da Regaleira, it is necessary to invoke the Templar knight’s adventure or the ideals of the Freemasonry’s masters and descend into the monumental well by the huge spiral staircase. Down there, with our feet on an eight-pointed star, it’s as if we’ve been immersed in Mother Earth’s womb. Then, all we have left to do is to cross the darkness of the labyrinthine caves until we regain the light, reflected in the amazing lakes. The tour is guided by a Quinta da Regaleira’s professional, accredited guide in English and includes a visit to the gardens and to the numerous edifications. Groups of 30 people maximum. SINTRA – FREE WALK THROUGH THE VILLAGE AND LUNCH After the visit to Quinta da Regaleira, the participants, with the help of a previously prepared guide along with the village map, will receive information and tips of what to visit in Sintra’s historic center, classified as a World Heritage Centre by UNESCO, as well as suggestions of places to have lunch. According to the selected program – Culture and Patrimony or Active – you will also receive information about the meeting point for the visits/activities in the afternoon.
