  • “People Get Ready”
“People Get Ready” Excerpt from Lyrics By Curtis Mayfield People get ready, there's a train a comin' You don't need no baggage, you just get on board All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin' Don't need no ticket, you just thank the Lord Excerpt from the Chapter Essay by Craig Werner No song captures the feel of the early Movement better than Curtis Mayfield’s gospel-inflected “People Get Ready,” which culminates in an invitation to “get on board.” The center of a vibrant Chicago soul scene, which in terms of pure talent rivaled Detroit and Memphis, Mayfield embodied the relationship between Civil Rights, gospel and soul. Known as "the gentle genius," Mayfield grew up attending the Traveling Souls Spiritualist Church, a storefront church pastured by his Grandmother on Chicago’s poverty-stricken West Side. The experienced shaped both his politics and his approach to music. “Gospel was your foundation,” Mayfield said when asked about the inspiration for his songwriting. “All you had to do was just change some few lyrics. ‘Keep on Pushing’ was intended, written as a gospel song. All I needed to do to lock it in with The Impressions was say ‘I’ve got my strength’ instead of “God gave me strength and it don’t make sense.’ Nothing else needed to be changed.” WWW.TEACHROCK.ORG That quiet determination was part of what made Mayfield’s music more than just background for the Movement. When Martin Luther King, Jr., launched an ultimately unsuccessful campaign targeting housing discrimination in Chicago, organizers tapped into The Impressions' local popularity even more directly.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens The Reverend Alison Wilbur Eskildsen, Parish Minister The Reverend Don Randall, Community Minister “Singing to Selma” © by Myrna Adams West and Herb West, Lay Ministers A sermon delivered on March 8, 2015 At the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens, GA Centering Thoughts The freedom songs are playing a strong and vital role in our struggle. They give the people new courage and a sense of unity. Martin Luther King, Jr. Singing provided an outlet of protest for those who might normally have been intimidated by racist authority or mobs, and allowed those outside the struggle to become directly engaged. Smithsonian Folkways Singing is running this sound through your body. You cannot sing a song and not change your condition. Bernice Johnson Reagon, SNCC Freedom Singer and founder of ‘Sweet Honey in the Rock’ Sermon Herb Intro to Gathering Songs: As we gather for this morning’s worship service, let us begin with two familiar folk songs which became part of the Civil Rights movement in the 50’s and 60’s, primarily thanks to Peter, Paul, and Mary who performed them at the August 1963 March On Washington as well as during the march from Selma to Montgomery 50 years ago this month. Bob Dylan wrote “Blowin’ in the Wind” in 1962, adapting the melody from an old African-American spiritual, “No More Auction Block.” It soon became an anthem of the Civil Rights movement. Mavis Staples, of the famous Staples Singers, expressed her astonishment on first hearing the song, and said she could not understand how a young white man could write something which captured the frustration and aspirations of black people so powerfully.

World Music Drumming Transforming Lives . Building Community Playalong Recordings List May, 2017 The following PDF lists of recordings are recommended as playalong recordings to go with World Music Drumming ensembles. • Keep scrolling down to see all of the lists. • Artist and album information is given. • Most the songs can be purchased on iTunes or similar services. Putumayo recordings (Putumayo.com) are not part of iTunes. Guidelines for helping students play along with recordings • You must have a reasonably powerful sound system — playing drums with a small sound system won’t work. • Teach students to play softly; they must follow the recording, not the other way ‘round. • Begin by having students find the beat and meter of the recording: then start with air drumming their parts. • Stop drumming during breaks in the recording; then bring them back in. • “People Get Ready”—The Impressions (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2015 Essay by Brad Erickson (Guest Post)*
“People Get Ready”—The Impressions (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2015 Essay by Brad Erickson (guest post)* Original sleeve As a small, dark child, Curtis Mayfield was stung by the nickname “Smut.” As a songwriter he would transform stigma into anthems of Black pride, yet when praised for his contribution to the Civil Rights Movement, Mayfield demurred, “I’m just an entertainer.” Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield met as teenagers in a Chicago church choir. In 1958, they joined forces with a vocal trio from Tennessee to form the Impressions. By 1962, Mayfield, Sam Gooden and Fred Cash remained. Mayfield wrote the songs and played guitar with nuanced sensitivity. When the group teamed up with producer Johnny Pate in 1963, Pate’s polished arrangements propelled the Impressions to popular success. Curtis Mayfield sings “People Get Ready” in a silken falsetto over pizzicato strings and Sam Gooden responds, “There’s a train a-coming.” Mayfield’s guitar marks time with staccato upstrokes over low French horns while bell-like glockenspiel tones rise to the heavens. “You don’t need no baggage,” sings Mayfield; Gooden and Cash respond, “You just get on board.” This is a train song; this is a gospel song delivering good news. But 1965 was the height of the Civil Rights Movement, when the suppression of Black voters spurred the march from Selma to Montgomery and police assaulted peaceful marchers. To be confined in segregated schools, jobs, or neighborhoods is to lack freedom of movement. To be incarcerated, terrorized or dispossessed—and thus all too often to be Black in America—is to lack the mobility others take for granted.

Burke Thesis Advisors: Monsignor Dennis Mahon, Ph. D. Dr. Albert Widman Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters of Arts in Strategic Communication Seton Hall University South Orange, NJ The Bob Marley Effect 2 Abstract This study explores the legacy of Robert Nesta Marley through a comparison of his influence in Jamaica and the United States. The recognition that Bob Marley received, both during his life and after his death, is comparatively different between the two countries. As iconic as Marley is, why is his message and legacy different in the United States and most of his recognition not received till after his death? The researcher explores how Marley’s message was received in the two countries and whether his audience understood his philosophy and message in the same way. Results indicate that the communication of his thoughts were heard somewhat differently in Jamaica and the United States. Finally, this study presents recommendations for future research. The Bob Marley Effect 3 Dedication This thesis is dedicated to God, who is the head of my life.
