External Examiner: Dr. Carol Schick, Faculty of Education Co-Supervisor: Dr. Randal Rogers, Faculty of Fine Arts Co-Supervisor: Dr. Carmen Robertson, Faculty of Fine Arts Committee Member: Dr. Alison Hayford, Department of Visual Arts Committee Member: Dr. James McNinch, Faculty of Education Chair of Defense: Professor Kathleen Irwin, Department of Theatre Abstract Raping Pocahontas: History, Territory and Ekphrasis in the Representation of an Indigenous Girl In September of 2001, three white men from Tisdale, Saskatchewan drove a bleeding and intoxicated 12-year-old Indigenous girl to her friend's home in a nearby rural municipality. She had been, in the course of the evening, sexually violated and needed medical attention. After Dean Edmondson, Jeffrey Kindrat and Jeffrey Brown were charged with three counts of sexual assault, both provincial and national news media outlets eagerly reported the story, as its salacious narrative provided fodder for front-page news articles. As part of reporting the story, a ban prevented media outlets from publishing the girl's name and any information that might lead to her identification. Despite this court-ordered protection, however, reporters constructed her image using description or enactments of naming, which, in essence, framed a textual photograph of the girl. In the first national story written about the incident, reporter Krista Foss of the Globe and Mail describes the 12-year-old as a "Cree version of Jennifer Lopez" and that the men saw her as a physical manifestation of the cartoon, "Pocahontas" (2001, November 12). Such descriptors, which derive from her marked or signified position as an Indigenous girl, situate her as a debased "Indian Princess" and a "sexual aggressor", a sexualized Lolita responsible for the men's downfall. Thus, journalistic construction sexualizes and denigrates the 12-year-old girl through, for example, the use of language to represent or describe her body, enactments of naming, such as titles or descriptors, and the reiteration or reproduction of colonial mythologies within the textual account of the trial. Language constructs potent evocations and images that not only manifest discursive ii positions but also incite injurious action. As a result of journalistic naming, her ekphrastic body, a textual rendering representative of the visual, emerges within news narrative. Using this instance as a case study as well as an entry point into a larger discursive formation, Raping Pocahontas: History, Territory, and Ekphrasis in the Representation of an Indigenous Girl examines how news media represent Indigenous women in a proscribed and pre-formulated manner that reflects racial bias and the influence of colonialism in Canadian history. The thesis also explores how certain injurious images of Indigenous women appear in news text, as historical representation recurs and informs contemporary constructions of Indigenous women. As part of this analysis, the research draws upon the genre of ekphrasis, which melds visual culture with textual culture. m Acknowledgements This thesis has benefited from the support and guidance of many people.     "The Stereotype of the Indian Princess in J. N. Barker's The Indian Princess; or, La Belle Sauvage (1808), and The Walt Disney Film Pocahontas (1995)" Eman Fawzy Mohammed Abd El-Alim MA Researcher INTRODUCTION This paper aims to gain basic insight into the Indian Princess stereotype perpetuation; hence, it examines the methods by which this stereotype is perpetuated. It explores the function of Pocahontas's mythology to find the connection between popular culture, the theatrical and cinematic depictions from one hand, and the White policy toward the Native Women on the other. Method of Research This is a comparative study. It examines the stereotype of the Native Indian Women as represented in James Nelson Barker's The Indian Princess; or, La Belle Sauvage (1808), and The Walt Disney animated film Pocahontas (1995). The analysis of this comparative study will be based, mainly, on postcolonial theory in which the discussion will use concepts in colonial discourse like stereotyping and Othering. In postcolonial theory, "stereotype" refers to the highly generalized views of the colonizers about the colonized. According to Homi K. Bhabha, in his book The Location of Culture (1994), these views are mostly negative, debasing, humiliating, and based on a racial prejudiced view of the colonized people. He asserts the significance of "fixity as a concept whose key discursive strategy is the stereotypical views about the Natives" (370). The Native woman has been idealized or demonized as either Indian Princess, a modest maiden, the chief’s daughter (Pocahontas) or squaw, household drudge; the seductive (mixed-blood) mistress. Debra L. Merskin, in Media, Minorities, and Meaning: Acritical Introduction (2011) explains: The "Indian Princess" is portrayed as the Native beauty who is so infatuated with the White man, that she is willing to give up her cultural heritage and marry into the "civilized" White culture.

Notably, Alterra Mountain Company is considering changing the name of the Squaw Valley Ski Resort. In September of 2018, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names formally renamed Squaw Ridge on the northern border of the Mokelumne Wilderness in the Eldorado National Forest to Hungalelti Ridge, in consultation with the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, after the U.S. Forest Service policy said that the word “squaw” was derogatory and should no longer be used. The Squaw Valley Academy was recently renamed to Lake Tahoe Prep. In February 2019, the Squaw Valley Municipal Advisory Committee reported on the formal request from the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California asking that the name of County assets be changed from “Squaw Valley” to “Olympic Valley” because of the negative connotation of “squaw.” Minnesota, Montana, Maine, Oklahoma, Idaho, South Dakota, and Oregon have enacted laws to change the names of geographical features with the word “squaw” in them.

    Indian Princess and Roman Goddess: The First FeTuale Symbols of America JOHNHIGHAM KCAUSE America was bom in the mind of Europe, the marks ofthat origin have always been strong on the symbols B of its identity. The earliest allegorical images ofthe New World were almost wholly conventional reworkings of European memories: their patent lack of authenticity brings us today a shock of nonrecognition. Eventually, Americans themselves took charge of their symbols, which then acquired a more native inflection. In the long run, however, distinctiveness and separateness have been less pronounced in the visual language of American nationalism than we ordinarily suppose. None of the major embodiments of an American identity is understandable apart from its transatlantic origins, and none in its essential character has belonged to this country alone. The European invention of America occurred, of course, through symbols, and among the earliest were lines on a map. America had to be conceived as a place before it could acquire a ftirther meaning. Maps alone, however, are only empty diagrams.
