Until Dec 31 I KNOW YOU BY HEART: PORTRAIT MINIATURES. Museum, 1 Market Square. 9:00 am‐5:00 pm. Until 31 Dec 2012. The NBM is honored to be first to host this travelling exhibition, I Know You by Heart: Portrait Miniatures, organized and circulated by Library and Archives Canada (LAC). This exhibition features 35 miniatures, an oil painting loaned by the Musée national des beaux‐arts du Québec, and a five‐minute bilingual video. The exhibition showcases portraits with fascinating stories, notably that of Alice Walker, the portrait around which LAC built the branding for the exhibition, and of Demasduit, the only known portrait of a Beothuk person created from life. The NBM collection includes over 100 portrait miniatures dating from the mid‐18th century to the 1920s. The small selection of miniatures from the New Brunswick Museum collection chosen to accompany the LAC exhibition, I Know You by Heart: Portrait Miniatures, are works painted in the province, show New Brunswick citizens or were executed by New Brunswick artists. The display also includes archival material that relates directly to the sitters or artists of these portrait miniatures. Until Dec 31 TRIBUTARIES: DARREN EMENAU. New Brunswick Museum, 1 Market Square. 9:00 am‐5:00 pm. Until 31 Dec 2012. Part of the New Brunswick Museum’s Know Your Own Artist series, Tributaries celebrates the art of Darren Emenau. Darren Emenau, ceramist and sculptor, lives and works along a tributary of New Brunswick’s primary watercourse, the St. John River, and he scours the local landscape for both inspiration and raw materials. Among the exhibition’s components are several examples of the bricks scavenged from the shoreline. They can be appreciated as objets trouvés, or found art, worthy of aesthetic consideration. His suite, Resurfaced, contains bricks that have been enhanced with a wide variety of glazes and then re‐ fired. Emenau has also manufactured some of his own brick forms. Another work, Freshet, is an assemblage of natural elements – branches, twigs, dried leaves and straw – combined with carefully crafted ceramic cylinders or tubes with highly textured glazes. It celebrates the processes inherent in the annual flooding of the St. John River. The New Brunswick Museum is proud to recognize and support the creativity, diversity and quality of contemporary New Brunswick visual art through the Know Your Own Artists series.
