The Archdiocese of Miami Inventory SUMMARY Title: The Archdiocese of Miami Collection Dates: Circa 1940s – 2000s (bulk 1960 – 1980s) Extent: 25 full Hollinger boxes Access: This collection is open for research by appointment Cite As: The Archdiocese of Miami Collection, Archbishop John C. Favalora Archive & Museum, St. Thomas University Library, Miami Gardens, FL. Organization History: The collection contains materials from various events around the Catholic community. The Archdiocese started as the Diocese of Miami, on August 13, 1958, and it was composed of 51 parishes of 185,000 Catholics through South Florida. The first bishop was Coleman Francis Carroll, who was established in his position on October 7, 1958. The growth of the diocese was mostly due to the influx of Cuban refugees and exiles, and the Church recognized the need to offer them aid. These Charity Programs, led by Msgr. Bryan O. Walsh, welcomed and helped the refugees and their families out as they landed, whether separately or together. The Diocese soon became an Archdiocese, with Bishop Carroll as its first Archbishop. Archbishop Carroll’s successor, Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy, was a fierce advocate for the Haitian Community’s plea for asylum in the U.S. The Archdiocese quickly grew during this time, encompassing eight counties and serving 896,000 Catholics; it was also rated second for growth by the Kenedy Directory. By 1984, the Archdiocese was composed of three counties: Dade, Broward and Monroe, having given up counties such as Palm Beach and others to the new Dioceses of Palm Beach or Venice. In 1985, Archbishop McCarthy convoked the first Archdiocesan Synod. The Synod’s goal was to reinvigorate the Church for the community and to start thinking of the future. Its immediate plan was to learn who their community was, and how deep their religious devotions ran. Archbishop John Clement Favalora succeeded Archbishop McCarthy in 1994. He continued the tradition of welcoming Cubans and Haitians into South Florida, and started programs to teach English to the children of the refugees. By the 50th Anniversary in 2008, there were 118 parishes with 750,000 registered Catholics in the Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. Source: “History: 1958-2008.” The Archdiocese of Miami. There are various charities listed within, such as the Alcoholism Outreach Program, Drug Abuse programs, and also anniversaries, such as the Holy Year Anniversary and both the 25th and the 30th Anniversaries. The pictures come from various sources, most notably from the Catholic newspaper The Voice and from the Ana Rodriguez-Soto collection. Ms. Rodriguez-Soto was also the last editor of The Voice. The events depicted cover a wide time line range, but the bulk of the information stems from circa 1960 – the late 1980s period, covering the time when the Cuban refugees started arriving in South Florida and as they rebuilt their lives in Florida and beyond. Materials are mostly in English, with some captions in Spanish. Material types found through the collection: Photographs – prints, negatives. Most prints have captions on the back, but a few do not.
