WWW.THEFLORIDACATHOLIC.ORG | December 2014 FLORIDACatholic MIAMI ARCHDIOCESE At CHRISTMAS we are invited to approach the CHILD who awaits us in the manger. His hands are stretched forth, reaching out to us, seeking our embrace. He reaches out not to take anything from us but to give to us. To BELIEVE in him we lose nothing. On the contrary, we gain EVERYTHING. May Christmas find you and your loved ones reconciled to God and to one another. FLORIDA CATHOLIC STAFF MIAMI | Once again, student artwork graces the cover of the Christmas edition of the Florida Catholic. Fourth-grader Gabriela Barrera from St. Kevin School in Miami was the overall winner of the second annual Mission Kids Christmas Art Contest, co-sponsored by the offices of Missions, Catechesis and Schools. About 1,200 pieces of art were submitted by students from 27 schools and religious education programs through- out the archdiocese, making the task of choosing a winner very difficult for the judges. Among them was Father David Russell, a retired archdiocesan priest who is himself an art- ist, and representatives of the offices of Schools, Catechesis, Communications, and Evangelization and Parish Life. A winner and runner-up were chosen for each grade lev- el. The artwork of each one is reproduced here and will be posted on the archdiocesan website. All 1,200 entries also will be sent to the Pontifical Missions Society in New York for participation in their annual contest. Their winners’ art- Winner, grades five-six.
