S t a t e Of f i c e r s State Chaplain LET FREEDOM RING! Rev. Robert D. Fisher This year, our Order is 130 years old. Additionally, on August 12th of State Deputy this year, it will be the 160th birthday of our founder, Father Michael J. Roger G. Muller, Sr. McGivney. Why is this significant? The significance is that ONE man, State Secretary our founder, had a vision of having men unite as one. To be in unity with Charles K. Page their faith, to be united doing charitable works and united in the care of State Treasurer the widows and children of his time. Over these 130 years, we have James D. Caffrey grown to over 1.8 million men world-wide who continue to unite together State Advocate and make a difference. How? We take the lead. We take this lead and John J. Doherty stand united as one voice for our concerns and the concerns of others. We have been seen standing State Warden together to provide food, shelter and clothing to those in need or in times of disaster. We are seen Christopher J. Foley continuing to stand together as the voice of the unborn, the mentally handicapped and the aged. If Immediate Past State Deputy we are to continue with our founder’s vision then we must continue to be one. The theme from this Foster J. Sauter year’s Supreme Convention states it all, for in being united we can, “Proclaim Liberty throughout District Master the Land”. Claude A. Trujillo, Jr. Complacency! Now is not the time to be complacent while relying on others to step up or lead the way. Historically, we have had no problem with following; but we tend to let others lead. We St a t e La d i e s Au x i l i a r y let others step up to lead in our own councils. It is easy to say, “I do not have the time” or “I am too Of f i c e r s busy”. We will nonchalantly say “Let someone else take the lead” or “I will help if I can but I don’t President want to lead”. If it does not turn out well, it then becomes easy to criticize. This Fraternal Year has Sharon Hernandez been no different. Besides Councils finding a hard time with Brothers stepping up to lead, the state Vice President also has found it hard. It has been difficult to find Brothers to lead districts or programs. I know Barb Heumann that there is no doubt that most of us have many tasks on our plate. But if we really think about it, God only gives us that what he believes we can handle. If he is Treasurer placing this opportunity in front of you, don’t you think God believes that you will be able to handle Rose Higgs the task? Immediate Past President To those of you who, maybe apprehensively, have stepped up, I thank you for that. You have Dolly Castle stepped up and are assisting in growing our Order. To those who continue to stay in the shadows of being less involved, take that leap of faith, step up and answer God’s call to help grow our Order. Coo r d i n a t o r s Our growing Order will provide for us a united front that will surely help in our proclamation of liberty throughout the land in this time of consternation and debate. We find ourselves in the midst Executive Secretary of some trying times. We are bombarded by the words of many of our politicians who are urging us James VonFeldt to compromise our beliefs and our faith in the name of choice or equality. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” (Mark 10:43-45). As we begin to settle into a new Fraternal Year and our respective roles as newly elected, re-elected, appointed or re-appointed council, district and state officers, we’ve discovered our positions bestow on us certain specific authorities and duties. We are fully vested, through the Laws and Rules of the Order and our state and council bylaws, with the power to exercise the authorities of our offices. How we use that authority to guide, direct, mentor and serve those Knights and families who willingly follow us will testify to our ability as leaders. Much has been written about the theory, and to some extent, the practice of leadership and of those whom we perceive or recognize as great leaders. There are many traits of leadership, such as: honesty, competency, humility and courage to name a few. Leadership, like being a parent, isn’t about being a friend, popular or even being well-liked. It’s about mutual respect and more importantly, service to those entrusted to our care. In the verses from Mark’s Gospel, it is clear that Jesus calls us to lead through our service to others. Jesus calls us to be servant-leaders. Father McGivney, our venerable founder, left us the road-map on how to be a servant-leader. His legacy to us is the principle of Fraternalism with the challenge to live these principles in service to God and neighbor every day of our lives. The principles of: Charity, Unity and Fraternity embody every principle of leadership ever written about; and provide the simple prescription of how to serve others. As officers and leaders, the success of the Knights of Columbus depends upon how well we, as officers and servant-leaders, understand the Order’s principles and how effective we are in applying those principles in leading our councils, districts and state to achieve our Order’s fraternal and charitable missions. As officers, we should always be a calming influence against the rash judgments of those whose first impulse may be todisregardthe principle of due process and summarily suspend and expel members from the Order without affording their Brother Knight the opportunity to offer an explanation or to clear up any misunderstanding; or to otherwise resolve an issue in private. Sounds logical and fair in the abstract, however, the State Deputy, my brother state officers and I have seen these situations present themselves in our great state on more than one occasion. In several instances, we were confronted with the want to suspend or expel a Brother Knight or the relentless pursuit of allegations and charges against a Brother that broke the spirit of the councils and created a rift among the officers. Not only as officers, but more importantly as servant-leaders, we should not resort to formal disciplinary action unless all other reasonable attempts to resolve the situation have been exhausted. If, in the end, we are compelled to resort to disciplinary action, we must always observe the principle of due process. The need for disciplinary action should sadden instead of filling us with a sense of righteousness, for the loss of a Brother is the end-result. The use of the formal power and authority of our office is easy; using the power and authority for the greater good of our members and their families who willingly consent to follow us is more difficult, but is our duty as servant-leaders. A few weeks ago, the choir at Church sang the Servant Song. The first verse resonated with me and as Knights, officers and leaders, I pray that it resonates with all of us: “Will you let me be your servant; let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.” YMHSIC & Vivat Jesus Jay Doherty Jay Doherty State Advocate [email protected]

St a t e Me m b e r s h i p Re p o r t “Do n ’t b e a f r a i d t o c h a n g e ” Change: that is what I want to talk about this year. I believe that if you do what you’ve always done, you get what you always got. That means that if your council is stuck, your membership is stagnant, and you’re lucky to do one event in a year, you need to change. New ideas help revitalize a council. Some of these ideas are not going to work. That is ok. Don’t let the fear of failure keep you from trying something new. I would like to see every council in the state conduct a picnic on Saturday, August 12, in honor of Venerable Michael McGivney’s 160th birthday. You might even use this as a membership drive event at your parish. Supreme is keeping the goal of one member per council per month. Towards this goal you should be conducting a First Degree every month. I recently heard a council say that they could not do a First Degree ceremony unless that had at least 3 new members. This is absolutely wrong. What message does this send to these new potential brothers? The minimum number is 1. The State of Colorado will conduct a First, Second, or Third degree for as few as 1 member. These new brothers are that important. Officers Challenge: This is a membership challenge for the First Quarter. The intent is to have each officer in the State, District and the council recruit a new member by September 30th. If you need some ideas on how to do this, refer to your Action plan. Vivat Jesus, Jon Herskovits Jon Herskovits State Membership Coordinator [email protected]

NON-PARTISAN PARISH VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVES We have been asked by Supreme to be one of a handful of jurisdictions to participate in having voter registration drives in all parishes throughout the state of Colorado. We are hoping to partner with the Colorado Catholic Conference people in each diocese and with the approval of parish pastors, to proceed with a completely nonpartisan voter registration drive in each parish. This drive will be completely nonpartisan focusing solely on fulfilling one’s civic duty and being a faithful citizen. It is hoped to provide this service the 2nd weekend of September. Supreme will provide the posters to advertise this event. The nonpartisan nature of this campaign is in line with Catholic tradition as we do not tell people for whom to vote but rather that they should fulfill their civic duty to vote with an informed conscience. Please pay attention to upcoming notifications and information about this project through your District Deputy, Knights Call and Knights of Columbus e-mail blasts. No parents are perfect. There will be problems, but the important thing is to build mutual understanding with our children. Love must be evident when correction is necessary. It is a happy husband-wife relationship and their evident oneness in Christ that leads children toward faith in him and makes for a happy wholesome family life. Paul, writing to Timothy, gives the strongest possible admonition and warning to husbands and fathers, “if any provide not for his own and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel (1Timothy 5:8).” This provision need notbe confined to material things, but also time and energy and concern. I am so touched by the good works all of you do for your council, community, church youth and veterans. And we do this as a matter of course, without fanfare. Much like Jesus did when he extended his love and compassion to those who touched his spirit by their suffering and neediness. But even Jesus tells us to be the shining light in a world of darkness. He doesn’t want us to be braggarts, but how else will anyone know about our great works unless we tell them? When it comes to telling people who we are and what we do, Knights seem to be challenged. For example, anytime we involve our parish in an event, do we report One back the results and thank parishioners for their involvement? Do Night Only we report on our activities to our Pastor, whether he is a member in Colorado or not? Do we have a Communications Director in the council Springs! responsible for getting the word out? You might say, well, this is all too much. Can’t we just do our thing and be left alone. Of course. But to keep our councils vibrant and growing, we can’t stagnate. We have to be telling everyone we know who we are and what we do. Really, it’s not that difficult. If we are proud of who we are, it becomes automatic. For me, when I tell someone I am a member of the Knights of Columbus, they usually know right off the bat that I am Catholic. What comes next is unpredictable, but there is rarely a negative response. I usually try to explain the good things we do and [people are amazed. We have nothing to be ashamed of and everything to be proud of. Many of the stories I see coming through the newsletters are far more touching and down to earth than many of the stories on the media meant to tug at our heart strings. After months of praying and speculation, Brother Knight, Sir Knight, Archbishop Samuel Aquila was installed and welcomed as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Denver on July 18th. According to her article covering the celebration, Roxanne King, editor of the Denver Catholic Register, described the event as “a superb welcome home.” A joyous welcome filled the Basilica in Denver; Complete with trumpets, a 60-voice choir, colorful decorations, boisterous applause, 300 priests and deacons, 39 bishops, Cardinal Francis J. Stafford and US Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano. Of course, 20 members of the Denver area Honor Guard from 13 Assemblies added their dignity and color to the occasion, along with Knights of St. Peter Claver and Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher. Archbishop Samuel is the fifth Archbishop the Archdiocese of Denver. Brother Knight, Sir Knight, Bishop James Conley welcomed the packed Basilica by saying, “in 1976, Archbishop Aquila was ordained a priest in this very Cathedral. Today, we celebrate his priestly and apostolic ministry and rejoice in the great gift God has given us in calling him home to the Archdiocese of Denver.” In his homily, the Archbishop said to priests, “we must be willing to lay down our lives for our bride, the church.” To the laity, “You are in the world, not of the world, and to serve as leaven to the world.” At the great procession to exit, 200 members of the Neocatechumenal Way greeted the new Archbishop with an immense banner and played guitars and tambourines as they serenaded him with Flamenco- hymns. A new breath of fresh air has entered Colorado and it is a joyous breath! Sources for this Story courtesy of the Denver catholic Register and the Denver Post- Bruce Tawson, Editor. Responsibility b y Ka l e y Ma t o u s Today we live in a “working society”. Catholic citizens are finding it harder and harder to uphold their apostolic morals and values in their everyday jobs. It is each and every Catholic’s duty to be faithful and to act in order to defend our faith. Older generations have always and will continue to leave an impression on the younger generations of the . From the younger perspective, this impression has been taking a turn for the worse everyday. Many men and women have adopted the phrase, “stuck between a rock and a hard place”, explaining that employers are giving them decisions that force them to choose between the desired career and the faith they proclaim to live by. This excuse has become frequently repeated and is inexcusable. For example, in some hospitals today, the health boards are changing policies forcing nurses to learn and complete abortions whenever asked to do so in their clinics. These nurses must choose between killing an innocent child, which is against our Catholic faith, in order to preserve their career or stand up for their morals. Younger generations have become lazy and unattached to the real issues that are being born into our world. Returning to the abortion debate, many teens are uneducated to the extreme and horrible details that occur with aborting a baby. As a student about to enter college, aspiring to be a nurse, I was oblivious to the fact that I too will be faced with tough decisions concerning human life. I was unaware that challenges and issues that are addressed in the news, globally, could actually affect my everyday life in the future. I may experience hardships that will force me to choose between the faith I have devoted my heart to and being able to survive in this “working society”. The duty of the Catholic citizen in society today is simply to defend our faith. It is easy to defend our faith in our minds and in the church, but this task must be seen and firm throughout all of society. We cannot say we believe certain morals should be esteemed and then discard those morals when we are challenged in society, in careers especially. Employers will try to force activities and ideas on us that do not agree with our faith. We must be strong enough to say that we are willing to bet our jobs and our income, for the sole fact that our God is and will always provide for us if we know, love, and serve him. Going against our God and our morals can only stray us farther from the path that has been planned for us. Living in a free society is all the more reason for Catholic citizens to be pursuing and preaching our faith to others. The impression we leave on others will leave a bitter affect on people if we say we believe in specific morals and standards but never act on those qualities. We must defend and act on our faith in every chance possible, even in the most difficult and terrifying situations.

While working on a routine clearing operation with the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team and members of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, Capt. Glavey stepped on an IED, resulting in the traumatic amputations of his right leg above the knee, his left leg below the knee, and one of his fingers. Medically evacuated by helicopter, Capt. Glavey was treated at the field hospital at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, before being transported to Landstuhl, Germany. PJ arrived at Bethesda Naval Medical Center within days of his injuries and remained there for nearly eight months, enduring more than a dozen surgeries before being transferred to Balboa Naval Medical Center in San Diego, where he receives treatments and therapies at this time. The loss of limbs made it very difficult to maneuver around the typical house and left Capt. Glavey wondering about his future. In stepped “Homes for Our Troops,” an organization that builds homes suited for returning Veterans that are amputees. Recently, his lovely home was finished in Brighton, CO and he and his fiancé are thrilled. Now they could be part of a normal American neighborhood! Knights of Columbus Councils 7502, 6257, 13131, 3285, 2616 and 2392 found out about the project and immediately jumped in to help. They assisted by providing food and refreshments for the volunteer workers and even pounded a few nails themselves. Knights joined in signing studs which were used in the construction of the house so PJ would always have their best wishes built right into the house. TEAM Together Everyone Achieves More July 2012 Dear Knights & Ladies, Simple things in Life

Appreciate Beauty. Look at people, plants, gadgets and even buildings and take a moment to appreciate what makes them so special.

Connect With Nature. Nature is an amazing healer for the stresses and strains of modern life. Eating lunch in the park, attending to a vegetable garden in your backyard, or watching the sunset.

Laugh E. E. Cummings once said “the most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” How very true. Never be too busy to laugh, or too serious to smile. Surround yourself with fun people and don’t get caught up in your own sense of importance.

Have Simple Pleasures. A good cup of coffee or tea when you first wake. Cooking a nice meal in the evening. These may not seem terribly exciting, but they are some of the simple pleasures If you slow down for just a moment and take the time to appreciate these ordinary events, life becomes instantly more enjoyable.

Connect With People. In so many ways, it is our relationships with people that give us the most happiness in life. Taking people for who they are and not finding fault.

Learn. There is a strong link between learning and happiness. Given this, there is no excuse not to be stimulating your brain and learning something new each day.

Rethink Your Mornings and Evenings. Are the mornings a mad rush for you to get out the door? Do you switch off the TV at night and go straight to bed? I have personally experienced the profound benefits of establishing a routine in the morning and evening. For example, in the morning you may choose to wake an hour earlier and spend the time working on yourself, whether it be reading, writing or exercising. In the evening, consider spending some time just before bed reviewing your day or in meditation.

Celebrate Your Successes. During a normal day we are sure to have some minor successes. Perhaps you have successfully dealt with a difficult people, received a nice compliment. These aren’t events worth throwing a party for, but why not take a moment to celebrate your success? Share the experience with someone else, reward yourself with a nice lunch, or just give yourself a mental pat on the back.

I took a class and found how true these things are so, I thought I would share.

GET READY TO VOTE! All civic responsibility starts in the home; children learn what they are taught by the adults in their home. As a nation we are preparing for elections in November and it is never too early to start engaging your family in preparing to vote. There are many incredible resources available to families with children of all ages to start the preparation for what it means to be a responsible citizen and Catholic. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) offer many important suggestions and resourc- es to help all families start to talk about civic responsibility and the importance of voting. Below please find links to several of the resources mentioned above.
