Motorsport Information FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Rally Spain Volkswagen are World Champions* – manufacturers’ title following one-two victory in Spain Wolfsburg (27 October 2013). Part two of the World Champions’ story: Volkswagen has won the manufacturers’ title in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with an outstanding one-two victory at the Rally Spain. That means all the WRC titles* for 2013 will go to the car maker from Wolfsburg. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) claimed the Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ crown three weeks ago at the Rally France. The French duo went on to score an impressive win – their eighth this season – ahead of their team-mates Jari- Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) at the “Rally de España”. As a result, Volkswagen has an unassailable lead in the Manufacturers’ Championship with one round still to go this season. Winning three titles in its debut year with the Polo R WRC is Volkswagen’s greatest motorsport achievement to date. Title wins that will go down in history – Volkswagen’s debut Volkswagen’s achievements in the 2013 WRC season are unparalleled. The German team clinched all of the titles in the top category of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in its debut year – the Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ Championship and the manufacturers’ trophy. No other manufacturer has managed to win a World Championship in its first year since the World Rally Championship began. Even in the history of Formula 1, no car maker has yet taken the title in its opening season through their own efforts. Volkswagen’s performance has exceeded all expectations.

Kajetan Kajetanowicz/Maciej Szczepaniak (POL/POL) won WRC3 in LOTOS Rally Team’s ŠKODA FABIA Rally2 evo followed by Emil Lindholm/Mikael Korhonen (FIN/FIN) in a similar car from Toksport WRT. The two crews of ŠKODA Motorsport supported team Toksport WRT in WRC2, Marco Bulacia/Marcelo Der Ohannesian (BOL/ARG) and Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (NOR/NOR), reached the finish after 20 stages covering 300.32 kilometres in category third and fifth respectively. One phenomenon is common to tarmac rallies: By cutting the corners, the competitors drag stones and sand onto the roads, each car leaving the racing line increasingly slippery. The first ever FIA World Rally Championship event in Croatia especially lived up to this reputation, the gravel polluted corners causing numerous spins and offs.

Rally Sweden will be the second event for the New Generation i20 WRC and a second different surface. We have tested on snow back in December and again last week with the new car and it’s gone well with no major issues. The drivers have been happy too; they’ve found good set-ups for the differential and the dampers so I think they are all quite confident. Thierry finished second in Sweden last year in the 2015 car but the drivers say that the New Generation i20 WRC feels even better. The car is a bit longer so it should be more stable on fast sections of road like you get in Sweden. We believe we have gained a bit of traction too, which is important on a low-grip surface like snow. In Sweden the car runs on gravel specification but there are specific details you can prepare for this event. You don’t want to get too much snow in the car because it adds extra weight so you have to make sure it is well sealed, inside the wheel arches and underneath the car. Also, because of the cold temperatures we don’t have to cool down the car as much as usual so we’ll use a different radiator.
