Typical timetable: 1. 2 lectures (general + instructions) 2. lunch 3. hands on exercises at computers with LHC/LEP data 4. video conference with CERN and other groups about 2500 high school students participated since 2004 QuarkNet Workshop for Polish Teachers (Warsaw, June 13-15, 2008) teachers made and tested cosmic ray detectors Teacher©s trainings at CERN April 2007 visit: Teacher©s trainings at CERN (cont.) Organiser: Dr. Jerzy Jarosz, University of Silesia. The 1st group of 43 teachers from whole Poland went to CERN in April 2007. Then at least one group of teachers per year visited CERN for one week training (in Polish). From 2008 additionally one group/year of academic teachers visited CERN. Since 2010 academic and school teacher groups are mixed. Total: 6 school teacher groups 4 academic teacher groups During 2007 ± 2009 the government agency - CODN organised 7 teachers visits to CERN for one week training (in Polish) Teacher©s trainings at CERN (cont.) Some teacher groups organised by Dr. J. Jarosz (University of Silesia) were accompanied by journalist. Radio Katowice journalists made several life broadcasts from CERN over one week visit, and other materials were periodically emitted during next two weeks. The TV3 journalists made: ●coverage of teachers visit for news, ●one program about LHC and CERN for outreach periodical program ªCogitoº (many emissions), ●film ªBig Bangº about LHC and CERN emitted in the TV1 (first channel), and which got to the final of the Science Films Festival in Sopot. There are articles in local newspapers after each visit, and in educational Polish periodicals (Fizyka w Szkole, Foton). Teacher©s trainings at CERN (cont.) high school student groups visits at CERN Sometimes teachers who had visited CERN organised excursions with their pupils. I do not know all such events. I know one case of 2 excursions with high school students to CERN organised by one teacher (Mrs. Irena Bøaszkowska ± Tomaszów Maz.) one year after another. Photo: high school students with their teacher from Radom at CERN radio and TV programs (very broad ªtargetº) weekly (Wednesday evenings) program in country wide radio (TOK FM) by Prof. Krzysztof Meissner about particle physics, astrophysics, astroparticle physics or current hot related topics (there is some feedback from XXX). Occasionally TV interview (during news or longer programs) by Prof. Krzysztof Meissner or Dr. Stanisøaw Bajtlik about physics, astrophysics, cosmology, astronomy (usually large feedback). Outreach:Outreach: politicianspoliticians Polish politician VIPs at CERN, eg.: ● The President Lech Kaczyński (2009), ● Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak (2011), ● Deputy Science Ministers: Jerzy Duszyński (2008), Jerzy Szwed(2010), Maciej Banach (2011), ● Deputy Minister of Economy responsible for nuclear energy ± Hanna Trojanowska (2011) visits are always reported by country wide media including TV news. Organisation of outreach in Poland Outreach is organised locally (organisers from one institute or from one town) ● Travelling exhibition ªLHC ± how does it works ?º had significant financial support, ● Science Festivals and Science Picnics have some support. ● Most of activities are supported by organisers institutes (very limited support) ● Teachers excursions to CERN are paid by participating teachers themselves (sometimes with individual support of local authorities), and the courses are supported by CERN Summary All actions are very positive and very efficient Some organisation of outreach on country level might help ● with financing events (but institutional organisation costs, as well), ● to hire people dedicated to do outreach events, ● to increase outreach skills (some trainings for scientists). .
