From the Reformation to the Thirty Years War, 1500-1648 Rebels and Ottomans – The Habsburg Monarchy Makes Peace (1606) War and peace between the Ottoman sultans and the Holy Roman emperors was a major strand of Imperial history from the Ottomans’ first invasion of Hungary in 1526 to their decisive defeat at Imperial hands in Vienna in 1683. In contested Hungary, there were alternating periods of serious campaigning (1526-47, 1593-1606, 1663-83) and long, negotiated truces (1547-93, 1606-63). In its early phase, this contest played a significant role in the Protestant Reformation, for it provided the Protestant princes with a tactic that became a policy: no taxes without concessions on religion. During the next decades, some saw the Ottoman threat as a more or less welcome Habsburg problem, others as a threat to the Empire. Financial and symbolic goods played an important role in this rhythm. For example, the peace of 1547, which was renewed in 1562 and 1590, contained passages in which the Holy Roman emperor acknowledged the Ottoman overlordship of Hungary and agreed to pay the sultans 30,000 Venetian ducats per year in tribute. Between major campaigns, the respective positions were held by two heavily fortified systems of defense. On the Habsburg side, the defensive line was called “the military frontier” and was manned by Croats, Vlachs, and Serbs who were both free farmers and resident warriors. Trading across the frontier was a reality, but so were raids in strength, which sometimes presaged major outbreaks of all-out war. One such incident occurred in 1592, when Emperor Rudolph II sent a large force to the front and helped spark the so-called Long War. -

Binder ID Chair of Cultural Studies, Andrássy University, Pollack Mihály tér 3, 1088 Budapest, Hungary; [email protected] Received: 7 July 2017; Accepted: 21 August 2017; Published: 29 August 2017 Abstract: This paper aims to outline the specific Habsburg character of Austrian Catholicism through a study of Pietas Austriaca, the supposed Habsburg tradition of Catholic piety, and its role in the First and Second Austrian Republics. It analyzes the narrative of Austrian history presented by the Heldendenkmal, or Heroes’ Monument, which was erected in Vienna in 1934. Further, it argues that Pietas Austriaca was linked in the postwar period to a notion of Heimat (Home, Homeland) and served the needs of Austrian political Catholicism, which was seeking to recruit former National Socialists. Keywords: Habsburg; Austria; empire; Catholicism; Pietas Austriaca; Christian Social Party; Austrian People’s Party; Heimat; Heldendenkmal Political Catholicism utilised its commitment to the concept of Pietas Austriaca to define its political position towards both Social Democratic Austro-Marxism and National Socialism. After 1945, the Roman Catholic Church served as a vehicle for the denazification of former National Socialists. By creating the “Heimat”, it endeavoured to establish a common front against Social Democracy in order to implement a masked bourgeois bloc. Ultimately, this would to some extent explain the rise of the Austrian Freedom Party from 1986 on. “The Pietas Austriaca, i.e., Austrian piety—referring here to Austria as Casa d’Austria, i.e., the House of Austria, and not as a geopolitical entity—was propagated in the Baroque era as the most fundamental virtue of the Habsburg dynasty. -

This situation has made the search for a single Austro-Hungarian identity so difficult that many historians have declared it impossible. Yet the Dual Monarchy possessed one potentially unifying cultural aspect that has long been critically neglected: the extensive repertoire of marches and patriotic music performed by the military bands of the Imperial and Royal Austro- Hungarian Army. This Militärmusik actively blended idioms representing the various nationalist musics from around the empire in an attempt to reflect and even celebrate its multinational makeup. -

Criterion (iv): Three key periods of European cultural and political development - the Middle Ages, the Baroque period, and the Gründerzeit - are exceptionally well illustrated by the urban and architectural heritage of the Historic Centre of Vienna. Criterion (vi): Since the 16th century Vienna has been universally acknowledged to be the musical capital of Europe. While taking note of the efforts already made for the protection of the historic town of Vienna, the Committee recommended that the State Party undertake the necessary measures to review the height and volume of the proposed new development near the Stadtpark, east of the Ringstrasse, so as not to impair the visual integrity of the historic town. Furthermore, the Committee recommended that special attention be given to continuous monitoring and control of any changes to the morphology of the historic building stock. HISTORY OF BUDAPEST Budapest, the capital of the Hungarian People's Republic, lies in the Carpathian Basin, at latitude 47°28' north and longitude 19°08' east. The Danube is one of the most important waterways of Europe. A 28-km stretch of the River Danube divides Buda on the right bank from Pest on the left. Buda is built on a number of hills, with its highest point 529 m. above sea level. Pest lies on level ground that forms part of the Great Hungarian Plain. The Danube at Budapest is a busy waterway, varying in width from 300 to 600 m. and enclosing five islands, of which Csepel in the south of the city is the largest. The city has several medicinal springs, some thermal. Budapest is today the second most populous city in central Europe. Its 2,089,533 inhabitants in 1978 made up 19,6% of Hungary's population and included 27,8% of the country's industrial workforce. The city's area is 525.20 sq.km., two-thirds of which are on the Pest side of the river. The development plan approved by the Hungarian Council of Ministers in 1971 regards 44 communities outside the city boundaries as parts of the Budapest conurbation. Archaeological discoveries confirm that there have been important settlements on the site of present-day Budapest for thousands of years. Celtic tribes settled on both banks of the Danube in the 3rd century BC. After the conquest of Pannonia, the Romans in the last decades BC built the town of Aquincum on the site of the Celtic settlement of Ak-ink, on the right bank of the river. -

The story of an archduke from the imperial and royal family of Habsburg-Lorraine accepting the invitation of the French Emperor to occupy the throne of a country that is 10 000 kilometres away from his home could be the object-lesson of great powers playing. The aim of the study is to give an insight in this short moment of Mexico’s history and to show a picture of Hungarian soldiers fighting on Latin American soil. 1 GROTIUS – KÖZLEMÉNYEK Historical Background The first half of the nineteenth century started really eventfully for Mexico. The 1910s were spent achieving independence, the subsequent decade brought a short-lived empire and then major territorial losses in due course followed by instability, which further weakened the young state. The situation was still aggravated by the war fought against the USA between 1846 and 1848. In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the two-year war Mexico lost one third of its territory: Texas, furthermore the bigger part of California, Arizona and New-Mexico. In the fifties the policy of consolidation of the Amerindian (Zapotec) president Benito Juarez ensued, which is remembered by the public under the name of La Reforma1. , it was impossible for his reforms to result in significant changes in the little time at his disposal and they only contributed to the stability of the country to a limited extent. -

EUROPEAN ELITES AND IDEAS OF EMPIRE, 1917–1957 Who thought of Europe as a community before its economic integra- tion in 1957? Dina Gusejnova illustrates how a supranational European mentality was forged from depleted imperial identities. In the revolutions of 1917–1920, the power of the Hohenzollern, Habsburg, and Romanoff dynasties over their subjects expired. Even though Germany lost its credit as a world power twice in that century, in the global cultural memory, the old Germanic families remained associated with the idea of Europe in areas reaching from Mexico to the Baltic region and India. Gusejnova’s book sheds light on a group of German-speaking intellectuals of aristocratic origin who became pioneers of Europe’s future regeneration. When Franz Joseph dissolved the Hungarian parliament on December 10 1868, Ferencz Deák and the majority in the House of Representatives could look back with satisfaction on the preceding three years. Deák and his party had reached a constitutional settlement with the Crown that had been enacted as Law XII of 1867. Through the Settlement Hungary, with which Transylvania and Croatia were united, had acquired internal self-government and limited influence in imperial affairs. The government was headed by the imaginative and entertaining Count Gyula Andrássy, a charmer whom Deák called the ‘providential man’1 because he possessed the rare quality of being equally acceptable to Vienna and to his own country. The government and its parlia- mentary supporters hoped that, with the Settlement out of the way, concerns about Hungary’s position within the Empire would lose their hold over politics.
