ON CREATIVITY AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE SUPRANATIONAL STATE Barry SMITH and Wolfgang GRASSL Summary Building on the writings of Wittgenstein on rule-following and deviance, Kristóf Nyíri advanced a theory of creativity as consisting in a fusion of conflicting rules or disciplines. Only such fusion can produce something that is both intrinsically new and yet capable of being apprehended by and passed on to a wider community. Creativity, on this view, involves not the breaking of rules, or the deliberate cultivation of deviant social habits, but rather the acceptance of enriched systems of rules, the adherence to which presupposes simultaneous immersion in disciplines hitherto seen as being unrelated. The paper presents a demonstration of the fruitfulness of this theory by means of an account of some of the political, cultural and intellectual peculiarities of the Habsburg Monarchy. Philosophers of various persuasions have at different times attempted to pin down the nature and peculiarities of large-scale social and political formations. The Greeks concerned themselves with the peculiarities of monarchies, republics, oligarchies, and of course with the nature of the polis, and German thinkers worried themselves philo- sophically about the oppositions of culture and civilization, society and community, nation and state. Philosophical consideration of supranational or imperial orders, in contrast, and in particular of that imperial order which was variously called Austria-Hungary, the Austrian Empire, the Habsburg Empire, or the Danube Monarchy, has been much less common. And where it has occurred it has been associated with a marked lack of sympathy and enthusiasm, often taking on the form of a mere apologia for something which, in a better world, would be more properly organized. -

From the Reformation to the Thirty Years War, 1500-1648 Rebels and Ottomans – The Habsburg Monarchy Makes Peace (1606) War and peace between the Ottoman sultans and the Holy Roman emperors was a major strand of Imperial history from the Ottomans’ first invasion of Hungary in 1526 to their decisive defeat at Imperial hands in Vienna in 1683. In contested Hungary, there were alternating periods of serious campaigning (1526-47, 1593-1606, 1663-83) and long, negotiated truces (1547-93, 1606-63). In its early phase, this contest played a significant role in the Protestant Reformation, for it provided the Protestant princes with a tactic that became a policy: no taxes without concessions on religion. During the next decades, some saw the Ottoman threat as a more or less welcome Habsburg problem, others as a threat to the Empire. Financial and symbolic goods played an important role in this rhythm. For example, the peace of 1547, which was renewed in 1562 and 1590, contained passages in which the Holy Roman emperor acknowledged the Ottoman overlordship of Hungary and agreed to pay the sultans 30,000 Venetian ducats per year in tribute. Between major campaigns, the respective positions were held by two heavily fortified systems of defense. On the Habsburg side, the defensive line was called “the military frontier” and was manned by Croats, Vlachs, and Serbs who were both free farmers and resident warriors. Trading across the frontier was a reality, but so were raids in strength, which sometimes presaged major outbreaks of all-out war. One such incident occurred in 1592, when Emperor Rudolph II sent a large force to the front and helped spark the so-called Long War. -

One of them was to make my 2006 publication Rise Up! The 1956 Hungarian Revolution – A People’s Sacrifice available digitally online. The original hard copy was produced in black and white, so I thought it was about time to give it a little clean-up and present the material in colour. A decade-and-a-half ago I spent a year going over it with a fine-toothed comb, and reading it again now, I still feel that it is a good publication with a unique and useful perspective, however, my main reason for carrying on with its digitalization is because I think it’s still relevant. The nature of historical study, I believe, is that it is a science that is inherently incomplete – going over it regularly and viewing it from other angles can often yield more in-depth knowledge. I hope that readers will always find this publication worthy of discussion and criticism, and perhaps even note that it is a document that also contains something useful between the lines. The new version will be available for downloading on our website. MAGYAR FRONT This issue of the Magyar Front contains two articles from that publication with some VOLUME XXII, ISSUE 4 new material which I think will please the history buff and collector, and I thank Ágnes FALL 2020 Makai again for her excellent article on the badge of the National Guard. -

Binder ID Chair of Cultural Studies, Andrássy University, Pollack Mihály tér 3, 1088 Budapest, Hungary; [email protected] Received: 7 July 2017; Accepted: 21 August 2017; Published: 29 August 2017 Abstract: This paper aims to outline the specific Habsburg character of Austrian Catholicism through a study of Pietas Austriaca, the supposed Habsburg tradition of Catholic piety, and its role in the First and Second Austrian Republics. It analyzes the narrative of Austrian history presented by the Heldendenkmal, or Heroes’ Monument, which was erected in Vienna in 1934. Further, it argues that Pietas Austriaca was linked in the postwar period to a notion of Heimat (Home, Homeland) and served the needs of Austrian political Catholicism, which was seeking to recruit former National Socialists. Keywords: Habsburg; Austria; empire; Catholicism; Pietas Austriaca; Christian Social Party; Austrian People’s Party; Heimat; Heldendenkmal Political Catholicism utilised its commitment to the concept of Pietas Austriaca to define its political position towards both Social Democratic Austro-Marxism and National Socialism. After 1945, the Roman Catholic Church served as a vehicle for the denazification of former National Socialists. By creating the “Heimat”, it endeavoured to establish a common front against Social Democracy in order to implement a masked bourgeois bloc. Ultimately, this would to some extent explain the rise of the Austrian Freedom Party from 1986 on. “The Pietas Austriaca, i.e., Austrian piety—referring here to Austria as Casa d’Austria, i.e., the House of Austria, and not as a geopolitical entity—was propagated in the Baroque era as the most fundamental virtue of the Habsburg dynasty. -

This situation has made the search for a single Austro-Hungarian identity so difficult that many historians have declared it impossible. Yet the Dual Monarchy possessed one potentially unifying cultural aspect that has long been critically neglected: the extensive repertoire of marches and patriotic music performed by the military bands of the Imperial and Royal Austro- Hungarian Army. Music of Minorities in Austria – A “National Heritage”? Ursula Hemetek, Institut für Volksmusikforschung, University of Vienna, Austria Introduction The above piece is Jutro rano, a traditional love song of the Burgenland Croats, one of the minorities in Austria. In it, a young man sings in front of his beloved’s window. When sung, the melody indeed sounds very Austrian, at least from the historical perspective, because its first part has been used in the Imperial Anthem composed by Joseph Haydn in 1797 for the Austrian Emperor Franz II: “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser.” I use this song to underline the aspect of “national heritage,” for if any music can be interpreted as national, which I generally doubt, it might be anthems. This anthem served until 1918, and the melody has been used since then in several occasions. It also definitely has a strong connection with an Austrian minority of today, the Burgenland Croats mentioned above. Joseph Haydn lived in that part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, today known as the Burgenland, where Croats, Hungarians, Gypsies, Slovaks, and Jews also lived. And of course he was inspired by those musical surroundings. Up to the present day this most eastern region of Austria remains very multicultural. An obvious question in connection with the anthem’s melody is: Who used the melody first, Joseph Haydn or the Croats; who borrowed from whom? This question is the subject of an ongoing debate, and arguments on both sides are convincing. But I do not think it is important at all. Joseph Haydn lived in truly multicultural surroundings, which of course inspired him, and he composed in the tradition of the Wiener Klassik, a style in which we find many elements of traditional music. -

Criterion (iv): Three key periods of European cultural and political development - the Middle Ages, the Baroque period, and the Gründerzeit - are exceptionally well illustrated by the urban and architectural heritage of the Historic Centre of Vienna. Criterion (vi): Since the 16th century Vienna has been universally acknowledged to be the musical capital of Europe.
