Purposeful Polysemy in Marketing Communication: Ethical Implications and Policy Challenges
Purposeful Polysemy in Marketing Communication: Ethical Implications and Policy Challenges by Rumaila Abbas A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Management Guelph, Ontario, Canada ©Rumaila Abbas, December, 2018 ABSTRACT PURPOSEFUL POLYSEMY IN MARKETING COMMUNICATION: ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS AND POLICY CHALLENGES Rumaila Abbas Advisor(s): University of Guelph, 2018 Dr. Timothy Dewhirst Past research has identified purposeful polysemy (i.e., multiple meanings in interpretation) as a strategy that enables various marketing goals to be achieved. However, an area that extant literature has largely been silent about is when polysemy can be strategically used to overcome legal boundaries. This research examines purposeful polysemy, as a practice used in varying product sectors (i.e., food, beverage, and tobacco), and explores the consumer, ethical, and policy implications that emerge from its use. This research explores whether marketers, through using verbal and visual devices, can imply multiple meanings, where one meaning pertains to a brand message (e.g., inferring a health-oriented attribute) that is navigating within a stringent regulatory environment, while additional meanings can be used as a legal and ethical defense if undergoing scrutiny for the claim being made. This thesis is organized into three separate manuscripts that have the overarching goal of examining purposeful polysemy and its potential to circumvent the spirit of policy. The first manuscript sets up a conceptual framework and uses a well established image (i.e., a heart symbol) as a demonstration of polysemy. Using a semiological and rhetorical approach, this manuscript further delves into the ethics of using such a marketing tool. -

Re-Branding a Nation Online: Discourses on Polish Nationalism and Patriotism
Re-Branding a Nation Online Re-Branding a Nation Online Discourses on Polish Nationalism and Patriotism Magdalena Kania-Lundholm Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Sal IX, Universitets- huset, Uppsala, Friday, October 26, 2012 at 10:15 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The examination will be conducted in English. Abstract Kania-Lundholm, M. 2012. Re-Branding A Nation Online: Discourses on Polish Nationalism and Patriotism. Sociologiska institutionen. 258 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 978-91-506-2302-4. The aim of this dissertation is two-fold. First, the discussion seeks to understand the concepts of nationalism and patriotism and how they relate to one another. In respect to the more criti- cal literature concerning nationalism, it asks whether these two concepts are as different as is sometimes assumed. Furthermore, by problematizing nation-branding as an “updated” form of nationalism, it seeks to understand whether we are facing the possible emergence of a new type of nationalism. Second, the study endeavors to discursively analyze the ”bottom-up” processes of national reproduction and re-definition in an online, post-socialist context through an empirical examination of the online debate and polemic about the new Polish patriotism. The dissertation argues that approaching nationalism as a broad phenomenon and ideology which operates discursively is helpful for understanding patriotism as an element of the na- tionalist rhetoric that can be employed to study national unity, sameness, and difference. Emphasizing patriotism within the Central European context as neither an alternative to nor as a type of nationalism may make it possible to explain the popularity and continuous endur- ance of nationalism and of practices of national identification in different and changing con- texts. -

Youth Encouraged to Work Hard for Success IT Doesn’T Matter Where You Come From, Confidence Ceremony Held by the Conference Scheduled for Trinidad and Pandemic”
Established October 1895 Spencer breaks silence on resignation PAGE 3 Friday July 10, 2020 $2 VAT Inclusive ‘REMAINMINISTER of Home Affairs, VIGILANT’ Edmund Hinkson, has urged Barbadians to be vigilant as the peak of the hurricane season has yet to arrive. Speaking to the media recently at a press briefing regarding the new traffic lights at the Westmoreland junction, Minister Hinkson also used the time to encourage Barbadians to be prepared for the hurricane season. “The reality is that we are very far from the height of the season and that Barbadians and residents must remain vigilant as to what can happen and nothing beats preparation,” stated Hinkson. The minister highlighted that for the first time, Barbados would be preparing for the season in the midst of a global pandemic. He explained that the current administration, through the National Advisory Committee, has been making preparations for the hurricane season and the committee has met five times over the last six weeks. “We would have met with social welfare, whose responsibility it is to ensure that people are protected socially, the most vulnerable. We have been involved with the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure that there will be food supplies to each area of Barbados in the event that any district in Barbados is cut off and that there would be sufficient food channelled to that area,” explained the minister. Hinkson also mentioned meetings with the Housing Ministry where stronger arrangements were made for the supply of building material, if there is a need for swift repairs for the houses of any residents impacted. -
