Annual Report ANNUAL REPORT emv board of directors: emv staff & consultants: Fran Watters President Matthew White Executive & Artistic Director Johanna Shapira Vice President Nathan Lorch Business Manager Ron Kruschen Treasurer Jonathan Evans Production Manager Ilia Korkh Secretary Michelle Herrewynen Resource Development Manager Chris Guzy Past President Laina Tanahara Marketing & Volunteer Manager Murray Paterson Marketing Group (MPMG) Board Members: Trevor Mangion & The Chan Centre Box Office Ticketing Colleen Dixon, Sherrill E. Grace, Delma Hemming, Debi Wong Project Coordinator – Innovative Collaborations Tony Knox, Melody Mason, Andrew Szeri, Vincent Tan Jan Gates Event Photographer José Verstappen Artistic Director Emeritus A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The first half of EMV’s 50th anniversary season was a fitting tribute to just how far this organization has come in building the trust of our audience over the years. That we were able to attract big crowds to Henry Purcell’s awe inspiring, but not widely known, "Hail Bright Cecilia", Benjamin Bagby’s epic telling of "Beowulf", and our Festive Cantatas program of music for early winds and voices by Giovanni Gabrieli is testament to what an ongoing commitment to excellence can achieve. When the news came in March 2020 that EMV would have to cancel the rest of our season, as well as put off the announcement of what was to be a hugely ambitious 51st season, our whole team went into overdrive. In a matter of weeks, we had several exciting, innovative, and financially viable artistic projects including A Musical Offering, EMV’s Summer School, Music for the Pause (in collaboration with Early Music Society of the Islands, Victoria Baroque, and Christ Church Cathedral Victoria), and a digital concert hall season featuring over twenty, hour-long programs featuring some of Canada’s finest performers. Hosted by Bill Richardson, this series is already receiving international attention and has become a national benchmark for what is possible with the new digital tools available to us. The speed and competence with which the EMV Staff and Board were able to pivot so that we could continue working at our mission to engage, enrich, and educate was yet another demonstration of just how special an organization this has become. Despite the negative impact of the pandemic to earned revenue, with the help of our generous supporters, as well as of the Canadian government, EMV has been able to balance the books and keep the organization financially stable while also providing more work to BC artists than ever before. It was hugely comforting to know that despite not having access to many of the international artists with whom we work regularly, that we were still able to create a world class season featuring the gifted artists we have living right here on the West Coast. Though we are not sure what comes next, I can say with total confidence that thanks to our flexible organizational model, excellent financial management, and our ongoing commitment to superlative musical standards, EMV will be, as usual, first out of the gate when we are given the green light to get back to live performances in front of “in person” audiences. I have left EMV for the Victoria Symphony as of September 2020, but EMV will always be special for me. Being a part of the evolution and growth of this organization over the last eight years has been a huge privilege. I am going to miss the imminent sense of possibility and openness to change and experimentation that I feel pervades the culture of the organization and hope that it stays this way forever! EMV’s staff, board, volunteers and audience have all become like family to me and I promise to stay in touch with everyone. All the very best to you all. • NIKOLAI KORNDORF: a BRIEF INTRODUCTION by Martin Anderson Nikolai Korndorf Had a Clear Image of What Kind of a Composer He Was
Explore Unknown Music with the Toccata Discovery Club Since you’re reading this booklet, you’re obviously someone who likes to explore music more widely than the mainstream offerings of most other labels allow. Toccata Classics was set up explicitly to release recordings of music – from the Renaissance to the present day – that the microphones have been ignoring. How often have you heard a piece of music you didn’t know and wondered why it hadn’t been recorded before? Well, Toccata Classics aims to bring this kind of neglected treasure to the public waiting for the chance to hear it – from the major musical centres and from less-well-known cultures in northern and eastern Europe, from all the Americas, and from further afield: basically, if it’s good music and it hasn’t yet been recorded, Toccata Classics will be exploring it. To link label and listener directly we have launched the Toccata Discovery Club, which brings its members substantial discounts on all Toccata Classics recordings, whether CDs or downloads, and also on the range of pioneering books on music published by its sister company, Toccata Press. A modest annual membership fee brings you two free CDs when you join (so you are saving from the start) and opens up the entire Toccata Classics catalogue to you, both new recordings and existing releases. Frequent special offers bring further discounts. If you are interested in joining, please visit the Toccata Classics website at www.toccataclassics.com and click on the ‘Discovery Club’ tab for more details. 8 TOCC 0128 Korndorf.indd 1 26/03/2012 17:30 NIKOLAI KORNDORF: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION by Martin Anderson Nikolai Korndorf had a clear image of what kind of a composer he was.

The Bulgarian-Canadian Society of British Columbia congratulates all Bulgarians on the occasion of Mays 24, the Day of the Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture, and of the Slavonic Alphabet! One of the most exciting holidays of our people, this day in the beautiful month of May fills us every year with a grandiose sense of pride, patriotism, and national dignity. It gives us a feeling of enlightenment and hope for spiritual strength, for light and uplifting in harmony with the unique colors and happy sounds of spring. Man and nature look up to new heights and start dreaming of something endless, magnetic, and stronger than themselves. Nature turns to the sun, and we turn to the inner light in our lives – speech, knowledge, science, and culture. Let us have a happy holiday and let this magnificent day continue to charge us with energy, love for the word, faith in its strenghth and intuition how we can use it to make our days brighter and worthier. Ivelina Tchizmarova, Ph.D. Director in the Bulgarian-Canadian Society of British Columbia and editor in chief of the BCSBC Newsletter Successful Bulgarians in Vancouver: Anna Levy – a piano player, a teacher, and a patriot The first impression Anna Levy leaves in people is “genuine, warm, down-to-earth”. Before one knows her, one may think that musicians of her caliber are more haughty and inaccessible, but I did not find anything of this stereotype in the Bulgarian virtuoso.

P NIKOLAI KORNDORF: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION by Martin Anderson Nikolai Korndorf had a clear image of what kind of a composer he was. In a ‘Brief Statement about my Work’ he wrote: I belong to the direction in Russian music which, independent of the composer’s style, typically addresses very serious topics: philosophical, religious, moral, the problems of a person’s spiritual life, his relationship with the surrounding world, the problem of beauty and its relationship with reality, as well as the problem of lotiness and meaning in human beings and in art, the relationship of the spiritual and the anti-spiritual.1 But it would be wrong to assume that those words suggest some kind of aloofness – he knew he had to touch his audience: As much as possible I strive to ensure that every one of my works contains a message to each listener and that my music leaves no one indiferent, but aroused with an emotional response. I even accept that at times my music arouses negative emotions – as long as it is not indiference.2 Born in Moscow on 23 January 1947, Nikolai Sergeyevich Korndorf studied composition at the State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire of Music there, under Sergei Balasanyan; after he was awarded his doctorate in 1973, he went on to study conducting at the Conservatoire under Leo Ginsburg. Thereafter he developed two careers: between 1972 and 1991 he lectured in composition, conducting, musicology and theory at the Conservatory; and, after winning the National All-Union Conductors’ Competition in Moscow in 1976, he guest-conducted throughout the Soviet Union.
