A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The first half of EMV’s 50th anniversary season was a fitting tribute to just how far this organization has come in building the trust of our audience over the years. That we were able to attract big crowds to Henry Purcell’s awe inspiring, but not widely known, "Hail Bright Cecilia", Benjamin Bagby’s epic telling of "Beowulf", and our Festive Cantatas program of music for early winds and voices by Giovanni Gabrieli is testament to what an ongoing commitment to excellence can achieve. When the news came in March 2020 that EMV would have to cancel the rest of our season, as well as put off the announcement of what was to be a hugely ambitious 51st season, our whole team went into overdrive. In a matter of weeks, we had several exciting, innovative, and financially viable artistic projects including A Musical Offering, EMV’s Summer School, Music for the Pause (in collaboration with Early Music Society of the Islands, Victoria Baroque, and Christ Church Cathedral Victoria), and a digital concert hall season featuring over twenty, hour-long programs featuring some of ’s finest performers. Hosted by Bill Richardson, this series is already receiving international attention and has become a national benchmark for what is possible with the new digital tools available to us. The speed and competence with which the EMV Staff and Board were able to pivot so that we could continue working at our mission to engage, enrich, and educate was yet another demonstration of just how special an organization this has become. Despite the negative impact of the pandemic to earned revenue, with the help of our generous supporters, as well as of the Canadian government, EMV has been able to balance the books and keep the organization financially stable while also providing more work to BC artists than ever before. It was hugely comforting to know that despite not having access to many of the international artists with whom we work regularly, that we were still able to create a world class season featuring the gifted artists we have living right here on the West Coast. Though we are not sure what comes next, I can say with total confidence that thanks to our flexible organizational model, excellent financial management, and our ongoing commitment to superlative musical standards, EMV will be, as usual, first out of the gate when we are given the green light to get back to live performances in front of “in person” audiences. I have left EMV for the Victoria Symphony as of September 2020, but EMV will always be special for me. Being a part of the evolution and growth of this organization over the last eight years has been a huge privilege. I am going to miss the imminent sense of possibility and openness to change and experimentation that I feel pervades the culture of the organization and hope that it stays this way forever! EMV’s staff, board, volunteers and audience have all become like family to me and I promise to stay in touch with everyone. All the very best to you all.

5 PACIFIC BAROQUE ORCHESTRA ALEXANDER WEIMANN, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Founded in 1990, the PBO officially became a division of EMV in 2016. It is the only orchestra playing baroque and classical orchestral repertoire on period instruments in the Lower Mainland. With a Juno nomination, seasonal tours around the Pacific Northwest, recent tours to Manitoba and the East Coast as well as a recording for the ATMA Classique label with star soprano Karina Gauvin, the PBO is quickly becoming one of the most active period orchestras in Canada.

The PBO completed a four-concert, East Coast North American tour and recording for ATMA Classique of never-before recorded 18th century Russian Baroque repertoire from St. Petersburg. For this project, 24 musicians of the PBO partnered with one of Canada’s most celebrated vocal soloists: Juno and Grammy award-winning soprano Karina Gauvin. It was the most ambitious single project in the PBO’s history and an unprecedented opportunity for expanding the orchestra’s reputation and credibility on the international stage.

This project introduced the PBO for the first time to three of the East Coast’s most prestigious presenters. An invitation to perform on the Boston Early Music Series was a stamp of approval that will help the orchestra book future engagements all over the United States. The orchestra was both very favorably received by the presenters as well as positively reviewed:

“A full wind section (including even clarinets!), a luxury among early music ensembles, provided welcome richness of character and texture. Flutes rendered laudable and lovely service. The natural horns — notoriously finicky and sometimes gloriously funky elsewhere — stunned in their subdued sobriety, like wild colts reined to dressage discipline. Not to imply that this orchestra is all gentility — they certainly could crank up the Sturm und Drang when warranted." The Boston Musical Intelligencer, October 2019

The opportunity to perform for the first time at the Royal Conservatory’s new hall in Toronto and on Arte Musica’s series in Montreal were also major stepping-stones for the orchestra that provided national exposure for the orchestra. The album, Nuit Blanches, was released in March 2020. CLICK HERE to listen to the album, and CLICK HERE for the album’s single release, Ah, si la liberté by Éléonore Lagacé.

ONLINE PROGRAMMING new directions: MARCH TO SEPTEMBER 2020 Following government directives regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March, EMV did everything it could to continue working towards its mission despite the cancellation of in-person events. All of following online programs were created in a very short time frame and were accessible to everyone through a ‘by donation’ model.

EMV SUMMER SCHOOL

This 8-week course was an exploration of the music of antiquity and the medieval era. Classes were offered online and were led by Christina Hutten, a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at UBC and keyboardist of the PBO. Internationally acclaimed performers who specialize in medieval music made guest appearances to share aspects of their work. Interest in this initiative was overwhelming and we had to cap involvement at 150 people.

MUSIC FOR THE PAUSE

EMV co-sponsored “Music for the Pause”, an online concert series based in Victoria, curated by BC-based violinist and recent graduate of the Juilliard Historical Performance program, Chloe Kim. Co- presenters included Early Music Society of the Islands, Victoria Baroque, and Christ Church Cathedral Victoria. This series ran from July 3 - September 11 and included eleven video recordings of unique programs featuring chamber works on period instruments played by BC-based artists. Photo by Kelsey Goodwin

A MUSICAL OFFERING

EMV asked collaborators to share how they expanded the boundaries of their creativity as they navigated the challenges of the pandemic. Vancouver-based photojournalist Alec Jacobson created 12 portraits of EMV collaborators, showing them practicing their art. Featured artists provided EMV with a written statement, an excerpt of them performing, and a link to something else that they wanted to share. This series was curated by Debi Wong.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

To celebrate EMV’s 50th anniversary and to embark on presenting a whole new repertoire of period performance practices, EMV commissioned Paul McNulty to build a copy of an instrument originally designed by the Viennese builder Conrad Graf in 1819. This is the instrument that the early romantic would have known and for which they were writing.

ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT AND THE MAKER:

During Beethoven’s time (and partly thanks to his influence and his demands on contemporary builders), fortepiano construction underwent a substantial development. One of the most influential builders of the time was Conrad Graf. He created an instrument for Beethoven in the last years of his life, offering a 6½-octave range rather than the 5-octave, designed especially to fulfil the demands for larger instruments by Beethoven and contemporaries.

Paul McNulty is an American living in the Czech Republic and is considered the most experienced living builder of copies of 19th century fortepianos. Since 1985, he has made more than 220 historical pianos. His customers have included Kristian Bezuidenhout, Malcolm Bilson, Nicolas Harnoncourt, The Chopin Institute in Warsaw, The Glyndebourne Festival, The Amsterdam Conservatory, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Royal College of Music and many more.

WHY DO WE NEED THIS INSTRUMENT NOW?

For years, EMV has maintained and made available to the broader community an outstanding historical instrument collection. Though we own a “stable” of keyboard instruments that trace almost the whole basic history of the keyboard from the late Renaissance to the present, we are sadly still missing a vital piece of the puzzle. This early romantic piano is that missing piece. Hearing the music of late Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and others, on the instrument for which it was written is utterly transformative and at the heart of what we value as an organization.

"The Graf possesses all of the advantages of a Romantic era piano; shallower key dip, lighter touch, lightness of frame and variations of color between registers. Playing late Beethoven and the early romantics on this instrument fundamentally transforms the overall texture and contours of the music. What might sound heavy and sentimental on an industrial-era modern piano becomes vocal and ethereal, and instead of labouring the hands, intricate passagework reveals a colourful tapestry, achieved with minimal strain." ‒ Abigail Karr, historical violin performer

The availability of such an instrument in Vancouver will have a significant and long-term impact on the early music scene in Vancouver, and on the musical community in general. Preliminary plans include festive inaugural performances and workshops by world-renowned artists including Kristian Bezuidenhout and Andreas Staier, a Beethoven piano works cycle featuring a number of young Vancouver keyboard players, and a special two-week summer course focusing on piano works and Lieder from Beethoven to Schubert. 8 POTENTIAL OTHER PARTNERS: $50,000 Although EMV will be the sole owner of the instrument, it will be In memory of Ralph Spitzer available to the UBC School of Music for teaching purposes and for performances. SUMMER BAROQUE ACADEMY FOR INSTRUMENTALISTS

In July 2020, now for the second time, the Victoria Conservatory of Music, Victoria Baroque, and EMV worked together to produce a week-long summer intensive training program in period instrument performance led by members of Victoria Baroque and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra. The program welcomes music students, professional musicians and advanced amateurs and offers a generous amount of one-to-one instruction and ensemble coaching. The 2020 program was modified in order to follow Covid-19 safety protocols and requirements. A total of 32 enrolled students, all from BC, aged between 12 and 80. The program was particularly appreciated this year, as opportunities for in-person learning and music making have been very scarce during the pandemic.

EMV INSTRUMENT COLLECTION

Over the years, EMV has assembled a valuable collection of unique historical instruments. This collection is available to the community and benefits many musicians and established cultural institutions that produce concerts and educational programs of repertoire requiring specialized instruments.

OTHER EDUCATION & OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

In addition to our formal education and outreach programs, EMV also hosts open dress rehearsals, pre-concert discussions before all concerts, documentary screenings, and public performance/lectures relating to our repertoire at UBC’s Green College, and St. Anselm’s Church.

EMV also offers discounted tickets to those 35 & younger, student rush tickets, and free admission to all our concerts for youth aged 7-17 who bring a paying adult.

10 emv's strategic plan:

Since 2014, EMV has participated in regular Strategic Planning and annual Business Planning. This process has become a vital part of realizing our organizational aspirations. The 2019/2020 season saw the completion of EMV’s 2017-2020 Strategic Plan. All four strategic priorities were successfully accomplished and have greatly boosted EMV’s effectiveness in delivering its mission. Read below for a summary of achievements. EMV approved its next Strategic Plan in January 2020 for 2020-2023. This next plan aims to increase program diversity, increase and diversify revenue streams, increase our audience, and ensure a sustainable level of growth.

MESSAGE FROM EMV’S BUSINESS MANAGER, NATHAN LORCH

The last nine months have clearly been a difficult time for arts organizations, but EMV, with the support of its donors, supporters, and government partners has managed to remain in a positive and stable financial position while adapting to the new circumstances that required the cancellation of our live concert events.

As the cancellation of live concerts began in March, ticket holders who donated their ticket value rather than request a refund allowed EMV to pay artists a percentage of their performance fees for the cancelled concerts. Concert sponsors who pledged their support of both our cancelled 50th anniversary and 51st season concerts ensure that when possible, we will be able to return to the live concert hall with confidence, knowing that the financial support is there.

The ongoing Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy has allowed EMV to retain all of its administrative staff despite a complete loss of ticket revenue and has allowed EMV to work towards transitioning to an online concert model until live concerts can resume. The continued support of our government funders has enabled us to offer these online concerts free of charge to the community, with additional donor support ensuring that subsequent seasons of online concerts will also be possible.

While the path to a return to live concerts is not yet clear, and the timeline is still uncertain, EMV is committed to remaining financially ready to resume its high quality, live concert presentations, as soon as we are able.

14 emv's endowment fund:

We’re delighted that Early Music Vancouver’s Endowment Fund has grown to over $2 million in capital and is producing $80,000 in annual income, roughly 5% of EMV’s total budget.

In 2004, long-time EMV supporters Vic and Joan Baker together with Dr. Stephen and Betty Drance championed the idea of starting an Endowment Fund to secure the financial stability of the organization for years to come. The remarkable growth in the Fund has been due to the generosity of forward-thinking donors as well as matching grants from the Department of Canadian Heritage.

As EMV grows as an organization, we plan to continue our commitment to strong fiscal stewardship by working to increase our Endowment Fund capital to $4,000,000 by 2030. An Endowment of that size would provide EMV with over $140,000 annually, or roughly 10% of our current annual budget.

15 in memoriam: DR. STEPHEN DRANCE, OC A TRIBUTE FROM MATTHEW WHITE, EMV’S EXECUTIVE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

On September 2, 2020, one of Early Music Vancouver’s most passionate supporters, Dr. Stephen Drance passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Stephen was a champion of both the Arts and Science and an absolutely central figure in Vancouver’s musical life for decades. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and who had the pleasure of working with him. His accomplishments garnered him many awards and recognitions, including the Officer of the Order of Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award. You can read his full obituary in the Globe and Mail HERE.

Stephen was especially fond of Renaissance and Baroque music, and by personally leading major fundraising efforts, he helped to establish Festival Vancouver in 2000. This major festival was a national treasure and always included EMV’s summer festival concerts among its exciting offerings. The inaugural festival featured a meticulous historically informed performance of Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” that received international critical acclaim. After this success, Stephen became committed to making Vancouver a magnet for Baroque Opera, and in partnership with EMV garnered the community support necessary to produce multiple subsequent productions.

It was as a part of one of those subsequent productions that I met my wife, Catherine Webster. We were cast opposite each other in Monteverdi’s “Coronation of Poppea” in 2003 and were married only two years later. While I won’t go so far as to say that Stephen “set us up,” I will say that without his love of music, our lives would have turned out very differently. Stephen and Betty were ever after good friends, and we always enjoyed sharing a meal together when we had the chance. Stephen and Betty were inspirational people for both of us in many ways and we miss them both very much.

A TRIBUTE FROM JOSÉ VERSTAPPEN, EMV’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR EMERITUS

Stephen Drance was a towering figure in the history of EMV, and also in my life; he was also a wonderful friend that I always enjoyed spending time with. My memories go as far back as the late 80s when, on his way to a speaking engagement at an ophthalmological conference in eastern Europe, he joined me for several days at the Utrecht Early Music Festival – where we walked from one stunning medieval church to another and attended several concerts. His favourite performances there focused on renaissance vocal polyphony with groups like The Tallis Scholars and The Gabrieli Consort. This friendship endured later in his life – when we often met for lunches and attended EMV concerts. I was sorry that the current pandemic made an end to most of these get-togethers in the last months of his life.

I had the pleasure of getting to know both Stephen and his wife Betty (who passed away five years ago) very well, especially since the late 90s when Stephen was the moving force of the launch of Festival Vancouver. It was largely thanks to him that we at Early Music Vancouver were given the rare opportunity to present two fully-staged Monteverdi , an opportunity that was really unique in the world of early music. I remember how thrilled he was with the successes, and with the rave review for Orfeo that appeared a few weeks later in the Wall Street Journal.

Those were wonderful years of growth for Early Music Vancouver and other music organizations in Vancouver. Stephen made it possible for us not only to dream, but to see our dreams realized. It was such a joy to continue working with him on our special annual large-scale summer productions at the Chan until my retirement in 2014, a tradition that continued after Matthew White took over. His enthusiasm in helping Early Music Vancouver realize many of the best concerts we ever produced has always been an inspiration; and it has always been wonderful to know that Betty, and the Drance family, were so supportive of all this.

"I will always fondly remember his warm friendship, his boundless optimism in daring to tackle all these amazing projects at EMV, his wit and his wisdom. He will be missed." José Verstappen
