Dramatic foreshadowing is evident in all aspects of the novel – the British and Scottish settings, the quirky sidekicks, the smart and surprising female, the family history of adrenalin-sports and espionage and of course James’ own disregard for rules and relationships. Kev Walker (who has also worked for DC Comics, Marvel and Dark Horse Comics) is a brilliant addition to the team, creating a world for young James Bond that is full of misty Lochs, rolling Scottish hills, polished College halls and underground experimental laboratories shrouded in green light and secrecy.

As an inferno rages around her foes, leathery wings spread from her back and she takes to the air. Long hair whipped by a conjured wind, a half-elf spreads his arms wide and throws his head back. Lifting him momentarily off the ground, a wave of magic surges up in him, through him, and out from him in a mighty blast of lightning. Crouching behind a stalagmite, a halling points a inger at a charging troglodyte. A blast of ire springs from her inger to strike the creature. She ducks back behind the rock formation with a grin, unaware that her wild magic has turned her skin bright blue. Sorcerers carry a magical birthright conferred upon them by an exotic bloodline, some otherworldly inluence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces. One can't study sorcery as one learns a language, any more than one can learn to live a legendary life. No one chooses sorcery; the power chooses the sorcerer. Innate Magic Magic is a part of every sorcerer, suffusing body, mind, and spirit with a latent power that waits to be tapped. Some sorcerers wield magic that springs from an ancient bloodline infused with the magic of dragons. Others carry a raw, uncontrolled magic within them, a chaotic storm that manifests in unexpected ways. The appearance of sorcerous powers is wildly unpredictable. Some draconic bloodlines produce exactly one sorcerer in every generation, but in other lines of descent every individual is a sorcerer.

    Magic : l’Assemblée Treize ans de Multivers Tour d’horizon des éditions et extensions du jeu de Wizards of the Coast avec jalons pour une étude des univers fictifs des jeux de cartes à jouer et à collectionner Pierre Cuvelier mai-juillet 2006 Introduction Le présent document s’intéresse au jeu de cartes à jouer et à collectionner Magic : l’Assemblée, non sous son aspect technique (on n’y trouvera ni règles du jeu, ni conseils stratégiques, amplement développés par l’éditeur, les magazines spécialisés et la communauté des joueurs sur toutes sortes de supports) mais sous son aspect narratif, souvent ignoré ou négligé par ceux qui s’intéressent à Magic, y compris parfois les joueurs eux-mêmes. Magic : l’Assemblée n’est pas seulement un jeu de cartes, c’est aussi un univers de fiction, de fantasy – ou plutôt c’est à la fois un jeu de cartes et un univers de fiction auquel ces cartes servent de support, et cette caractéristique m’a semblé suffisamment originale pour m’y intéresser de plus près. On trouvera donc, dans les pages qui suivent, une description de l’univers posé par le jeu de 1993, puis considérablement enrichi par ses multiples extensions, chacune présentant un nouvel aspect de l’univers et une nouvelle histoire, ou un nouvel épisode d’une intrigue à grande échelle. Les règles et innovations « techniques » de chaque extension ont dû également être abordées, dans la mesure où, comme dans tout jeu mettant en scène un univers fictif, ces règles participaient de la description de l’univers. L’histoire elle-même garde cependant la part la plus importante, complétée par divers commentaires et ébauches d’analyses tentant de cerner l’évolution de la logique narrative qui transparaît sur les cartes des extensions successives, logique qui n’est nullement restée immuable au cours de l’histoire, déjà longue (treize ans), du jeu.
