JNANA SAMNVAYA THROUGH SERVICE TO SOCIETY ACTIVITY JNANA SAMNVAYA THROUGH SERVICE TO SOCIETY ACTIVITY Service to Society is an integral part of Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences curriculum. As per the curriculum every student has to compulsorily undergo one day of “Service to Society” activity during their course work. Report of activities undertaken on 27th October 2018 by various teams in and around Bangalore has been consolidated in this booklet. FPH Teams 1, 2, 3 Chief co-ordinator: Dr. B V Basavaraj Staff co-ordinators: Dr. Manoj Kumar, Dr. Parasuraman P, Ms. Ann Mary, Ms. Hajira Banu, Mr. P Damodar Naik Preamble The quintessence of service to society activity at Kaivara was to heighten the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities in remote areas devoid of proper facilities and awareness. We centered our thoughts on improving the cognitive skills of mentally retarded and cerebral palsied children through active execution and participation in several creative activities. Additionally, the group also planned to visit government schools and colleges to educate and train them on general health issues, communicable diseases, naturopathy and soft skill development. Mass education on women empowerment and gender equality were also conceptualized and executed through proper medium. Objectives of STS To train and entertain MRCP children at Spandana Centre with specially designed activities To inculcate the value of universal brotherhood To create awareness about home remedies and side effects of medication To create awareness on health, women empowerment, de-addiction and education through school and community skits practice To empower rural youth with soft skills for overall success To attract students attention on all the possibilities of extending services in rural setting Planning Previsit to Kaiwara Inauguration Visit to schools to create awareness about health and education Street play to educate the people about socio economic status and health Health camp ( BP, Blood sugar, counselling) Visit to villages Resources required and procurement Charts Posters Stationery materials Offerings (Stationery, toys and objects specially designed for MRCP children) (Students managed to procure and prepare for the event Shuttle Service from Bengaluru to Kaivara Implementation Previsit to Kaiwara The chief co- coordinator of service to society - Dr. B.V. Basavaraj along with the team leaders – Dr.Parasuram, and Mr. Damodar Naik visited Kaivara on 18-10-2018 for seeking the permission from the concerned authorities like the Gram Panchayat, local police, Spandana Centre and Heads of the government schools. The team took up the responsibility for arranging accommodation and food for the students at Kaivara Ashram. This advance visit gave a better clarity to the team co-ordinators for proper planning and implementation of the proposed activities. Why Kaiwara? Kaivara is a small town in the Chickballapur district of Karnataka state, located northeast of Bangalore with the population of 20,000. Kaiwara is a popular place to visit, as it is very close to Bangalore (about 65 km away). Free boarding and well-maintained, low-cost accommodation is available at the ashram. The first program after reaching Kaivara was meeting all the local authorities and village leaders followed by group discussion for better execution of activities Students meditating in the divine environment – Kaivara Main temple Super charging session Social Oath All the group members along with the staff members undertook a social oath followed by national anthem for the rightful execution and success of various preconceived society oriented services without harming the present status of Kaivara with the reaffirmation of the service theme “Be Good and Do Good”. Visit to Govt Primary Kannada Schools Physical health examination of students is followed by school health awareness skit. We included all the students as a part of skit and tried to educate on importance of brushing, nutritional diet, importance of exercise and also created awareness on some communicable diseases like dengue and malaria. In the skit an action song was included which helped to convey brief idea about good habits easily. Students also insisted the importance of education and punctuality through different skits and charts. The session ended with rewarding the students for active participation in the spot answering. Students happily rendered the service by thoroughly enjoying every moment with the villagers. R. Jayaram The team was indeed blessed to spend valuable time with our beloved chairman and chancellor at Kaivara ashram premises. He enlightened the students on the importance and significance of social service and made a strong appeal to the entire gathering to be more humble and responsible citizens. His words of wisdom were very well received with utmost reverence by the students. In fact, they were overwhelmed by the simplicity, generosity and compassionate nature of our beloved chancellor. All of them realized and acknowledged the relevance of this much required concept……. Edutainment, a real stress buster. The humble school teachers extended a warm reception and provided all the facilities for the grand success of the event. Personality development session was carried out for students by the group members creating various real life issues with the ultimate message for overall well-being. Most of the students were found to be exceptional in grasping the concepts and relating it to the reality. The much needed information and resources were shared with them for an assured progress in their academics. Hope, it culminates in the creation a good human being for a healthy and humane society. The group do believe that the seeds of goodness has been planted in the innocent minds for the betterment of the self and society. The groups visited the heritage places in and around Kaivara and felt blessed for spending the day with extreme sense of satisfaction. Students were overwhelmed and expressed interest in planning for such life changing events periodically. Offerings Students donated the clothes and other valuables to the needy souls collected by them from various sources. They handed over all the materials with sheer compassion and love with an iota of ego and selfishness. All got touched by their plight and challenging conditions prevailing in that place. Obstacles faced and strategies adopted to overcome them: The funding was not sufficient with which the teams faced many difficulties and shortcomings. Participation certificates has to be issued to students as it is highly helpful for International programmes Learning Outcomes - The society got benefited by the health checkup, patient counselling and the skits. - Succeeded in creating basic awareness in the rural setting about personal hygiene, waste management, safe usage of medicines, home remedies, women empowerment, significance of discipline and dedication in education, environmental protection, go green concept etc. Overall, pharmacy students seized this glorious chance to be in midst of the rural setting to know the harsh realities of the rural life. The overall experience was very great and memorable to the students. The staff of FDS, RUAS Dr.Indiresha.HN, Dr.Shivakumar.KV, Dr.R.Ranadheer, Dr.Lalitha, Mr.Naveen Kumar.V, played an important role in organising, screening and providing oral health education to school children. The camp gave 2nd year BDS students their first exposure to interact with people about oral health problems and oral health screening.
