Zoological Letters (2018) 4:32 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40851-018-0114-y REVIEW Open Access The phylum Vertebrata: a case for zoological recognition Naoki Irie1,2* , Noriyuki Satoh3 and Shigeru Kuratani4 Abstract The group Vertebrata is currently placed as a subphylum in the phylum Chordata, together with two other subphyla, Cephalochordata (lancelets) and Urochordata (ascidians). The past three decades, have seen extraordinary advances in zoological taxonomy and the time is now ripe for reassessing whether the subphylum position is truly appropriate for vertebrates, particularly in light of recent advances in molecular phylogeny, comparative genomics, and evolutionary developmental biology. Four lines of current research are discussed here. First, molecular phylogeny has demonstrated that Deuterostomia comprises Ambulacraria (Echinodermata and Hemichordata) and Chordata (Cephalochordata, Urochordata, and Vertebrata), each clade being recognized as a mutually comparable phylum. Second, comparative genomic studies show that vertebrates alone have experienced two rounds of whole-genome duplication, which makes the composition of their gene family unique. Third, comparative gene-expression profiling of vertebrate embryos favors an hourglass pattern of development, the most conserved stage of which is recognized as a phylotypic period characterized by the establishment of a body plan definitively associated with a phylum. This mid-embryonic conservation is supported robustly in vertebrates, but only weakly in chordates. Fourth, certain complex patterns of body plan formation (especially of the head, pharynx, and somites) are recognized throughout the vertebrates, but not in any other animal groups. For these reasons, we suggest that it is more appropriate to recognize vertebrates as an independent phylum, not as a subphylum of the phylum Chordata. -

ABSTRACT: The presented paper contains a detailed description of four species of the genus Craniscus DalI, 1871, found in the Upper Oxfordian of Bielawy and Wapienno quarries, Kujawy area. Three of them: Craniscus bipartitus (Munster, 1837), Craniscus antiquior (Jelly, 1843) and Craniscus corallinus (Quenstedt, 1852) have already been described from Poland, the fourth, however - Craniscus tripartitus (Munster, 1840) , had only been known from the Lower Oxfordian of North Bavaria. The Craniscus specimens come from slope deposits of sponge-microbialitic bioherm. This is indicated by the fact that almost all specimens are dorsal valves, separated posthumously from ventral valves. The condition of some specimens and the rock lithology suggests, that the deposition was very violent in some cases and brachiopods were buried alive. The studied material is relatively well-preserved, which alIowes an accurate reading of the location of muscle scal's. Darragh1 1Curator emeritus, Museum Victoria, Carlton, Victoria, Australia Correspondence: Bill Birch, [email protected] ABSTRACT: George Henry Frederick Ulrich (1830–1900) was educated at the Clausthal Mining School in Germany and arrived in Victoria in 1853. After a short period on the goldfields, he was employed on the Mining Commission and then on the Geological Survey of Victoria until its closure in 1868. In 1870 he was appointed Curator and lecturer at the newly established Industrial and Technological Museum of Victoria. In 1878 he was appointed inaugural Director of the Otago School of Mines, New Zealand, a position he held until his death in 1900. His legacy includes detailed original maps of central Victorian goldfields, the foundation of the state’s geological collections, and among the first accounts of Victorian geology published in German periodicals, until now little known. As the only scientist of his times in Victoria with the qualifications and expertise to accurately identify and properly describe minerals, he provided the first comprehensive accounts of Victorian mineralogy, including the identification of the first new mineral in Australia, which he named maldonite. His contribution to mineralogy is recognised by the species ulrichite. Ulrich was universally respected for his scientific achievements and highly regarded for his personal qualities. Of all the German-born scientists who were making their lutheran Church, Zellerfeld, on 15 August 1830 in the mark in mid to late nineteenth century Melbourne, George presence of his grandfather, Johann Friedrich Ulrich, Georg Henry Frederick Ulrich is probably the least well known. -

The earliest known Kinnella, an orthide brachiopod from the Upper Ordovician of Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 52 (3): 535–546. A new species of the orthide brachiopod genus Kinnella is described from the Upper Member of the Georgian Bay Forma− tion (Upper Ordovician) of Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. This species, herein designated as Kinnella laurentiana sp. nov., occurs in strata of Richmondian (mid−Ashgill; Katian) age, most likely correlative with the eastern North Ameri− can Dicellograptus complanatus Zone. This occurrence extends the known stratigraphic range of Kinnella downward considerably from its previously inferred basal Hirnantian inception. The new species is characterized by a moderately convex dorsal valve and an apsacline ventral interarea rarely approaching catacline. This is the third reported occurrence of Kinnella in North America, and is the only species known to have inhabited the epicontinental seas of Laurentia. The associated benthic shelly fauna indicates a depositional environment within fair weather wave base (BA 2). The ancestry of Kinnella and this species appears most likely to lie among older, morphologically similar members of the Draboviidae which were seemingly confined to higher latitude faunal provinces prior to the Hirnantian glacial event. Thus, the mid−Ashgill occurrence of Kinnella laurentiana in the palaeotropically located Manitoulin Island region suggests the mixing of a probable cooler water taxon with the warmer water epicontinental shelly fauna of Laurentia, as well as a pos− sible earlier episode of low−latitude oceanic cooling. -

Precambrian and Paleozoic Geology of the Hudson Highlands
41 PRE-CAMBRIAN AND PALEOZOIC GEOLOGY OF THE HUDSON HIGHLANDS Kurt E. Lowe The City College Trip D Introduction The route of Trip D crosses the Hudson Highlands northwestward (perpen dicular to the structural trend) affording opportunities of studying the petrology, structure and geomorphology of the Pre-Cambrian crystallines. It then turns northeastward to reach the northern gateway of the Hudson gorge at Cornwall-on Hudson by following the belt of early Paleozoic sediments along the northwest border of the Highlands. These sediments and their structural relations to the Highlands crystallines are briefly examined in the field. The return leg of the trip again eros !!Ie s the Highlands (this time oblique to the structure) along the west side of the Hudson gorge to Bear Mt., where it crosses the Ri~er to Peekskill. The reader is referred to Lowe (1949, 1950) from which much of the following information has been extracted. The Hudson Highlands The Highlands are a chain of low, but rugged, mountain ranges extending about 140 miles from Reading, Pa. northeastward through northern New Jersey and southeastern New York into western. Connecticut. They are mostly Pre Cambrian crystallines, representing an ancient orogenic belt of Grenville (? ) sediments which were folded, faulted, metamorphosed and invaded by several igneous phases (Plate 1). The Hudson Highlands, a rather loose geographical term, refers to that portion of the mountain chain which lie s athwart the Hudson River in New York State. Geomorphology Geomorphically the Highlands are known as the Reading Prong of the New England Upland. In view of the long, continued exposure of the Highlands to subaerial erosion (perhaps since early Mesozoic times) present topographic features exhibit the effects of structural and lithologic control to a high degree. -

Abstract The early Silurian reefs of the Attawapiskat Formation in the Hudson Bay Basin preserved the oldest record of major invasion of the coral-stromatoporoid skeletal reefs by brachiopods and other marine shelly benthos, providing an excellent opportunity for studying the early evolution, functional morphology, and community organization of the rich and diverse reef-dwelling brachiopods. Biometric and multivariate analysis demonstrate that the reef-dwelling Pentameroides septentrionalis evolved from the level- bottom-dwelling Pentameroides subrectus to develop a larger and more globular shell.
