He established Jondaryan station on the Darling Downs and was Chairman of the Sherwood Division in 1902. From 1955-1962, this large property of 12.4 hectares was acquired by the Provincial of the Congregation of the Passion in Australasia. It is now used as a retreat centre and home for the Passionist Fathers in Queensland. History In 1865, Henry Coxen purchased 24 acres and 1 rood of riverfront land at Oxley with William Sim for £59 15s. In 1866, Coxen became the sole owner of the land. Coxen added to his property at Oxley in 1870 when he purchased an adjoining 8 acres, and again in 1883 when he purchased another eight acres of riverfront land. Coxen moved with his wife and four children to Oxley in 1880 when he was 57 years old. He probably built this house in the early 1880s, as he was Chairman of the Yeerongpilly Divisional Board (similar to a shire council) in 1887. -

Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history. -

Darragh1 1Curator emeritus, Museum Victoria, Carlton, Victoria, Australia Correspondence: Bill Birch, [email protected] ABSTRACT: George Henry Frederick Ulrich (1830–1900) was educated at the Clausthal Mining School in Germany and arrived in Victoria in 1853. After a short period on the goldfields, he was employed on the Mining Commission and then on the Geological Survey of Victoria until its closure in 1868. In 1870 he was appointed Curator and lecturer at the newly established Industrial and Technological Museum of Victoria. In 1878 he was appointed inaugural Director of the Otago School of Mines, New Zealand, a position he held until his death in 1900. His legacy includes detailed original maps of central Victorian goldfields, the foundation of the state’s geological collections, and among the first accounts of Victorian geology published in German periodicals, until now little known. As the only scientist of his times in Victoria with the qualifications and expertise to accurately identify and properly describe minerals, he provided the first comprehensive accounts of Victorian mineralogy, including the identification of the first new mineral in Australia, which he named maldonite. His contribution to mineralogy is recognised by the species ulrichite. Ulrich was universally respected for his scientific achievements and highly regarded for his personal qualities. Of all the German-born scientists who were making their lutheran Church, Zellerfeld, on 15 August 1830 in the mark in mid to late nineteenth century Melbourne, George presence of his grandfather, Johann Friedrich Ulrich, Georg Henry Frederick Ulrich is probably the least well known. -

NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS VOLUME XV SECOND MEMOIR BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIR OF ROBERT RIDGWAY 1850-1929 BY ALEXANDER WETMORE PRESENTED TO THE ACADEMY AT THE ANNUAL MEETING, 1931 ROBERT RIDGWAY 1850-1929 BY ALEXANDER WETMORE Robert Ridgway, member of the National Academy of Science, for many years Curator of Birds in the United States National Museum, was born at Mount Carmel, Illinois, on July 2, 1850. His death came on March 25, 1929, at his home in Olney, Illinois.1 The ancestry of Robert Ridgway traces back to Richard Ridg- way of Wallingford, Berkshire, England, who with his family came to America in January, 1679, as a member of William Penn's Colony, to locate at Burlington, New Jersey. In a short time he removed to Crewcorne, Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in farming and cattle raising. David Ridgway, father of Robert, was born March 11, 1819, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. During his infancy his family re- moved for a time to Mansfield, Ohio, later, about 1840, settling near Mount Carmel, Illinois, then considered the rising city of the west through its prominence as a shipping center on the Wabash River. Little is known of the maternal ancestry of Robert Ridgway except that his mother's family emigrated from New Jersey to Mansfield, Ohio, where Robert's mother, Henrietta James Reed, was born in 1833, and then removed in 1838 to Calhoun Praifle, Wabash County, Illinois. Here David Ridgway was married on August 30, 1849. Robert Ridgway was the eldest of ten children. -

The majority of the species figured are from the region of the N.E. Himalayas ; but a few forms occurring as far Avest as Almora have been introduced for comparison with the more eastern species which are allied to also them ; some species of which the exact locality is unknown, but which are said to be from North India, have been admitted, since they were probably obtained either from Silhet or Assam. -

Lennon Heritage places in Queensland Heritage Places in Queensland Jane Lennon For millennia people have left their mark on the land - scarred trees, handprints, rock art, shell middens. This urge to leave a sign of passing, of occupation, is strong in most cultures. These often accidental marks are today's heritage, the physical legacy of previous generations. From the historical date of some events and records of what happened on that date in a specific place, we can construct an account of its history. By examining the evidence left at the place as well as this record of history, we can determine its cultural significance to people today; that is, we create its heritage. A timeline of European events of historical significance to Queensland by century is presented in Appendix 1. The exploration of Terra Australis by mariners is the preoccupation of the first two centuries, until John Oxiey's survey in 1823. The convict era commenced in 1824 and ran until 1840, when free settlement brought an extensive if tenuous occupation to the southeast of today's Queensland and wider pastoral exploration began. After 30 years of European settlement, Brisbane was perceived as a 'sleepy hollow' and in 1854 there were complaints of dilapidated government buildings and services, but brick houses were being erected in North Quay and immigrants were establishing a thriving village in Fortitude Valley.^ By 1859 there were about 28,000 Queenslanders of European origin, half located in the country north to Rockhampton and half divided between Brisbane, Ipswich and smaller provincial towns. Following separation from New South Wales, the new colony set about establishing its mark in land surveys, marking out freehold, roads, railways and other utilitarian reserves. -
The Story of HMS Pandora
The Pandora Story Although reasonably successful in her challenging mission— capturing 14 of the 25 Bounty mutineers in Tahiti—HMS Pandora came to grief on the Great Barrier Reef. She was hulled on what’s now known as Pandora Reef, and sank in 30 metres of water, 120 km east of Cape York. Many died—crew and prisoners alike. But there were many more amazing feats of survival and seamanship. In this section, we explore the events surrounding the Pandora’s final voyage … Oswald Brett's impression of the Pandora's last moments afloat. Captain Bligh's remarkable story of survival The Bounty mutineers set Captain William Bligh adrift with 18 men in an eight-metre, two-masted launch. He had been allowed to take some navigational equipment and papers, and enough food to last for five days. The 19 castaways tried to supplement their rations with food from Tofua. All but one escaped with their lives following an attack by hostile Tofuans. Fearing to make another landfall, Bligh decided to head straight for Timor-about 3600 (nautical) miles (about 6480 km) away. "We had no relief with the day save its light. The sea was constantly breaking over us and kept two persons bailing, and we had no choice how to steer for we were obliged to keep before the waves to avoid filling the boat." Dodd Bounty (Bligh's journal entry for 14 May 1789) The cold and wet conditions in the launch were agonising. The exhausted men bailed constantly. What little food they had quickly became wet and almost inedible. -
