California Native Plants These natives provide food and shelter for our native wildlife, including native bees, butterflies, other beneficial insect and hummingbirds. Many annuals and perennials can be started from seed. Try planting seed in the fall to take advantage of our natural rainfall. Including native plants in your garden not only reduces the need for pesticides, but also reduces the need for summer water. If you are planting a native plant in the spring, you must give it regular water the first summer or two to develop a root system that will help it survive. After that, it should do well with little or no supplemental watering. This list is by no means complete but is a good place to start when planning your native garden.
